Australia (naval ensign, 1967-present)

Today is Australia Day (in this time zone anyway) so I figured I’d show off my favourite Australian flag. The Australian White Ensign is based on the British White Ensign, but with the St George’s Cross replaced by the Commonwealth Star and Southern Cross of the Australian flag.

I’m generally not a huge fan of British ensigns, but this is one of the more attractive ones. I’d daresay it’s actually better looking than the original White Ensign.

The flag of Poland consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width, the upper one white and the lower one red. The two colors are defined in the Polish constitution as the national colors. A variant of the flag with the national coat of arms in the middle of the white stripe is legally reserved for official use abroad and at sea. A similar flag with the addition of a swallow-tail is used as the naval ensign of Poland. White and red were officially adopted as national colors in 1831.
On 2nd May we celebrate National Flag Day in Poland.

Bolivia (Naval ensign, 1966-Present)

Today is Day of the Sea, the day when Bolivia symbolically asks Chile for the return of the coastal territories it lost during the War of the Pacific. The now-landlocked nation still has a naval force on Lake Titicaca, although its main purpose seems to be to participate in military parades.

The Bolivian naval ensign has nine small stars representing the nine current departments of Bolivia and one larger star representing the lost Litoral Department

Maine (Naval ensign, 1939-Present)

It’s Patriot’s Day in Maine and Massachusetts, which happen to be the only two U.S. states with distinct naval ensigns. Maine’s ensign, officially designated as the “merchant and marine flag”, is a white flag with a green pine tree featuring the state’s motto (Dirigo, Latin for “I lead”) above the pine and the state’s name below. This is way better than the state flag, which is of the standard seal-on-a-bedsheet variety.
