nell little

Black History Month → Batgirls

  • In Batgirl #24 (August 2011), Nell Little is the future Batgirl in Stephanie Brown’s dream world while the latter was under the influence of Black Mercy. (Nell later reappears as a Batgirl in DC Bombshells.)

  • During the Futures End event, set five years in an alternate future, Tiffany Fox is one of the Batgirls shown in Batgirl: Futures End (November 2014).

  • Kathy Duqesne, first seen in the animated movie Mystery of the Batwoman, makes her way into comics as one of the Batgirls in DC Bombshells #19 (November 2015), set in a WWII AU.

  • The most adapted Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, is racebent to reflect her Afro-Latina voice actress Rosario Dawson, as seen in The Lego Batman Movie (2017).

A fairly consistant thing in the Batman comics for the past twenty years or so, is how the people of Gotham are oddly flippant when it comes to Batman and his rogues. Whether it comes down civic pride, capitalism or foolhardiness tends to vary from writer to writer however.

In Batman: the Animated Series, for example, a corrupt businessman decided to deliberately model his failing casino on the Joker (claiming it was actually based on the playing card, not the mass murderer) due to him knowing that the supervillain would come to destroy the place out of spite, thus allowing the owner to collect the insurance money.

While in contrast, in Harley Quinn’s original solo book, an opportunistic themepark developer decided to cash-in on Batman, the Joker etc. on the basis that they’re well known, but are unlikely to sue. Predictably, the Joker tries to murder him for the perceived insult.

Some writers, most notably Paul Dini in his preboot work, tried to explain the shear amount of theme parks, circuses and such around Gotham by stating that back in the day it was effectively a mash-up of Coney Island, Atlantic City and New York City, but when the economy changed tourism dried up. Thus why there always seem to be abandoned themeparks for the Joker to hide in, and such.

It is interesting that Batman seems to be a part of Gotham’s tourist trade in some comics, be it in the form of Gotham Central mentioning that the Bat Signal being a source of tourist revenue, the main images of Batman themed-fast food, the tour buses from Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl series…

…Or the merch avaliable in various points of the prior, Cassandra Cain Batgirl series.

Could be that the explanation that actually seeing Batman, the Joker, the Batgirls etc. is actually so rare that people feel they can go on a Batman-themed tour bus or eat a Joker-themed burger without something terrible happening to them is in effect, I guess.

Damian + kids his own age (ft. Nell Little, Maps Mizoguchi, Colin Wilkes and Maya Ducard)

One of the things I’m most loving in the New 52 is seeing Damian interact with kids his own age, like Maya and Maps, and even start forming friendships. I still miss Colin, though

My little demon baby finally learned to form (sort of) normal relationships with kids his own age! I’m so proud. <3

(Also, check out how non-whitewashed he is in the more recent comics! THIS PLEASES ME SO MUCH.)

my role reversal au:

  • damian is conceived when bruce is training with ra’s
  • he’s delivered to bruce when damian is 10 and bruce has been batman for like 5ish years
  • bruce has no idea what to do with a child but he has a squishy little face and bruce’s eyes and bruce can’t??/ turn him down??
  • so he takes damian in, and damian being damian, wants to help bruce very!! badly!!
  • so he sneaks out a lot and eventually bruce is just like “whatever if you can’t beat em join em”
  • alfred is like “masTER BRUCE!!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!! HES A BABY!!!!!!”
  • and bruce is like “hes fine he was trained???? it’ll all b good”
  • and damian is named robin after a carving on the handle of his sword. also robins mean spring and bruce is hoping it’ll add to the light/dark theme
  • damian thinks robin is the WORST and a baby job but he toughs it out bc he wants to make his dad happy
  • damian’s been robin for like ??? 3 years?/ when damian starts doing teen titans stuff

DC Bombshells (2015-2017) + LGBT characters

So, I had an idea yesterday, which turned into a drawing, and even with just sketch lines and flats it took two whole days to get to a postable quality.  I’ll probably do proper lineart and coloring at another time, because I’m really fond of how a lot of these kids came out.

And here we have the Tiny Titans!  I love kid heroes, but last I checked, only two or three of these lovely kids even exist anymore in mainline DC continuity, so I took it upon myself to correct that mistake :P

A late night concept

Its like 3 AM but I have this vision of Damian having a little bad ass group of friends/team of heroes. You got Nell Little being awesome and cracking jokes and telling Dami how his sisters are cooler than him. You got Maps Mizoguchi being adorable and genius and cracking every code and puzzle that comes their way. She never stops acting starstruck around the major heroes. You got Jon trying his best to help people and be good in this group but none of them seem to have rules?? Or a bedtime?? You got Maya who always pops in to kick ass and turn the tides in a fight they might be losing. She’s also really good at Uno. You got Colin actually getting to interact and grow close to other characters and punching things and taking them for rides on his cool bike.

All the characters are either already developed OR have amazing potential as a character and for plot. There’s enough clashing personalities for interesting interactions and for there to be awesome and unique relationships between them. It’s DIVERSE, there’s a 3:3 girl to boy ratio, and the only thing really connecting them all is that they know Damian, whether it be as a close friend or as an ally. Just think of them all being unsure and hesitant about all working together. Slowly building actual relationships. Friendships and crushes and rivalries within this group would be so cool to watch play out.

I don’t know, I just personally think it would be really cool to see something like that.
