newyork islanders

Family compound on Honeymoon Island near Saranac Lake, New York.

Writes contributor Mary Newman:

My grandfather Verdo Newman bought this island in the 1930’s, and it has remained in my family ever since. It is located on the waterway connecting Lake Flower with Kiwassa Lake, and Lower Saranac Lake. It holds a main cabin, boathouse, and lean-to on the back side of the island. The lean-to was the first structure built, and it is also where my grandfather and his worker’s would sleep while they built the main cabin. My father spent the past ten year’s building the boathouse in the front, offering his own hard work to my family’s favorite place to escape the real world.
