New Zealand Green-lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus)

Also known as the New Zealand Mussel, Greenshell Mussel, kuku, or kutai, the New Zealand green-lipped mussel is a species of saltwater mussel (Mytilidae) that occurs all around New Zealand’s mainland. New Zealand Green-lipped mussels typically occur below the intertidal zone, but are also often seen in the intertidal zone. Like other Mytilids, P. canaliculus feeds mainly on phytoplankton which are taken via filter feeding.
