‘Girl Meets World’: Why Disney Channel Canceled the Series & Will Netflix Save It?
It’s been a week since Disney Channel officially confirmed that comedy Girls Meet World is being canceled after three seasons, but the outpouring of strong fan reaction continues. That is no…

Girl Meets World also is one of Disney Channel’s best received series, with sharp writing, strong reviews, two consecutive best children’s program Emmy nominations for the first two seasons as well as WGA and PGA nominations.

While this is all impressive, there was one flaw in the plan to reboot Boy Meets World — going against the natural tendency for followup series to draw an older average audience as they attract viewers of the original who have aged. While for its sequel, Full House migrated from a broadcast network, ABC, to an SVOD service, Netflix, which is driven by engaged audience – any audience — Boy Meets World went from ABC, which targets primarily adults 18-49, to the much younger skewing Disney Channel, which caters to kids 6-14.

I agree with this assessment (and thanks to @shef2879  for bringing this article to my attention). The first Season of GMW, very young audience members could still relate to the stories and characters. As the show went on, it began delving into things which are harder for kids 6-14 to understand and to be explained. Episodes like Rileytown and Forgiveness, while extremely good and important stories, are harder for them to relate to.

If you look at most of the new shows that Disney is doing, they seem to be geared to that demographic. Even their advertisements are based for that age bracket. So where are teens and young adults going to turn to? They are already moving to Freeform and TeenNick. For a business model, it would make sense to start a Teen Disney channel for shows that don’t fit on Disney Channel any longer. They already have DisneyXD (which is catered to boys even though there is no reason girls wouldn’t enjoy the shows) and DisneyJr (which is catered to very young children). It seems as though once their audience reaches a certain age, they no longer care about keeping them.

I am actually surprised that That’s So Raven is getting a sequel. It will get the same nostalgia factor boost that GMW did, but after that the ratings will decline the same way.

As Michael Jacobs said, the show outgrew Disney Channel. But I’d like to add to it…Disney Channel refused to grow up with the show.

In case you don't know what's happening right now
  • Disney: Wow GMW has a huge fandom. Wow it was nominated for a LOT of awards. Wow that's a lot of people who want a season for. Wow the actors are really loved by the fans. Wow people get up really early to come to tapings. Wow fans really want to see some great stuff in a season 4. Wow it's our highest rated show. Wow it got hundreds of millions of more votes than the second highest liked show on a poll we made. Wow this is our only show with real life lessons.

GMW Fandom. I'm so proud

I know everybody’s busy trying to get Netflix to take on the series, but please, listen to this. I am so proud of us. We’ve had so many rough spots. We’ve had ship wars. Lots of them. We’ve had so many disagreements. We’ve looked at people and thought “oh they’re a ________ shipper. I don’t think I wanna follow them!” And that’s whatever, that’s the past. But look at us. We’re looking at everyone else as our fellow warriors. Our fellow survivors. We survived because of what? Because of that show.
I love that this show was not afraid to put on a POC character with autism. To put on a black boy crushing gender roles. To put on a girl who’s family life is a mess. To put on a boy who has to deal with his family’s brutal past, learning they got killed in the holocaust. To put on a boy with clear anger issues. To put on a girl who is queer IRL and who’s family roots are in Aleppo and who’s character is always searching for her place in this world.
I am so proud that we have found something this rare and beautiful. That we show enough love for the show to have an hour long episode dedicated to us. It was a giant tribute to us you guys! Sure it was bitter sweet, but it included people from around the world, a girl using ASL to deliver the theme song, an autistic and wonderful little boy, boys who watch the show because it’s not just for girls, the teens who watch the show because I should not feel ashamed to call it my favorite show. It’s just because the rest of Disney is crappy. Oh! And of course, the adorable boyfriends that came and sat in the bay window. Talking, crying, and hugging. That is OUR show. That one that accepts and SUPPORTS everyone. OUR show. This is about us!
And look what we are doing now. In the face of tragedy, we’re doing everything we can to move it to Netflix. They’re trying to get the rights! Because of our persistence and love! I am so proud of us, and glad to call this fandom my home. No matter what happens from here, thank you for the memories.
