Do you remember that car ride where I made a small comment about maybe dating a girl, and you both shot it down with laughter? Dad, do you remember telling me that it would be “gross,” at the supermarket, when I asked you how you would feel if I were bisexual? Mom, do you know how it feels to hear you say homophobic slurs and then cover it up with “I’m so glad you’re not like that”?
On this day in music history: March 26, 1988 - “Man In The Mirror” by Michael Jackson hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 weeks, also topping the R&B singles chart for 1 week on the same date. Written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard, it is the tenth solo pop and ninth R&B chart topper for “The King Of Pop”. While looking for material for the “Bad” album, producer Quincy Jones pairs singer and songwriter Siedah Garrett together with songwriter Glen Ballard together to see if they can come up with a song for Michael Jackson. When Ballard hears Garrett singing what become the songs’ chorus, he becomes excited and the pair complete the song in short order and record a demo. Garrett is so excited that she can’t wait for Jones to hear it, telling him to come right away. Giving him a cassette copy of the demo, she asks him to call her back to get his opinion on the song. Calling her back four hours later, he teases her by saying that he’s unsure about the song, before laughing out loud and saying that it’s “incredible!”. But after spending eleven months in the studio with Jackson and combing through hundreds of songs, the producer still isn’t certain that the singer will agree to record it. His fears are unfounded, as Michael reacts with the same excitement upon hearing the demo. For the songs climatic chorus, Jones brings in members of the Winans family and the Andre Crouch Choir as well as Siedah Garrett herself. When Garrett meets Michael for the first time at the studio, she extends her hand to shake his. Instead of shaking her hand, Jackson pulls her to him and kiss her on the cheek to her great surprise and delight. Released as the fourth single from “Bad” on January 19, 1988, it is another immediate smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #48 on February 6, 1988, it climbs to the top of the chart seven weeks later. “Man In The Mirror” is the fourth consecutive chart topping single from “Bad”.
Very nice BNR32 GTR that wasn’t at Racewars to compete. If the RH9R plates are accurate it would have been quick. For those unaware the RH9 club is for street driven cars in Japan that run 9 seconds over the ¼. There was another R32 GTR competing at Racewars with RH9 plates. That was the quickest car at the event and only lost out to be fastest by a poofteenth. Will be posting pics of those cars later.
