naval uniforms

I will love you if I never see you again, and I will love you if I never see you again, and I will love you if I see you every Tuesday. (…) I will love you as the iceberg loves the ship, and the passengers love the lifeboat, and the lifeboat loves the teeth of the sperm whale, and the sperm whale loves the flavor of naval uniforms. I will love you as a drawer loves a secret compartment, and as a secret compartment loves a secret, and as a secret loves to make a person gasp… I will love you until all such compartments are discovered and opened, and all the secrets have gone gasping into the world. I will love you until all the codes and hearts have been broken and until every anagram and egg has been unscrambled. I will love you until every fire is extinguished and rebuilt from the handsomest and most susceptible of woods. I will love you until the bird hates a nest and the worm hates an apple. I will love you as we find ourselves farther and farther from one another, where once we were so close… I will love you until your face is fogged by distant memory. I will love you no matter where you go and who you see, I will love you if you don’t marry me. I will love you if you marry someone else–and i will love you if you never marry at all, and spend your years wishing you had married me after all. That is how I will love you even as the world goes on its wicked way.

For Beatrice –  A Series of Unfortunate Events (dedications, pt. iii/xiv) +  The Beatrice Letters

This is my custom OOAK set of Queen Elsa & her King Consort Hans 1/6 Disney Store doll set.

I finally had a chance to create Hans’ Arendelle Naval uniform and updated Elsa’s Designer Ice Queen gown to be more accurate to the movie.

I added many AB (Aurora Borealis) baguette small gems to Elsa’s bodice so it would look more like a cascade of ice crystals rather than just a few scattered here and there. I also applied hundreds of 1mm AB gems at her waist/hips like in the film and also some scattered on her bodice, and all around her neckline in 3 tiers. I added more as well to her sleeves in her ‘fractal’ patterns and also lengthened her ice cape and applied hundreds more 1.5mm and 2mm crystal gems to the cape all over so it would glimmer in the light.

Hans’ uniform is entirely handmade with custom trim and tiny 1mm purple gems adorning it—his ‘medals’ and epaulettes and aiguillette were such fun to make! (Hans has been rebodied onto a Mattel Fashionista jointed male body for better accuracy to the character’s build.)

Both Hans and Elsa have been given new faceups, detailing and hairstyling. (Hans’s hair I painted in more reddish iridescent tones, rather than just browns.)

I hope you like them, too! I think I’m finally satisfied with them! What do you think?

…concept design and production art for ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ (2004) - scripted and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Toshio Suzuki, animated by Studio Ghibli & distributed by Toho - based on British writer, Diana Wynne Jones’ novel of the same name…

For Helsaween, I had wanted to draw Helsa, but due to many rush Halloween commissions and unexpected home renovations, I was unable to get one done in time. :( But I do promise one certainly for my birthday week in late Nov!

Anyway, I did manage to make my Hans doll his Arendelle admiral/naval uniform and so instead went out and took some photos of them riding Sitron (after he nudged Hans to do so during their portrait taking! ^.~) for the Helsaween celebration! (Hope it’s okay? :gomen ne!:) Thanks for inviting me, jg-omniaart -san! @jg-omniaart

More full photos of them soon, too! I redid my Elsa doll’s gown and cape at the same time I made Hans his uniform, so I couldn’t help but take new photos together! :)

“I will love you as the iceberg loves the ship, and the passengers love the lifeboat and the lifeboat loves the teeth of the sperm whale, and the sperm whale loves the flavor of naval uniforms. ”

- Lemony Snicket, The Beatrice Letters

“Naval and military uniform during this same period (the Romantic period) was admirably suited to the rather sexually emphatic display of men’s bodies. Military trousers where white or buff, coats were dark and brilliant with braid and buttons, boots were black and shiny. Between the gleaming short-waisted coat (or breastplate) and the glittering boots was a soft, creamy expanse of pale, tight-fitting doeskin. Paintings of Napoleonic heroes in action display this costume, which has the effect of riveting the eye on the male crotch in a way not customary in art since the prevalence of the sixteenth-century codpiece.” - Seeing Through Clothes, Anne Hollander [click image for details]

I recently did this Helsa portrait inspired by a scene in my sister’s Frozen fanfiction: ‘Frozen Again: But the Greatest of These is Love’

I plan to do another Helsa portrait from the story, as well as at least one Kristoff x Anna (Kristanna)  and a Eugene x Rapunzel (Eupunzel) from key romantic scenes.

I hope you like it!

(Click on the image to view the larger full sized version.)

It’s set when Queen Elsa has just commissioned Hans in a spur of the moment necessity, to be a Kommander in her navy, in order to command a ship to help rescue a kidnapped Anna!

Anyway, it’s really an awesome sequel story and if you’re a Frozen, Helsa, Kristanna and Eupunzel fan, you might like to read it!

It’s located here:

More Frozen Again portraits to come soon!!!

:hugs to all:

God bless!!!

Okay I’m willing to admit I’m wrong about the nazi uniform thing.

I sometimes knee-jerk in opposition to Kotaku, and I’ve seen people cry about ‘nazi uniforms’ that were just japanese naval uniforms so many times now I jump to that reaction

Okay. But what if after meeting Milah in that tavern Captain Killian Jones went back to his cabin and took a look at himself in the mirror and realized just how much he looked like a pirate with his scraggly hair and unkept shirt. And while he likes the red vest he misses the high collar of his naval uniform; he thought it gave him a bit of stature. He thinks maybe it’s time for a change. He is quite taken with Milah even though she has a husband and nothing will happen he sees no reason why he shouldn’t look his best the next time he is in her little port.

So he orders a complicated velvet black vest and he gets his hair cut and he shines his shoes. And the next time he sees her he can’t tell if she likes him better this way but she sits and has a drink and listens to his stories so it feels like it was worth it.

And finally, #13 – King (Consort) Hans x Queen Elsa, anime style

I actually drew Hans in 2 outfits—his Southern Isles naval uniform (from the movie), and also, the Arendelle naval uniform. Since these are ‘couple’ portraits, I decided in the end that the Arendelle uniform would be more fitting, timeframe-wise, so I went with that. (But I’ll post his Southern Isles uniform version tomorrow, too, just because he’s gorgeous in both outfits!)
