Hello followers, I wanted to share this with you. Please if you can share or spread the word, it would really help!
On August 15th, I was sent an e-mail from the University of Maryland telling me that my registration will be terminated if I do not pay the balance in my student account before the 20th of August. That’s in 4 days.
As a DACAmented (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) student, this is a huge obstacle. The debt that I have is due to my inability to pay two payments during my sophomore year of college. My father is the one who has paid all of my college education because he only wants me to focus on my studies and not work. I am currently a multi-platform journalism major and minoring in United States Latino/a Studies. I am currently the President of the American Indian Student Union and the Native American Community Organizing Student Intern at the Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy office at UMD. I am involved in the Coalition of Latinx Student Organizations (CLSO), I am a DJ at the WMUC radio station, I am a Staff Reporter at The Writer’s Bloc and my writings have been published at Plex, The Clarice magazine, and The Diamondback Diversions. I have received the Sarah Winnemucca award in May 2016, due to my involvement in the indigenous community and advocating for indigenous students at UMD.
In high school, before I was accepted into DACA, which gave me a temporary citizenship status and provided me with my first ID, I believed that college was not attainable for me. Living with the undocumented status, I did not think it was possible. But after seeing that the University of Maryland accepted DACA students, I took the chance and only applied there and to Towson University. After being accepted into UMD, I was thrilled to know that I can achieve an advanced education.
I have worked extremely hard despite challenges and my family and I have sacrificed greatly for me to continue my education. It will be a huge blessing if I am able to pay this fine in full before the deadline. Anything helps, anything will be a relief to my current situation. Thank you!
