niall's dad

1D as Drive Thru Customers I’ve Had

Liam: The guy who brought his pups and rolled the windows down so I could pet them. He was gushing about how much he loves them and he wouldn’t stop smiling and fonding. a 10/10 great experience

Louis: A guy who kept making jokes while ordering, and when told we didn’t have a sandwich anymore he yelled, “ballsack!” Bought food for all of the people in the car, and made sure I brought them enough ketchup. A true Dad™️

Niall: The regular who orders ½ the menu and I know it’s all for him, extremely nice and always slips me a tip so I can “have lunch on him.” He always says yes to an apple pie.

Harry: The college kid who asks for a kale salad and iced coffee, even though we don’t serve either. Super friendly and interested to know how my day is going, holds extended eye contact, always in a good mood?? He’s nicknamed “smiley” by my older coworkers.

Late Nights (Harry Styles)

You smiled softly to yourself as you watched your daughter close her eyes in her crib. It was hard not to watch her as she slept. She was quiet and looked at peace, like all of the things that had happen previously throughout the day didn’t even matter. They slipped away as she slipped into her dream state. And, to you, for some strange reason found that so intriguing. Your baby girl had been a quiet one ever since she was born and it was something both your husband and yourself had learned to truly appreciate it. A non-hassling baby was something of a necessity when it came to your careers.

You reached up to light mounted onto the wall and switched it off with the clasp of your fingers but not before turning on the small moon night light that rested on nightstand. It illuminated the room just enough to the point where she could sleep in content. Harry had gotten it from one of his trips to Italy, mentioning that when he saw it he instantly thought of Everly.

Nodding to yourself and brushing a finger over her cheek you exited the room with silent footsteps and closed the door to a rather large crack.

The overly large abode had now fallen silent. All of the workers were gone and your two German Shepherds were sleeping downstairs in their beds.

You didn’t like it.

Sure having a peaceful and quiet house to come home to after a long day at work was fantastic but their were other reasons behind your distaste. Firstly, the house was so large.

With the positions you and your husband had in your separate industries it made sense to have such a large estate with hallways that went on forever and too many rooms to count, but that didn’t mean you wanted it.

There were times though, when you would step back and look around; It was too much space and the only time it felt full was during the day when everyone was here and awake, bustling about on the French oak wood flooring or the Aurora marble of the kitchen. It made the place feel slightly more alive than its normal ‘soft talking and classical music background’ vibes (Harry was set on only playing it since it was “Important for Everly’s growth and development).

But the second part was that Harry wasn’t here.

He was on a business trip in Greece, meeting with some new possible partners that could only help to expand and endorse his company. He had another two or three days until he would be back in your’s and your daughter’s presence.

It still felt strange though, not physically having him here with you. Maybe it was the postpartum depression you were experiencing since it had only been a few weeks to a month after having little Everly Ryn. Or maybe it was just the fact that you were over protective of your husband and it made you feel 10 times lonelier than you let on. Whatever it was it nearly distracted you from the sound of an incoming Skype call on your laptop downstairs.

Collecting your thoughts you darted down the stairs as silently but as haste as possible. The dogs (Hendrix and Iver) raised their heads at your quick movement, watching as your pink silk gown swiped the rooms. In seconds your eyes focused in on your Mac resting on the kitchen island, screen still open and a loud pinging emitting from it’s speakers.

You carried yourself past the living room and onto the cold floor before standing right in front of the laptop.

Harry’s name popped up the screen waiting patiently for you to finally press the button. A small smile filled your face at the sight of his name. Running a hand through your hair you cleared your throat and pressed the button.

There’s that beautiful face.” Warmth spread over your cheeks.

“Well hello to you too.” You laughed shaking your head at the brunette on the screen. Your eyes raised and you stared at him for a moment, getting a good look at his exterior. His face read as “Drained” seeming a little bit more pale than usual, his green eyes with a grey haze over them and the bags under his eyes were more defined than usual. You furrowed your eyebrows together and went to speak.

“You look tired.” Surprisingly those words didn’t come from your mouth but from Harry’s. His head was turned slightly to the left like he was trying to examine you from a different angel.

“Me?”

“Yeah. Was Evs a hassle?” He asked taking a sip from a coffee cup. You smiled for a second at his nickname for her before quickly shaking your head.

“I mean it took a while for her to finally close her eyes but she’s alright.” You answered truthfully. You didn’t want to give him any reason to worry about anything back here because everything was fine.

“Good..that’s good. Y'know I miss–”

“I was going to say the same thing to you.” Your interjection made him stop mid-sentence his facial expression raising into curiosity once more.

“Say what baby?” He smiled lop-sided, rubbing the sleep out of the corner his eye.

“You look tired Harry. What time is it over there?” Your eyes drifted over to the clock to see it read only 9:25 which was pretty early but he was in Greece.

“Doesn’t matter–”

“Harold.” He flinched at your voice before sighing. You watched through the screen as he stretched from wherever he was sat at to grasp what you assumed what was his phone. He clicked it on and that’s when you heard another sigh.

“4:25.”

“Harry–” You began to drawn on until he stopped you.

“I’m fine Y/N, really. I’ve stayed up much later than this before–”

“Wait you haven’t even gone to sleep yet?” You questioned with wide eyes and furrowed brows. His eyes shut and lips tightened as he probably realized he shouldn’t have mentioned that last part to you. “Babe please get some sleep.” You pleaded. He shook his head and the sound of papers being messily put together sounded between the two of you.

“ ‘ave to finish signing these papers and emailing the other Company. They need certain documents by 12 to help get things up and running so I wanted to get them done now so I didn’t have to worry later–”

“Harry.” His tired moss colored eyes met your pixelated stare, almost looking like a deer caught in headlights. You sucked in a deep breath and took a moment before giving him a soft beam. “I love you.”

It looked like he just melted at your words, his tight shoulders lowering, the worry line in between in his eyebrows disappearing, and his eyes falling and sparking.

“I love you too Y/N.” He grinned. You stayed like that for a while, smiling at each other like you did when you were teenagers. Admiring everything you could physically see at the moment. Harry was still as handsome as you remembered him to be with his pink cheeks and dimples, those eyes you fell head over heals for. Yeah..he was still the Harry you knew and loved.
“Now, tell me how your fashion line is going.” His words interrupted your longing stare but you didn’t mind. You knew he asked because not only did he actually want to know, but because he needed to stay awake.

And yeah those models should be coming in from Spain and Germany next week I believe if Lanny did the scheduling right.” You laughed as you scrolled through the notes on your phone. “This’ll actually be the first time we’ll have any models from Barcelona so I’m pretty excited.”

“ ‘Sounds like it’ll be lots of fun poppet.” Harry chuckled as he signed another document. The both of you had spent this time working, but the chatting seemed to be the best part because it made it feel like neither of you were actually as far away.

“Yeah maybe for my next shoot you could model.” You joked as you texted another employee about details for the sketches on an upcoming fall line.

“With this body? Give me a couple months to get back into shape first, yeah?” You both laughed once more but you shook your head looking up at him.

“Harry you’re only 26,” You giggled, “I think you’ll be fine.”

“ ‘Dunno babe, sitting at a desk 24/7 doesn’t have many health benefits.” He smirked reading another paper.

Just before you were going to turn back to your phone you noticed the brightness starting to illuminate the backboard of Harry’s bed. Glancing at your clock you realized that it was 10:30, which means not only had you talked for two hours, but it was 6 o'clock by Harry.

“Hey….babe?”

“Yes darling?”

“The sun is coming up.” His head shot up, making dead eye contact with you. You pointed behind him with a snicker and watched as he did double take to the window.

“Holy crap.” Both of you broke up in laughter at his shock and slowly he turned back to grin at you.

“Are you going to go to sleep now?” You ask teasingly. He sighs and shakes his head in a heap of chuckles.

“I’ll get a couple hours for your sake.” You cheered silently, extremely happy he finally listened to you. He began to collect the papers surrounding him and piling them into a manila folder. He mumbled a couple things to himself when he glanced over certain papers, separating them from others into a black folder. You watched him from the corner of your eye as you cleaned up your plate of leftovers, placing the dishes in the sink and the containers in the fridge.

You returned to the screen somehow at the same time, both looking equally as tired as the other you assumed. It had been a long day for the both of you.

“Alright, you promise you’re going to sleep?” You inquired with one raised eyebrow. He gave out another soft chuckle but nodded.

“Yes Y/N.” He spoke mocking. You rolled your eyes but flashed his another tired grin.
“Okay…I love you.” You words were quiet but they were too meaningful for him not to hear.

“I love you more baby.” His voice sounded overly sincere. A pang hit your chest..hard. “Tell Evs I love her and that I miss her. Oh give her a kiss for me too.” He beamed.

“I will.” You simpered. He glanced at you once more with a sad “I love you so much I don’t want to hang up” look but you knew it was too late to carry on this conversation.

“I’ll see you soon Y/N.” You nodded to yourself eyes resting on your lap. You hated goodbyes so much, they were awful and gut-wrenching, made your insides twist to the point in which you felt dizzy. It was worse though..having to say goodbye to Harry.

“Hey.” You glanced at him the same smile resonating between his cheeks, “I love you.” A long pause.

“I love you too.”

“Goodnight babe.”

“Goodnight Harry.” With that you hung up and closed your laptop. Your heart felt heavy but you took in a deep breath. Everything was going to be fine, of course, you just needed to relax.

Climbing up the long staircase you took more breaths to yourself. Yes the house felt emptier than usual but you had to remind yourself that Everly was still here to comfort and love. And it would only be a day or so until Harry would be back. Besides it wasn’t like he hadn’t spent longer business trips away from you. During your first year together he once left for a whole month to stay in Japan and that was a test against your relationship.

Luckily this time he had only been gone for two weeks.

You pushed the double doors to your master bedroom open and let out a yawn before stretching your arms above your head. Stripping from the robe and hitting the lights you cross the room to your bed. Pulling the blankets back you crawled beneath the silk sheets and onto the pillows.

Just as you were about to fall asleep a buzzing noise broke you out of the trance. Groaning and reaching to your side you grasp your phone off the bedside table. It was a message.

From Harry.

Stop worrying so hard and go to sleep. I love you ❤️” An overwhelmingly large smile filled your face and you hastily responded to the message.

I love you too. Goodnight 💜

Look! It’s more about Dad!Niall and little Maeve! I saw a prompt on my prompt list that sparked the inspiration for this and it’s a little short, but I’m just really excited to be writing again and I really hope you all like it!

The hospital room was relatively calm.

You’d gotten less than four hours of blissful, quiet sleep in the calm room, the only noise coming from the heart monitor that you were required to wear and the whirring of the machines. Early in the evening, the room was chaotic. You were sitting up in the hospital bed with your knees pulled up to your chest and Niall by your side, chanting and cheering you on. He held one of your legs back and he coached you as you pushed, doing everything in your power to bring your baby into the world before midnight. And then the room was filled with tears and cheers, your little one measured and weighed and wrapped up in a soft white blanket before being passed onto you and Niall. You’d spent a good few moments with her resting on your chest after she was born, your nightie ruined and your cheeks wet with tears of joy and pride. She was absolutely beautiful.

“Niall.” You whispered and at first you didn’t think he heard you, so you slowly wiggled your body closer to him. You nudged your feet between his knees and when you felt his body jerk you knew he was awake. He threw the covers off his body making them land on you as he sat up and rubbed his eyes a bit before turning and looking at you. You couldn’t help but give him a smile as he looked at you with droopy eyes.

“Ya need somethin love?” His voice was horse due to just waking up, he ran his hands through his hair as he let out a yawn as he looked at the clock on the nightstand. “Bloody hell its half past four in da mornin.” You just rolled your eyes as you got up out of bed and walked over to him.

“We could really go for some cookies and peanut butter.” You placed your hands on his cheeks and gave them a squeeze. “We are starving.” He just let out a light laugh as you took your hand away from his face. He placed his hands on your growing tummy and slowly started rubbing circles.

“My girls are hungry?” You just nodded and smiled as he stopped rubbing circles on your belly and reached around you to grab his keys off his nightstand. “Let’s get on da road then, don’t wanna get stuck in da 5am rush hour.” You just laughed as you turned around and headed to the closet to slip on some comfy pants and your shoes.

Soon you and Niall were parked outside the closest grocery store to your house. He was still half asleep but you were wide awake and on the prowl for anything that would satisfy your craving. You were out of the car and headed into the store before Niall could even unbuckle himself.

“Slow down love, the store isn’t goin anywhere.” You just rolled your eyes as you stopped and waiting for Niall to catch up to you. He grabbed your hand before the two of you ventured off into the store looking for the certain items you were craving at the moment.

“Hmm do I want double stuffed or just regular Oreos?” You tapped your index finger on your chin as you took in your options. “Oh! Niall they have Oreo thins!” You grabbed the box of cookies before you turned around and when you saw Niall leaning on the basket with his eyes half closed you couldn’t help but smile. You slipped the box of cookies into the cart and slid out your phone so you could capture the moment.

“Oi! I’m up!” He shot up and looked around as the sound of the camera went off. You just laughed and leaned over the basket and placed a kiss to his cheek. “What did ya pick lovey?” He looked down into the cart and shook his head when he saw the two jars of peanut butter, one smooth and one crunchy and two boxes of Oreo thins.

“Just some late night snacks.” You answered as you continued down the aisle making sure there wasn’t anything else you and the growing baby in your tummy wanted. “Oh babe! They have beef jerky!” You immediately took off towards the stand holding the bags of beef jerky and your mouth instantly started to water as you looked at all the flavors.

“Love, do ya think all this is gonna be good t'gether?” You heard the wheels of the cart coming up behind you and soon you felt his chin resting on your shoulder. He turned his head and gave your neck a quick kiss as one of his hands came and squeezed your hip.

“We want it,” you grabbed the original flavored jerky and before he could say anything you opened the package and took out a piece giving it a smell before popping it into your mouth. “Oh my god.” It came out more like a moan causing Niall’s eyes to go a bit wide as he looked around making sure no one was paying attention to the two of you.

“Uhm lovey ya tink we could get a move on now?” He asked as you slowly started making your way towards the front of the store. You just nodded as you placed another piece of jerky in your mouth causing Niall to lightly laugh and shake his head.

“Thank you babe, we love you.” Was all you said to him as you walked further ahead of him towards a check out lane. He just watched you walk ahead of him and couldn’t help but smile as he noticed your walk was turning more into a slight waddle due to the belly that was continuously growing. He couldn’t help but imagine how soon there would be an infant carrier in the basket and grocery shopping would be an event instead of just a quick pop in and out trip.

He also knew this was only the beginning of the craving stage of your pregnancy, he didn’t mind the midnight snack runs or in this case the early morning snack runs. Just like he didn’t mind when you would steal his shirts because that’s the only thing fitting you at the moment, he didn’t mind holding your hair as you got sick due to something you ate not agreeing with the baby growing inside you. He would do anything for you if you told him it would make you and the baby happy, the little girl inside your tummy already had him wrapped around her finger and he was totally okay with it.

In our hearts.

Lol I’m addicted to dad Harry…

Anyway, enjoy!!! :)

“Daddy, why don’t I have a mommy? Where is she?” The melody merging into the hot air of the garden, created by the brush of Harry’s fingertips against the chords of his old guitar, halted when he heard those words. He knew at some point that question was going to pop in in any of their conversations, but he had never expected it to come up in such a sudden way.

He didn’t realise how long he had been making her wait until she left her toys on the floor and walked to curl up in his lap, calling his attention “Where is she, Daddy?” He looked down to her, meeting her innocent and vivid gaze, and detecting her inherited features from you in them “What made you ask that baby girl?” She shrugged before answering “Lately I’ve noticed all my friends have a mommy and a daddy… well, not all of them, Emma has two daddies and Kevin to mommies; but I only have you. Why don’t I have a mommy?”

He ignored the speech he had prepared for that question and, looking at the horizon where the sun made its final appearance of the day, he answered in the most honest of the ways “Princess, sometimes the brightening of a miracle means the fade of another one” He could feel a lump settling at the back of his throat, as he repeated the sentence he once told himself the saddest as well as happiest day of his life three years ago.

All the landscape at his sight disappeared and was replaced by the image of a dim waiting room where his figure walked nervously from side to side, waiting impatiently for good news. The next thing he visualised was the sorry countenance of the doctor leading him to the delivery room, finding his baby daughter being held by the wrong person. She was supposed to be in your arms, not the ones of the nurse. He was supposed to see the beautiful image of the two loves of his life, one smiling wide as she tried to calm the other little one, not what he saw.

The feeling of the lump grew inevitably wider and he realised he had to stop recalling that day if he didn’t want his daughter to see him crying. “What does that mean Daddy?” She sat up and stroked his cheek with her small hand “That means she’s somewhere out there looking after us.” He got lost in the darkness of the sky. “You see that shiny star? The one that stands out between the rest?” He pointed at it while leaning to be at her level. He saw as her chocolate eyes located its spot and a grin made its home at her face “Yeah, it’s very beautiful. I like it very much” “That’s where Mommy is. Sure she’s right now looking at you and the precious angel you’re growing into.” Her mouth made an “o” shape, she couldn’t get her eyes out of the shiny spot. “Will Mommy ever come to visit us?” “No my love, but she’ll always be with us, even if we don’t see her.” He wanted to check if she had understood what that meant, that’s why he asked “Do you know where she’ll be?”

“Yeah, Mommy will always be in our hearts.”

Niall-- Dancing in the Moonlight

“I’ve got it handled, don’t I Doodle Bug?” Niall said, tickling at his little girl who squealed and ran off, a giant grin on her face.  He turned back to his wife, love and adoration naturally slipping into place as he looked at his best friend.  “Go have your girl’s night, love.  You deserve it.”

And as far as Niall was concerned, she really and truly did. He had been doing promo and then touring for months which left his loving and strong wife to take care of their house and child by herself, all while still working and following her own dreams. She never once complained about all of the weight on her due to the rigors of Niall’s career, but he knew she needed a break and that she wouldn’t take one if he didn’t push her to.

It had been Niall’s suggestion that she take a day to spend with her friends and sisters.  It had been four months since she had done anything just for herself, not with their daughter or Niall in mind, and he was determined she would relax.  He had let her sister and best friend plan out a day full of spa treatments, nail appointments, a few nice meals, a movie, and shopping at her favorite mall, all funded by his credit card.

She was grateful for his thoughtfulness, but she couldn’t help but be uneasy.  “Are you sure you’ve got everything under control?  She’s going through a bit of a phase and you’ve only been home a couple of days…”

“Hey,” Niall whispered, cupping her chin in his hand.  “I love you, but you’re overthinking things.  I’m her dad, remember?  We all win today.  You get to rest, she gets to hang out with her daddy, and I get to spend time with my little princess.  Don’t worry about us, go enjoy yourself.”  Lots of kisses for Niall and their daughter ensued, but he could see how grateful she looked as she slipped into the front seat of her best friend’s car.  It was hard for her to turn off the full time mom part of her brain, even while she was at work, but that made it all the more important for her to get away.

Niall locked the front door and turned around to see his three year old daughter looking at him curiously.  “Daddy, where did Mommy go?” she asked, her thumb slipping into her mouth.

Niall-- Loss For Words

“Sounds like utter shit to me.”

My eyes narrowed at him from my end of the couch, my legs stretched out in between us as he rubbed at my feet.  “Watch your language, Horan,” I warned.  “We agreed that we both needed to stop swearing now before the baby was born so we wouldn’t have to adjust once she’s already talking and repeating everything we say.”

Niall rolled his eyes.  “Wouldn’t want her swearing straight out of the womb, would we?”  His tone was sarcastic.

I shifted, my hand rubbing over my swollen belly.  I was 24 weeks pregnant with our first baby, we had just found out she was a girl a few weeks ago, after several weeks of keeping her legs crossed so we couldn’t see.  “That’s not what I said, and you know it, Niall.  I just said that you should start talking to her; tell her stories or talk about your day.”

There was a short snort from the other end of the couch.  “You don’t actually think she can hear me through all of that?” he asked, nodded at my stomach.

My lips thinned as I just looked at him.  “Thanks, sweetie.  You know how to make a girl feel great about herself.”

He groaned, rubbing at his eyes.  “You know what I mean, pet.  She’s inside of you, she can’t hear much of anything even if her ears are working.”

“You do remember I have a degree in child development psychology, right?” I questioned and he grunted; his typical response this pregnancy when I reminded him I had become familiar with this process and how children developed from conception a long time before we even considered having a child.  “I promise you, she can hear us talking right now.  If not exactly at this moment, she will very, very soon.”

“Yeah, and how did you know that?”

“There have been studies done that show that babies can not only hear what is going on outside the womb, even if it is muted, but they also recognize the voices of the people they hear the most often,” I explained patiently.

Niall had just grunted and gone back to his TV show and that was the end of that until a few days later while we were making dinner.  Out of nowhere, he turned to me and asked, “These studies… How do they know the baby can hear ya?”

Concept: What do you mean your name isn’t Dad?

Lunch time was approaching and you had your hands full. You had a five year old yacking away in your ear about absolutely nothing, a screaming newborn making a fuss in the swing, a nine year old and seven year old going toe to toe on where to sit at the table, an eleven year old tuned out to the world with her eyes glued to her phone, not being any help, and a husband who had vanished from the chaos.

You took pride in Niall being your husband. He was a generous and affectionate partner, a kind and compassionate father to your four daughter and one son. He was how every father should be with their children; Patient and funny, loving and adventurous, relaxed and entertaining. He almost never missed a second of anything, including the tea parties and the dress up and playing with dolls, bandaging the scraped knees and kissing the bruises and soothing the fevers. Your friends complained about their husbands being useless, lazy, and turning a tad bit mean. It brought you just a bit of pleasure to rub it in their faces of how great Niall was in every area.

You snapped your fingers at the arguing children, telling them to get in their seats and stop the bickering. You instructed the toddler to do the same, raising your eyebrow as a warning when she stomped her foot because she wanted to be as attached to you as possible and have your undivided attention. You stuck a pacifier in the baby’s mouth, only for it to be spat back out.

Just as Jesus told the waves to be still, Niall walked into the room and all the commotion seized. Juliet and Hannah stuck their lips back in, Katie’s incoming tears stopped, Vivian had her phone face down on the table, and Eddie’s reddened face turned to its natural rosy complexion. He cooed happily at the sight of his old man. The silence was louder than the actual chaos. Niall scanned the kitchen incredulously, wondering why all had fallen all of a sudden. You tried not to huff. Niall was everyone’s favorite, your kids were eager to please him, but they always cut up a notch when he wasn’t around.

Niall offered a hand and you graciously took it. You sat at the table with the kids, Eddie cradled in your arms as you fed him and directed your husband from all the way across the kitchen on how to cut the sandwiches, explaining that only one shouldn’t have crust on it. Hannah hated crust, she even hated the word crust. You didn’t get it, it was all just bread. Niall snickered, claiming he knew what to do.

Plates of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches sided with potato chips were passed around the table. They all dove in as soon as their plates were set in front of them.

“Slow down, can’t have you all choking at once.” You heard Niall joke.

You didn’t look up to know the girls were stuffing their faces. Your eyes were settled on the infant in your arms. Eddie looked up at you with crystal blue eyes, as clear as his fathers. He looked the most like Niall out of the five.

From outside of the house, you could hear a vehicle. It was almost hard to miss, the sound of the breaks squealing all through the neighborhood, along with the sound of your neighbors mailboxes being slammed shut. It was that time of the day when the mailman, or woman, did their rounds. Katie jumped in her seat. She loved the mailman, or mail woman. She often told you that’s what she wanted to be when she grew up. Retrieving the mail from the mailbox was actually listed as a household chore. Katie lived and breathed for whenever it was her turn to go out and get the mail from the mailbox.

“Mail’s here!” She jumped up from her seat, abandoning her food, and sprinted to the front door. It was useless for you to tell her to stop and get back in her seat because she passed you in a millisecond.

Unfortunately for Katie, Niall was a lot faster. He caught her from under her arms and carried her back, plopping back into her seat and scooting her close to the table as if she weighted nothing.

“Not today, Missy Ma’am.” Niall said as he did so. “Sit and eat.”

Katie put on a subtle frown and went back to eating her food. Juliet quickly swallowed her food to speak.

“Daddy, can I go get it this time?” She asked.

She almost never got the mail, the job almost never went to anyone else except Katie. Juliet’s main chore was to put toys away, including her sisters and now her little brothers. Though Eddie was just born a few weeks ago, he didn’t have as many toys as she did. For Eddie, Juliet dragged his swing out of the way and made sure it was turned off to save the battery.

“Next time, my Jewel. Eat your lunch. You can do it tomorrow.” Niall promised her.

“Da, there’s no mail on Sundays!” Hannah reminded him. Niall gently slapped his forehead.

“Right you are. On Monday, then.” Niall nodded and winked.

He quickly put on his slippers and stepped out to get the mail from the box. In less than a minute, he returned with white envelopes in hand. Niall sorted through them as he locked up and kicked her slippers off. Most of them were bills addressed to Niall, and a magazine for you. Niall set it gently in front of you, his mail next to yours.

The kitchen was peaceful as everyone ate, Eddie drifting off to sleep and you mindlessly looking at the pictures in the magazine. Vivian was on her phone, as per usual, barely speaking a word but her food was gone. Niall took her plate and washed it. You lightly frowned and complained how there was nothing interesting in your subscribed magazine anymore and reminded yourself to cancel your subscription. Hannah wanted to know if she could read it, and then Juliet asked if she could when Hannah was done. You gave the magazine up, Juliet sitting oddly in her seat to look at the same pages Hannah was looking through.

There wasn’t much conversation, everyone occupied in their own little world. You snuggled Eddie just a little bit longer, rubbing the top of his head and feeling his fine hair against your fingertips. Niall was looking out the kitchen window, examining the backyard. He’d have to cut the grass soon.

Katie’s eyes absentmindedly looked down at the envelopes that were rested next to her. She knew her address by heart. You and Niall stressed how important it was for her to know where she lived, also her parents phone numbers. Her teacher taught a lesson about it in school, associated with how to properly write and address a letter. Katie recognized the numbers, the street name, and the postal code instantly. Then she was stumped. There was a name on the front that she did not know, a first and last name. The last name she also knew because it was hers. Was she missing something?

There was mommy and daddy, Vivian, Hannah, Juliet, and Eddie, and herself, running through everyone in the household. She sat to herself for a moment, swimming in a pool of confusion. Katie was dying of curiosity.

“Who’s Ni-ale?” She asked out loud.

If it wasn’t for the sleeping baby in your arms, you would have burst out into laughter. This was funny for two reasons. The first reason because Niall having his name mispronounced, whether on accident or on purpose, was his number one pet peeve. If it was an accident, Niall would give an awkward chuckle and and correct the mistake. If it was done on purpose, he would huff loudly and ignore it, sometimes shoot a sarcastic remark back or something just as annoying. You particularly loved to get under Niall’s skin that way. Neal, Noel, Nail, Napoleon, Nickle you’ve called him everything except Niall. It drove him absolutely nuts.

The second reason why you found this absolutely hilarious because of the shock factor when kids find out that their parents have their own names besides mom and dad. You and Niall have already been through this when Vivian was much younger. She cried all day, claiming she felt lied to. As of right now, she was sucked into the world of Twitter, Tumblr, Snapchat, whatever the hell she was so occupied with.

Since Vivian, you’ve obviously have had three other children, and they were all about to get an earth shattering reality check.

“Who?” You asked, pretending not to understand what Katie was saying.

“Who is Nay-all?” Katie read, to the best of her ability, straight off the envelope. You pressed your lips together trying not to laugh.

Niall’s head had turned from daydreaming out of the window to look at you, giving you a discrete stink eye as you silently died of laughter.

“I believe that says Niall.” He corrected. It was very hard to get mad at his daughter, one of the brightest stars in his life. Niall was generally slow to anger, and if he learned one thing from having five children and a four of them being daughters, it was how to be patient.

“Who’s that?” Suddenly Hannah and Juliet were engaged in conversation. Their heads turned to Niall for an explanation.

“That’s me, that’s my name.”

Juliet looked to Hannah, as if she was silently asking “Did you know this?” Hannah looked back at her, widening her eyes and signaling “No, I didn’t.” Katie blinked, looking down at the envelope and back at her dad.

“No it’s not.” She said practically. You accidentally let a giggle slip, admiring the scene unfolding in front of you.

“Yes it is, darlin’. That’s my real name.” Niall confirmed, hiding a smile.

It was obvious that this was a serious moment to them, but Niall couldn’t help but smile at his girls when they were learning something new, or in general. Smiling in their faces and laughing at them would be considered rude to him.

“Who calls you that?” Juliet wanted to know. She sure didn’t call him that. Everyone always called him Da, Dad, or Daddy.

“Ev’rybody does.” Niall shrugged. “Even mom does.”

“Why?” Hannah questioned.

“Because that’s my real name.” Niall said.

“Has your name always been Neal?” Katie carefully asked, still coming to grips with this new information.

“For as long as I can remember, and it’s Niall. Not Neal.”

“Naile.”

“No, Niall.”

“Ni-ale.”

Ni-all.

You sat back and watched the three gang up on their dad, pondering with questions about his identity. You called him Niall in front of the girls, all the time you thought, but probably not enough for them to pick up on. You mostly used dad or daddy. There was no way you could keep holding Eddie in your arms without waking him up from your stifling giggles. You sat him in the swing.

“Who gave you that name?” Hannah asked.

“My parents did, as we gave you your names.” Niall mentioned, a good example. They understood that.

“Why don’t we call you Niall?” Juliet pondered.

“Because children shouldn’t call their parents by their first name.” He explained.

“Why?”

“I don’t know, they just shouldn’t.” Niall shrugged.

“Can we call you Niall now?” Katie was sitting on her knees, hoping that she could.

“No, don’t do that.”

“Why?”

“Because you shouldn’t.”

“Why?”

“I’m not gonna play the Why Game with you lot.” Niall chuckled. Katie laughed, she had your laugh. It was a beautiful sound, his children laughing was music to Niall’s ears, but not quite as breathtaking as the laughs theirs originated from.

You sat in your seat, taking in the debate between a three kids and a man going on forty. It made your heart swell with love and affection for everyone in the room, seeing how fascinated the girls were with Niall and seeing how gentle and patient he was with them, even when he was outnumbered and faced with one of his ticks.

“I already knew that.” Vivian finally chimed in.

“Ah, she speaks!” You teased.

“I know mommy’s name too.” She mentioned. The trio turned, the spotlight now on you.

Vivian was the one who wanted to prove herself, to prove what she already knew and learned and what she could do. She never missed a moment where she could give her two cents on something.

“Let’s see if you guys can guess it.” You offered. Now it was Niall’s turn to watch a lifechanging scene unfold.

You motioned for the magazine that was still open and sitting in front of Hannah. She passed it to you. You flipped to the cover and slid it in front of Katie, pointed to where it was addressed to you. Katie looked over the words, pronouncing slowly as she did so. Finally, she got it, and she got it right.

“You’re absolutely right. Got it on the first try!” You praised her, patting her on the top of her head.

“That’s a pretty name, I like it.” Juliet complimented. You humbly thanked her.

“See, I knew that. I also know your middle names, and mommy’s maiden name as well. You told me once, and I remembered.” Vivian slightly bragged.

“Let’s not get carried away with the names.” Niall jumped in.

Niall rounded the table to adjust Katie in her seat, who had shifted to sitting on her knees and practically climbed onto the table, probably too excited to sit still. She ate neatly, her sitting habits were a mess. He tapped her shoulders, reminding her to sit on her bottom like an actual human being. Niall scooted her closer to the table again and adjusted her plate, with a sandwich that had one bite in it and all of her potato chips gone, in front of her.

“Okie dokie, Niall.” She snickered. Niall tsked.

“Very funny. Eat your food.”
