Montrose Beach Dunes, for Nature Conservancy

For the new issue of Nature Conservancy, I was asked to draw a pair walking through the Montrose Beach Dunes, just outside of Chicago on Lake Michigan. The dunes are the subject of extensive conservation efforts, and are home to a variety of plant and bird species, cared for by dedicated volunteers.

I love how the different species of grass spread across the dunes in an almost graphic way – like horizontal bars, receding in space. I wanted to capture this as best as I could, while also offering a taste of what it might feel like to walk through the Dunes an early summer day.
