My heart bled a little at your recent post. I sympathize completely. I think the way Harry has been promoted was/is the last straw for a lot of people. The thing is, is anyone in the music business totally free? Regardless, Harry has to be partly complicit in his promo. While we aren't "entitled" to certain things, there was a lost opportunity here for Harry's promo to help unite the fandom and still keep his closet. Disengagement is sadly inevitable.
Thank you for saying that, though I’m sorry it was painful!
I don’t really like the word complicit. Sure, Harry’s saying things out of his own mouth, and turning up for interviews, but that’s not the same as making his own free choices. Who knows what threats, coercion, or persuasion he’s been subject to? And most of his promo is fine! SNL, Graham Norton, Radio 1(mostly) fine! The problem is mainly the things that aren’t done, like not saying the words ‘One Direction’ to perpetuate the Harry is better than everyone else narrative, and dragging out the old het stuff. I’m certainly not going to blame him for seizing the opportunities he’s been given. It wouldn’t help any of the other boys one bit if he didn’t.
Entitlement. I could write an essay on how much I hate this word, which is usually used to attack other people for wishing things were better. Yes, we’re not entitled to anything from Harry, just as he’s not entitled to us buying his album. The thing is though, it’s nice to acknowledge your fans. It’s polite (and Harry’s very polite). It’s good business. And it’s not difficult – all it needs is a nice tweet or two or a comment in an interview. It’s hardly demanding that he give us his soul, nor would it impinge on his rebrand in any way. It’s deliberate and designed, at least in part, to get rid of his most engaged fans, who are the only people who’ll miss it. I do think it’s a lost opportunity and a real misjudgement. Possibly there’s some other agenda behind it. I find it really odd.
I think you’re probably right that some disengagement is inevitable, unless things change. Harry the distant, yacht vacationing, exclusively A-list, instant icon, simply doesn’t have the emotional pull of the funny, talented, genuinely charismatic, kind, down to earth Harry we know. The thing is though, he’s still there and he’s still fighting – he got the bee! Throughout all of the fuckery we’ve witnessed with all the boys, I’ve always said the same thing. Remember who they really are. We’ve come too far to start believing whatever we’re told.
