To talk about Homonormativity you must first understand what it is. There are many issues with this term and what it pertains to. The biggest example of this is the family dynamic that Neil Patrick Harris has. However, that is not the example I will be using. Today I will be breaking down Homonormativity in the cartoon television series American Dad, specifically the queer couple Greg and Terry.
The queer community has been included in media and pop culture more abundantly lately. Including the LGBTQ community in everyday things instead of the constant hiding them or just having subtle queer undertones. Though this is a big step forward we have the issue of Homonormativity in the media and pop cultures portrayal of the gay happy family.
Christiaan Rapcewicz adresses this issue in his article, Homonormativity, Homonationalism and the Other ‘Other’. He explains how the issue is with the fact that though a queer couple can be happy together society still expects them to live a “hetero life style”, like 2 parents, 1 or 2 kids, white and successful. “By participating in “gay” marriage, by participating in
the regulatory structure and institution of marriage, hetero (and, thus) homonormative
desire is reproduced. Again, this is dangerous. An interrogation of and a
resistance to a particular Western (U.S.-centric) liberal human rights
discourse of gay marriage and equality must occur in an attempt to cease the
reproduction of normative, heterosexual desire”.
The issue is not the fact that gay marriage and having a family being portrayed in media but rather the way they portray the expectations that has been put on the “ideal family” aspect. It is wrong to force the Hetero norms of a white family on another group of individuals. They are many queer individuals that do not fit this life style nor what to. These ideals that derive from Homonormativity need to be forgotten and portray other family’s and other queer individuals. there is not only one queer life style, there are many.
Halloween 2016: Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka's annual family photo doesn't disappoint
Ever since Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka welcomed their twins, Gideon and Harper, back in 2010, they have proved time and time again what incredible parents they are.
We mean, they are definitely up there as one of our all time fave celeb families.
The Harris-Burtka family really come into their own on Halloween, with the clan making it a tradition to post the most adorable and lovable family Halloween portraits every year, so much so that we have actually found ourselves getting excited about what they will be dressing as each year.
In short, the famous family’s Halloween costumes have become as much of an October 31st tradition as eating too many toffee apples and watching Hocus Pocus.
When Gideon and Harper turned one, Neil and David kicked off the tradition with a Peter Pan themed extravaganza, with David dressing as Peter Pan, his husband as Captain Hook, Gideon as Smee and Harper as Tinkerbell:
Aged two, Neil was the Tin Man, David the Scarecrow, Gideon the Lion, and Harper Dorothy as they recreated The Wizard Of Oz:
The next year, the proud dads dressed as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, with Gideon as The White Rabbit and Harper as Alice for their Alice In Wonderland Halloween portrait:
And then, the family decided that the only appropriate theme was, of course, Batman:
Last year, Neil proudly showed off the family’s Star-Wars-inspired costumes:
And yesterday, just when we thought that the family couldn’t get any better, they proved us wrong with this fantastic Halloween tribute to Old Hollywood:
That’s little Harper as Marilyn, Neil as Groucho Marx, David as Charlie Chaplin, and Gideon as James Dean.
Absolutely fantastic – needless to say, we are already counting down the days until Halloween 2017, just so that we can see what theme they go for next.
