“In the first magazine, the first images that appear there are drawings. They wanted to use maps from the very beginning, because that was how they could tell people about their expeditions,” says Julius Wiedemann, an editor at Taschen who recently combed through 128 years of National Geographic’s design archives to make selections for a new anthology. National Geographic Infographics ($70), the resulting book, comes out this week.
