White Diamond’s Role in Corruption, for SwaggyThunder

 @swaggythunder

Again, not sure if tagging you is a good thing to do, but listen to this idea.

Remember your video about what White Diamond’s role in the Corruption Song was?

You pointed out that Blue Diamond’s “radiated pathokinesis” was tied to affecting a Gem’s emotions, and that Yellow Diamond’s electrokinesis was tied to affecting a Gem’s physical form.

You postulated that White Diamond’s ability affected memories or mental state. My theory is that you weren’t too far off, but you didn’t hit the mark exactly. My proposal:

Yellow Diamond affect a Gem’s physical state.

Blue Diamond affects a Gem’s mental state.

White Diamond affects a Gem’s very gemstone.

How did I come to such a conclusion you may ask? Take a look at Centi’s gemstone before and after Steven healed her corruption.

Before healing:

After healing:

See the difference? The black ring that surrounded the gemstone straightened out.

If you would like some more evidence, let’s assume that our very own Pearl was owned by White Diamond back in the day. Let’s not forget her skin and gemstone location match up. And before you say “But her clothes are a bunch of different colors”, a Gem can shapeshift an outfit that does not align with their gemstone’s palette, as seen with the Jaspers, Amethysts, and Carnelian working at the Zoo that all have blue uniforms, as well as nobody questioning the fact that Steven has none of Rose’s pink and white.

Look at Pearl’s gemstone:

Now look at Blue Pearl, Yellow Pearl, and Rhodonite’s Pearl gemstones.

Pretty big difference in shape, right? While it can be likely that Pearl’s gemstone was naturally deformed during her formation, and while I can’t as of yet think of how White Diamond’s power would have affected her gemstone, I do think it’s a good bit of evidence for my theory along with Centi’s gemstone.

A Gem’s gemstone is their very being. It’s responsible for their form, their mind, etc. White Diamond’s power could potentially enhance Blue and Yellow’s to the point of what we see of Corrupted Gems today. Plus, seeing as a gemstone is a Gem’s body and mind, it is understandable that affecting it would affect a Gem’s memories.

Of course, this could also raise the question of what Pink Diamond’s ability in relation to other Gems might have been, but that’s for another day…

TRIVIA

  • He is named after the mineral nephrite. Like jadeite, it is a variety of jade.
  • Sailor Jupiter killed Nephrite early on in the manga. His death was postponed until episode 24 of the anime, though. Yet in that continuity, he was killed by Zoisite’s youma rather than by a hero.
  • In one of Naoko Takeuchi’s illustrations, Nephrite was romantically paired up with Sailor Jupiter. Takeuchi never had the chance to explore the idea of Princess Serenity’s four guardian Sailor Senshi being involved with the Shitennou in the manga. While the first anime and the live-action adaptation both excluded the Sailor Senshi/Shitennou couplings, they were included in Sailor Moon Crystal. In what was likely an unrelated moment, an image of the planet Jupiter appeared when Nephrite created his Black Crystal in episode 23.
  • Nephrite was the first villain in the anime to be redeemed.
  • Nephrite and Zoisite were the only two members of the Shitennou to have signature attacks with vocal calls. In episode 23, Nephrite used a technique called Starlight Attack.
  • Unlike his peers, Nephrite adopted a human alias and persona that lasted for more than one episode. He went by the name of Masato Sanjouin (三条院正人). Broken down, the characters in his names respectively translate to: “San” (三; three), “jou” (条; article), “in” (院; institution), “Masa” (正; real), and “to” (人; person).
  • Nephrite bled green blood in episode 24. After Sailor Venus injured Zoisite and Kunzite’s hands in episode 33, those two were shown to have red blood.
  • As he crossed paths with Mamoru in episode 18 at the museum, Nephrite had a déjà vu moment where he mistook Chiba for someone else. This could have been a reference to the manga subplot where the Shitennou were once Prince Endymion’s friends and protectors in the past. The concept was otherwise never brought up in the anime.
  • Masato drove a Ferrari Testarossa 512 TR.
  • In episode 44, Nephrite appeared along with the rest of the Shitennou in a flashback. However, he did not speak.
