  • ❝ My only regret is I didn’t kill ‘em myself. ❞
  • ❝ You’re dead! Wait, does that mean I’m dead?!  ❞
  • ❝ Well that’s what I get for betting it all on black. ❞
  • ❝ You survive everything I ever threw at you only to die now, like this? ❞
  • ❝ Do me a favor and die already. I got a business to run! ❞
  • ❝ Is this some kind of joke? Trying to run me outta Gotham?  ❞
  • ❝ I can see the same fire in your eyes. Before this night is through… that fire will consume you. ❞
  • ❝ I’m going to steal all your money, and destroy everything you’ve built here, okay? ❞
That Nature (meaning Death) always wins but that doesn’t mean we have to bow and grovel to it. That maybe even if we’re not always so glad to be here, it’s our task to immerse ourselves anyway: wade straight through it, right through the cesspool, while keeping eyes and hearts open. And in the midst of our dying, as we rise from the organic and sink back ignominiously into the organic, it is a glory and a privilege to love what Death doesn’t touch.

"care to give me a back scratch?" ....spacedogs?? I am not a trash possum....I'm uh, someone else

Oh yes, you’re definitely not any trash possum I know. But, you know, just in case a certain trash possum I do know of is interested, I’m going to tag @hotsauce418. Better safe than sorry and all.

Also this is me wading into the waters of a/b/o with a little Alpha!Adam and Omega!Nigel. Sorry not sorry.

Tired and bored of work, Nigel tossed his phone onto an end table and turned his attention to Adam.

Adam was sat on the sofa, an expression on his face far too serious for someone who was watching a film on TV. He attacked every task with a level of focus and determination that left Nigel unable to resist touching him up and teasing him until he put a smile on his face.

He watched Adam’s eyes follow the characters on screen for a moment, and then heaved himself onto the sofa, face down in Adam’s lap.

“Care to give me a back scratch, gorgeous?” he asked, arching his shoulder blades up for effect.

Without taking his eyes off the screen, Adam ran his fingers over Nigel’s back, short nails digging in in all the right places. Nigel groaned.

“Your heat must be coming soon,” Adam said absently.

“Why do you say that?”

“Because you always demand more affection from me within forty-eight hours of your heat arriving,” Adam explained as he picked at a small bump he’d found near Nigel’s shoulder. Nigel shifted around, squirming away from his touch until he returned to scratching.“It’s likely due to the hormonal shifts you’re experiencing.”

Adam slipped his hand beneath Nigel’s shirt. His fingers were cold, and Nigel shivered as they moved up his spine. Above him, Adam huffed out a soft laugh.

Adam wasn’t wrong. Maybe it was part of Nigel’s personality, or maybe it was his years of posturing to hide the fact that he was an omega, but short of four days every month Nigel publicly took the role of dominant partner. But then his hormones would shift and it would come. Behind closed doors Nigel would find himself rubbing up against Adam, as desperate for attention as a barn cat. It made his face go red just thinking about it.

In a world of nature versus nurture, nature always had to fucking win out in the end.

“You little shit,” Nigel mumbled. He pressed his face into the soft skin of Adam’s stomach. “You keeping notes about me like a science experiment?”

“No. I’m just stating an observation.”

“What other ‘observations’ have you made about me, gorgeous?”

Adam ran his nails around the curve of Nigel’s shoulder blade. Goosebumps sprung up on his skin. While Adam considered the question, Nigel busied himself with wedging an arm between Adam’s back and the sofa, so he could wrap his arms around his waist and keep him close.

Adam smelled so sweet. Like soap, and the spices he’d used while making their dinner. Nigel inhaled deeply, scenting him.

“You pretend to like beer, but whenever we go out you end up drinking half of my cocktail instead. Your nose twitches when you’re upset,” Adam said. “You seem to enjoy receiving affection more than giving it, but you’re reluctant to admit it. You only ever ask for it during your heat and I don’t understand why.”

Nigel turned his head, just enough to peer up at Adam. Adam had taken his eyes off the TV entirely in favor of watching his fingers move beneath the fabric of Nigel’s t-shirt.

Nigel nuzzled his stomach. “Damn. Read me like a book, didn’t you?”

“No. The books I read are difficult to understand,” Adam said with a smile. “You’re mostly very easy.”

Very carefully, Nigel untangled himself from Adam’s lap so that he could sit up. He kissed Adam, nuzzling their noses together when he drew back.

“What did I ever do to deserve a sweet little alpha like you?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Adam said, puzzled frown creeping onto his face. Nigel kissed it away. “But Nigel, if you want affection from me, you don’t have to hold back until your heat. I enjoy touching you and making you happy.”

“I know, darling. Old habits die hard, I guess,” Nigel said. “You going to stay home and fuck me when my heat gets here? Keep me feeling good?”

“Of course. My work has special leave for mated alphas, you know that.”

Adam’s voice was serious, but the way a grin played about the corners of his mouth told Nigel he was only winding him up. Nigel stood and, before Adam could stop him, swept his alpha into his arms and carried him off towards the bedroom. Adam laughed and clutched at his shoulders.

“Then why not practice until then?” Nigel asked and kicked the bedroom door shut behind them.

I was inspired by clingy Keith so…

clenches fist just, Keith and Lance sitting next to each other at the table like usual except Keith keeps brushing his foot against Lance’s and sitting close enough so their thighs touch. neither of them would call it playing footsie under the table but they’re playing footsie under the table.

BACKHUGS because Keith is too impatient to even wait for Lance to turn around, especially after a mission. Keith runs up to him and just barrels into Lance’s back and wraps his arms around his middle and puts his chin on his shoulder, eliciting a bubbly laugh from Lance. Keith’s embrace is so tight Lance can’t turn around to reciprocate, so he leans forward and bumps Keith up onto his back and parades around with his backpack boyfriend. If he does this for too long though he’ll slowly sink to the ground from exhaustion—because damn Keith you’re heavy—and he’ll take Keith with him. Keith just lays on him until Lance complains about his arm going numb but he’s still grinning like a kid.

and they might be boyfriends but a layer of that rivalry is still there so sometimes Keith initiates a wrestle-your-boyfriend session, usually at Lance’s provocation. Keith always wins, naturally, but Lance doesn’t mind because after Keith wrestles him down Keith nuzzles into Lance’s neck and covers him in laugh-y sappy kisses and they end up cuddling on the ground, tangled up together but 100% comfortable.

and obviously their signature sign of affection is the loving Forehead Touch. they’d be sitting next to each other in a peaceful quiet, when Keith crawls onto Lance’s lap and caresses the side of his face, closing his eyes and resting his forehead against Lance’s. they stay there for a bit, with breathy laughter about nothing until Keith moves in for a kiss a little too eagerly and they lose their balance and plop onto the floor, breaking into a fit of laughter. Then Lance pulls Keith down for a kiss and that i-love-you-so-much-i-might-die feeling wrenches Keith’s gut and he swears he could stay there like that forever and he’d be perfectly content.

I feel I have something very serious and urgent to say to you, my non-existent reader and I feel I should say it as urgently as if I were standing in the room with you. #9, The Secret

Short opinion: This is one of those books where the only thing more terrifying than the alien invasion is the planet the aliens are trying to invade.

Long opinion:

Although it’s not my favorite of the series, this book has a lot of really cool moments, both light (Marco referencing the Ramones, Cassie’s dad making her pick up the skunk, GRAPE JUICE) and dark (Cassie’s panic after killing the termite queen, everyone’s near-death in the logging camp battle).  This plot also nicely resolves the question of why the yeerks aren’t doing more to find the “andalites” allegedly living in the area through showing that, although humans might destroy forests and shoot skunks, humans also do a lot to protect their own planet.

Another thing I love about this book: Marco and Jake’s interaction.  It only gets mentioned a few times in this book (and comes up again a couple times later in the series), but one of my favorite Little Things from the series is Marco and Jake’s ongoing Batman vs. Spider-Man debate.  I am really fascinated that Jake argues in favor of Batman and Marco is so in favor of Spider-Man, given that Jake is a tactician who fights primarily through quick hit-and-run attacks (like Spider-Man) whereas Marco is a strategist who fights by thinking ahead of his opponents and coming up with creative ways to have them solve his problems for him (like Batman).  Maybe it’s a matter of mutual respect for one another’s abilities, or a tendency to discount their own abilities.  After all, Marco tends to describe his strategic perspective as “simple” and “clear,” whereas Jake continuously underestimates his impact on the team no matter what it is.

Then again, maybe Jake is such a fan of Batman because Bruce Wayne is (like him) a pensive, privileged justice-fighter focused on working hard to teach himself the skills he needs to be effective at his job.  And maybe Marco sees himself in Spider-Man, since Peter Parker’s a goofy kid who gets thrown into a situation way over his head and spends the next several years flailing around trying to rise to the occasion.  Or maybe they just played too many arcade games.  Maybe they just need to watch this.

The other scene from this book that I really love is the one where Jake finds Cassie after she falls asleep in skunk morph protecting the baby skunks and he yells at her for being careless.  She tells him she wants out of the war and that humans suck so much they might as well get taken over by yeerks; Jake calmly shuts her down when offers to go explain to Tom that he deserves to be enslaved by the yeerks according to Cassie’s philosophy.  Cassie tells Jake that she’s saving the baby skunks no matter what, to which Jake responds that in that case they’d better recruit the whole team.

I love this scene for a couple different reasons.  For one thing, it’s refreshing to see Cassie being wrong for once.  In the series as a whole and in this book in particular there are several moments where she makes relatively dumb decisions that end up working out for her anyway (trusting Aftran, refusing to help with Taylor’s plan, letting Tom’s yeerk take the morphing cube, letting Aftran infest her, etc).  In this instance, however, Cassie nearly gets herself trapped in morph over some baby skunks, and she risks her friends’ lives when just a few minutes ago she was angry with Tobias for killing to survive.  She’s wrong, and both she and Jake acknowledge it.

This scene is also one of the many reasons I ship Cassie and Jake: they call each other out on bad decisions and resolve their differences of opinion through talking things out.  Jake is wrong to dismiss Cassie’s concerns about the logging permits, as he freely admits later in the book.  Cassie is wrong to tell Jake that the fight doesn’t matter in a universe this brutal when (unlike him) she doesn’t have any loved ones on the line in this war.  They discuss their differences of opinion and resolve them.

Not only do they discuss their disagreement openly, but they also both make concessions.  Cassie agrees that she needs to be a lot more careful in the future, especially with morphing time limits.  Jake agrees that (even though he doesn’t see the point) they’ll “save the lousy skunks” (#9).  They listen to each other and find a solution.  It’s a pattern that comes up several more times over the course of the series: Jake and Cassie are the only ones willing to tell each other when one of them is wrong, but always do so in a way that avoids polarization or passive aggression.  (Rachel and Tobias do not do nearly as well with this kind of conflict resolution when the circumstances arise, but that’s a whole other can of yeerks I’m not going to open here.)

Jake and Cassie might not have a perfect relationship—it doesn’t even survive the war, and its passion pales in comparison to what Rachel and Tobias have—but they also have a healthy relationship.  Jake mentions a few times that the only time he feels able to drop the whole “I’m the leader, I feel no pain” act is when he’s alone with Cassie.  Cassie agonizes over every major decision they make but also never stops trusting that Jake knows what he’s doing when he makes a tough call.  Their arguments don’t have a single winner, and involve both of them openly confronting each other with their own points of view.  They work to understand each other, since there are a lot of things they do not have in common, and that work might make for less melodrama but also makes for better communication.

Final note: the motif of Visser Three doing dumb shit and none of the human-controllers in the immediate vicinity who must know better correcting him comes up here.  It’s another one of those Little Things that K.A. Applegate uses to speak volumes about why the yeerks lost the war just as much as the Animorphs won it.  This book shows that it’s a bad idea to behead subordinates who disagree with you, because then you end up surrounded by sycophants who never once mention that you just dyed yourself purple for no reason.

'You’ve done far more than enough. A hundred times more than enough. But the Yeerks are still here.’

I shrugged. 'The strong eat the weak,’ I said. 'It’s part of nature. Humans always win, other animals always lose. Maybe it’s our turn to lose.’

Jake nodded. 'This isn’t about some race called humans. It’s about people we know. People we see every day. My brother, Tom, is one of them. So why don’t you go tell Tom it’s okay that he’s a slave of the Yeerks because it’s our turn to get hammered?'”

- Book #9: The Secret (Cassie), pg. 113 (by K.A. Applegate)

Nature always wins.

I wasn’t sure whether to put it in pettyrevenge or here since the effort was pretty petty but the results were pro.

This story takes place on my families farm. It’s a small hobby farm we bought about 10 years ago and has two lots cut off the front corners which were sold to two older couples before we bought it. They were both very nice and there was lots of space and privacy so life was good.

On the farm we have four dogs, but the two who will be the stars of this story are two maremma’s whose job it is to protect the farm and the animals from a very large pack of coyotes who roam the area. They do this by going to the edges of the property and making a lot of noise to discourage the pack from even coming towards the farm.

About a year ago the proverbial shit hit the fan. One of the couples moved into a retirement home and left the house to their son and his wife, unfortunately these two were the classic definition of city slickers. They jumped at every cricket chirp and frog ribbit and we’re especially upset when they learnt it was a 20 minute drive to the grocery store. They also brought a very small chihuahua and a very fat cat with them.

A couple of nights after the couple had moved in we got a phone call complaining about the dogs, that they were barking at the couple and threatening their cat. This was strange behavior for the dogs so we apologized, and brought them to meet the couple so the dogs would recognize them as friends. While we were there we found out that they had been letting their cat roam outside at night, we told them that was a bad idea and probably bringing the coyotes in closer and forcing our dogs to come deal with the threat. A few hours later we went home thinking everything had been taken care of.

We were wrong. We continued to get phone calls complaining about the dogs on a daily basis and since you can only repeat yourself so many times we eventually gave up on trying to reason with them and started locking the dogs inside through the day as well as ignoring their phone calls. Since we weren’t responding anymore they called animal control, who having met our dogs on numerous occasions, told them they were being ridiculous. After about a month of daily calls to us and animal control we got a call saying that they had bought a gun and if our dogs came near their property again they would shoot them. This was not something we wanted to risk so we immediately went out and installed an invisible fence around the property closest to the house and barns that absolutely had to be protected, this left almost a kilometer of land between the dogs and the couple and made sure they would not be protected (harassed) by the dogs any more.

About a week later we found out that their cat had been killed and eaten by coyotes almost immediately after the fence had gone up and a month after that they sold the house and moved.

I was more than happy to see them go but I do feel sorry for the cat.
