James Brings it Home, #BELIEVELAND

The now three-time NBA champion and three-time NBA Finals MVP, LeBron James, has finally fulfilled his mission: Bring an NBA Championship to his hometown team. Cleveland was in an unreal championship drought of fifty-two years and at o e point, the city of Cleveland seemed to be cursed! All that changed yesterday when LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers brought Ohio their first championship since the Cleveland Brown’s 1964 chip.

In his first stint as a Cavalier, from 2003 to 2010, James averaged 27.8 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and almost 1 block a game during the regular season, playing more than forty minutes a game. This bought him Rookie of the Year honors, an NBA scoring-title, and back-to-back regular season MVP honors. Along with his eye popping post-season numbers, with almost thirty points, 7.3 assists, 8.4 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and a block a game, you would think James would’ve brought his beloved hometown team to a championship or two right? Wrong. He only ended up getting to the finals once in this stint, getting obliterated by the Spurs in four. In the other four post-seasons, the Cavs could barely get out of the second round, only doing it 2007.

Then, obviously the ugly decision took place in 2010 which served as a way to rebuild the Cavs’ broken roster and organization, as well as allowed LeBron James to mature for four seasons in Miami. Here, he may have broken every single heart in the city of Cleveland, but he learned how to lead a group of men to the NBA Finals four seasons in a row, and to an NBA championship… twice. James also realized he couldn’t do it by himself as he had tried to do in his first seven years with his hometown team. During the five years the Cavs made the cut for post-season play with LeBron James, only Cavs point guard Mo Williams made the All-Star Game… once.

When James made his epic return to Cleveland, Ohio, two summers ago, the roster was much improved, with young bucks like Andrew Wiggins (not for long, unfortunately), as well as Tristan Thompson and the Cavs’ new star in the making Kyrie Irving. All Star forward Kevin Love was then added to the mix to provide shooting and rebounding, which made the roster an immediate contender out of last year’s pretenders, only winning 33 games in the regular season the season before. Dion Waiters was eventually traded, and they received Knicks guards J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to add shooting and perimeter defense respectively.

The next two seasons, LeBron James  would lead his team to the NBA Finals twice. James averaged 28.1 points, 10.4 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game in both of those post-season runs, eventually leading to an NBA Championship, bringing that elusive championship that Cleveland, Ohio had been so desperately missing for a long time.

Now, the Cavaliers have to make sure they keep the core that the team needs, this offseason, to be successful next year. With LeBron James, J.R. Smith, Mathew Dellavedova, Timofey Mozgov, and many more heading to free agency, the organization has a lot of decisions to make. With LeBron James obviously being their number one priority, making sure that he knows success would be prominent after resigning is vital. Keeping a competitive and cohesive roster is more important now than ever before if they want to keep The Chosen One. And with Kevin Love supposedly back on the trade block, the Cavs also have to make sure not to shake up the defending champions’ roster too much, or they may not have as much success as they did last year, which is what Cleveland fans have been waiting for a long, long time.
