My New Music Pick Of The Week! - (05.30.12)

“Now Or Never” by Outasight

Okay, so I friggin adore this little video. The song itself first grabbed my attention with its deliverance of upbeat positivity and inspiration…but when i saw this video? It was all over. How brilliant was it to make a bucket list video to represent the song with a corresponding lyrical message? No Outasight singing with scantily clad, club going hoochie mamas here.  Tight rope walking over massive ravines?  Check. Senior citizens sky diving? Yup, got it.  Little guy’s first dive into a swimming pool?  Check.  All those “just do it” moments that make life so unbelievably remarkable in one video - it’s just the perfect daily dose of inspiration needed to get through the seemingly endless stories of crime, poverty, death, greed and suffering.  Bravo, Mr. Outasight…BRAVO!

SIDE NOTE: I really don’t love the fact that the YouTube still that the Now Or Never video shows while the video is not in play is a pic of the Lakers celebrating a championship in the locker room.  Really?  Grumble, grumble.  It shows you just how much i like this song/video if i STILL recommend it after this Laker nonsense…

“Brokenhearted” by Karmin

This husband and wife duo from Nebraska that became a YouTube sensation last year, finally have released a formal single.  Fresh off their performance on Saturday Night Live, Karmin are poised to make a huge dent in the music scene with the catchy debut single, “Brokenhearted” Simply put, this single is pure pop bliss.  If Amy’s vocal stylings sound familiar, it might be due to the fact that she’s a dead ringer for Ke$ha - only happy, fun and much less skanky. They’re quirky. They’re fun. But most importantly, they’re talented.  I promise you that “Brokenhearted” will grace US radio stations very soon (on multiple formats) and hopefully their first full length cd will be just as good as their lead single.  Fingers crossed.

One more thing…

Come On. That’s Right. Uh, Cheerio.

City Of Angels by 30 Seconds To Mars

Wow. The videos that Jared Leto and gang are putting out from their latest cd, have been nothing short of brilliant. This latest video features candid moments from celebrities and wanna be celebrities that have experienced both sides of the reality that is…LOS ANGELES.

Take it from someone who spent over a decade and a half there, it is indeed a double-edged sword. I look back and both love and hate the time that i spent there. I can’t explain it much more than that, but it’s what makes the “City Of Angels” so undeniably unique.

As If This Song Could Get Any Better…

Mumford & Sons goes and creates a video for their second single off of the epic cd, Babel that is SO AMAZING i can’t even stand it. I was pleasantly surprised when the band selected Lover Of The Light as their second single rather than the title track from Babel (which seemed a foregone conclusion).  But to watch this video and its interpretation of the glorious lyrics of Lover was truly inspiring and introspective all at the same time. This is another cherry on top of a cake that seems to be adding cherries by the minute! Enjoy!

“It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons

Nevada rockers Imagine Dragons have slowly but steadily fastened themselves onto the US alt-rock scene with their anthemic debut single, “It’s Time.” Thanks to the continued exposure from indie music radio stations (such as KCRW in Los Angeles), the Las Vegas band has seen a swell of fan support which should lead to a full fledged album contract here soon. Check out “It’s Time” and let me know what you think!

“Dark Side” by Kelly Clarkson

In her now decade long career, the original American Idol has given us hit after hit after hit.  However, in “Dark Side” she has given us her best work to date and my favorite Kelly Clarkson song…EVER.  Not only is her latest single catchy and ripe for spins at radio stations across America, but it’s honest, humble, fearful and endearing.  Let’s face it, we all have our baggage.  "Dark Side" admits this fact and says…

Can you love mine? Can you love me, even with my dark side?

The trick here is how to tackle such a “downer” of a topic - and keep the song light, fresh and dare i say toe tappin.  But Ms. Clarkson does just that.  This is the perfect follow-up to the empowering “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”.  It’s truly a pleasure to be witnessing the artistic evolution of our original American Idol.

My New Music Pick Of The Week! (2.28.12)

“Titanium” by David Guetta featuring Sia

Here in the US, ADELE just made history by having two albums in the Top 5 of the Albums Chart while also having two songs in the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart as well.  Interestingly though, only a few weeks ago, another female singer owned two Top 5 singles on the British Singles Chart.  That lady was NOT ADELE, but a singer who has enjoyed modest success in the US - Sia.  You may not recognize her name, but if you were a fan of the HBO series, Six Feet Under, you will never forget her series ending song, “Breathe Me” (arguably the greatest ending to ANY television series).  She collaborated with the Dance Master himself, David Guetta on the wonderful single, “Titanium” which recently hit #1 in the UK.  That same week, she and Flo Rida also held a position in the Top 5 with yet another infectious club anthem that’s gaining airplay here in the States “Wild One”.

Even though neither of these singles are technically her songs, her Tori Amos like sound is picking up a new audience which hopefully will keep Sia at the forefront of the music scene for years to come.

My New Music Pick Of The Week!

“Drunk” by Ed Sheeran

In keeping with the Ed Sheeran theme that’s goin around, My New Music Pick Of The Week is another song by the British crooner who was just recently featured on last week’s episode of Cougar Town.  This guy is so talented, both in his song writing abilities and live performances - and my gut is telling me that unfortunately, he’s never going to achieve “Adele-like” status here in the States.  Although, to be frank, i never thought ADELE would achieve “Adele-like” status here in the States either.  Happily, i’ve been proven wrong with Adele, and can only hope i’m proven wrong again with Ed Sheeran. But in order for that to happen, Atlantic Records needs to officially set a U.S. Release date for his fantastic cd, entitled +. You hear that, Atlantic Records?  Get movin’ dammit!

Oh, and by the way…Best Supporting Actor in a music video totally goes to the cat in this video.  Paws down.
