May 24, 2013 I performed at the #NaturalHairBridalShow at Alhambra Palace in Chicago. I met #Dwele and #Brown Audio, who also performed, at this naturally amazing event. I was dressed by #TheDoubleStitchTwins who also hosted the show. I styled my hair using #MYDNA Hair Butter in a Braid Out Side Sweep Up Do. Natural Bridal Hair styles and curl friends with beautiful bridal apparel and dresses filled the room. This event has relevance to the #NationalBridalMarket Protest I organized at Merchandise Mart in Chicago in March 2012. I worked as a model for a couple of designers at the National Bridal Market in twice. Each time I went to the model call I was instructed not to wear my hair curly and do make sure it’s nice and straight for the bridal look. I noticed at the show I didn’t see any models with natural hair. Not one curl friend in sight. Every woman of color had straight hair. No waves, no kinks, no curls, simply bone straight or a weave/wig that was doing the job. I chose to wear a wig both times. I didn’t feel like straightening my hair for a 72 hour model gig that wasn’t financially justified if it were to cause heat damage to my hair. The second year I tried showing up with curly hair on the first day of the show. I was instructed to go get a wig to portray a wedding look or work as a dresser for the models. This was very upsetting and I haven’t worked the National Bridal Market since 2010. In 2012,due to the discrimination I experienced, I organized a protest and we marched in front of the merchandise mart after we were escorted out the building from the show floor by security. My story was shared with many women of color and women who simply don’t have naturally straight hair. Were often told that the ideal look is straight for brides. I love my groom to be straight, but my hair will have plenty of curves on my wedding day. Thank you #NaturalHairBride for creating this event for the kinky, curly, wavy, cotton candy tresses. I look forward to the next one.
