5. Sleepwalk With Me (2012), dir. Mike Birbiglia
★★★

This was all kinds of delightful. The central character describes love as a “mountain of pizza-flavored ice cream and delusion,” which is one of the better definitions I’ve heard lately. Teetered on the whole “douchey white guy with whom you should empathize despite his being a douche” thing that’s kind of annoying, but lovable all the same.

4. Silver Linings Playbook (2012), dir. David O. Russell
★★★

This was an entertaining, if predictable, romantic comedy. No one in the movie really did a correct Philadelphia accent, but I suppose that’s not important. Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Jacki Weaver are all terrific. I’m not sure that I understand the awards hype, but it was super cute.

6. Daydream Nation (2010), dir. Mike Goldbach
★★

I admire a lot about this movie. It attacks a lot of different genres at once: dark comedy, drama, horror, fantasy. The director appears to be going for some kind of Lynch vibe, which he kind of achieves. The screenplay is meandering, though, with a few subplots that either don’t go anywhere or don’t seem to edify the finished product in any way. Kat Dennings is engaging.
