nasa remembers

  • Keith: All my life came to pieces when the love of my life failed me...
  • Shiro: What did you did this time Lance?
  • Lance: It's not me! he just remembered when NASA said Pluto wasn't a planet anymore because he was so small and didn't gravitated like all the others did
  • Keith: He was just SO YOUNG! Pluto did nothing wrong!
  • Lance: We know babe, Pluto's just a lil misunderstood baby who doesn't understand how gravitational forces work

This is our home

Look what happens if we zoom out from our home to the solar system

Let’s zoom out further….

Let’s keep going

A little more…

And finally, the entire observable universe and our place in it. We are so tiny and insignificant- like a tiny bread crumb in a large jar.

So if you’re ever feeling upset about something, just remember this!

I am just a speck, on a speck, orbiting another speck, with a bunch of other specks, in the middle of galactic specklessness. What I think and feel doesn’t matter at all. But then, I thought, wait, I have a brain just ‘this’ big, and with that you can imagine all of this, you can know the cosmos and your place within it, you can know your place in space, and that is wonderful, that is remarkable, that is venerable. Being a speck is worthy of respect.
So class of 2015 here’s wishing you the joy of discovery; keep reaching, keep seeking, keep using your abilities to bring out the best in those around you, and let them bring out the best in you. Become the next great generation, you can and you will, dare I say it, change the world.

Ad Astra, John Glenn (1921-2016)

An astronaut.

A pilot.

A husband.

A father.

A United States Senator.

An American hero.

An original.

John Glenn (1921-2016) was all those things and more. When he rocketed into space on Feb. 20, 1962, to become the first American to orbit Earth, the flight set the nation on course to meet ever-more ambitious goals.

The life and career of Senator Glenn eclipses those of many. In spite of his accomplishments, he was a humble and gracious man (and 4-term U.S. senator).

During Glenn’s first flight, a scheduled 30-minute test to determine whether Glenn could fly the capsule manually became a matter of life and death when the automatic system malfunctioned after the first orbit.

“I went to manual control and continued in that mode during the second and third orbits, and during re-entry,” Glenn recalled later.

“The malfunction just forced me to prove very rapidly what had been planned over a longer period of time.”

Another problem seemed even more serious – telemetry indicated the spacecraft’s heat shield was loose. It seemed possible that Glenn and the spacecraft would be incinerated on re-entry.

Glenn left the retrorocket pack in place to steady the heat shield during re-entry. “It made for a very spectacular re-entry from where I was sitting,” he said. Big chunks of the burning material came flying by the window.

He wasn’t sure whether the flaming debris was the rocket pack or the heat shield breaking up. “Fortunately,” he told an interviewer,“ it was the rocket pack – or I wouldn’t be answering these questions.”

In the words of President Obama, who awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012: “When John Glenn blasted off from Cape Canaveral atop an Atlas rocket in 1962, he lifted the hopes of a nation. And when his Friendship 7 spacecraft splashed down a few hours later, the first American to orbit the Earth reminded us that with courage and a spirit of discovery there’s no limit to the heights we can reach together. With John’s passing, our nation has lost an icon and Michelle and I have lost a friend. John spent his life breaking barriers, from defending our freedom as a decorated Marine Corps fighter pilot in World War II and Korea, to setting a transcontinental speed record … The last of America’s first astronauts has left us, but propelled by their example we know that our future here on Earth compels us to keep reaching for the heavens.  On behalf of a grateful nation, Godspeed, John Glenn.”

Glenn left the Astronaut Corps in 1964 and resigned from the Marine Corps in 1965. And, after some time in private industry ran for and was elected ti the U.S. Senate in 1974, carrying all 88 counties of Ohio. He was re-elected in 1980 with the largest margin in Ohio history. Ohio returned him to the Senate for a third term in 1986. In 1992 he was elected again, becoming the first popularly elected senator from his state to win four consecutive terms.

During his last term he was the ranking member of both the Governmental Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Air/Land Forces in the Senate Armed Services Committee. He also served on the Select Committee on Intelligence and the Special Committee on Aging. He was considered one of the Senate’s leading experts on technical and scientific matters, and won wide respect for his work to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

In 1998, Glenn flew on the STS-95 Discovery shuttle flight, a 9-day mission during which the crew supported a variety of research payloads including deployment of the Spartan solar-observing spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform, and Glenn’s investigations on space flight and the aging process.

NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden remembers, “Senator Glenn’s legacy is one of risk and accomplishment, of history created and duty to country carried out under great pressure with the whole world watching.”

Today, we honor him for all that he stood for and continues to stand for – grace under pressure, humility, ability, strength.

Godspeed, John Glenn.

every time I watch The Martian, or think about me possibly working at NASA, I remember that the Ares III crew were all born in the 1990s and early 2000s

I’m literally their age

Watney was born in 1994, Vogel was born in 1994, Lewis was born in 1995, Martinez was born in 1996, Beck was born in 1999, Johansson was born in 2006

I was born in 1996

I remind myself like every day that most people don’t become astronauts or peak in their careers until their 30s or 40s so I have a lot of time to get the knowledge I need to possibly do something incredible

About a year ago, I became completely obsessed with the actor who played Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spiderman 2. Dane Dehaan. He’s all I would talk about, and I watched almost every single movie he was involved in.

Yesterday I’m sitting in the kitchen and I hear my mom talking about these plays we used to go to in North Carolina put on by NASA and I remember that Dane Dehaan used to go there. Somethign in my head is saying, ‘that one guy looked super nerdy, but was rather attractive too… what if it was him. WHAT THE HECK, I’LL LOOK IT UP FOR FUN,’ i think and casually search the two gentlemen of verona dane dehaan, and DO YOU KNOW WHAT COMES UP?!

Sa Buhay ng Isang Engineering Student

As i was scanning my Facebook account’s images, bigla kong nahagilap ito and it brings back those past moments bilang isang engineering student.

This result comes from the ever walang pakisamang Mechanics. Yung tipong
“Brad, anong score mo?”
“Siro nga din eh ahahah!”
“Eh anong highest natin?”
“5.5/100 whahaha!” (May butal pang 0.5 ahahaha)

Kudos! To the future engineers!

In the end of the day kapag nakagraduate ka at pumasa na sa board, masasabi mo nalang eh “Nakazero nga ako noon, Engineer naman na ako ngayon”

The common question is, why do you need more money when you already had a successful Kickstarter back in 2012?

The answer is, Space is complicated, and movies are expensive to make. Many of our estimated costs went over, and the project grew beyond what we had originally anticipated by interviewing more people and exploring issues that we had never thought of. For example, we anticipated doing about 15 interviews with the project started, we ended doing more than 50. That was necessary to get the most complete unbiased opinion of this story, it was of the utmost importance that this story be told truthfully.

As referenced in the pie chart above, every cent gets spent on the movie, the fundraising fees, and the Kickstarter rewards to you. The choice was made early on to make a first class documentary film about our space program, rather than a second class film that doesn’t cover all the issues.

Our film asks, why in over 40 years haven’t we returned to the Moon, or sent humans onto Mars? We explore issues and we bring problems to light that always are not the most positive things to talk about. But it’s important to remember that NASA has been the only organization to send humans to the Moon, or a rover to Mars, or do many of the exciting things that make up our space program today. We love NASA, what it stands for, and all that it has done.

So I want to say thank you to NASA, to the NASA workers, the astronauts, the clerical staff, the engineers, the political staff in DC, everyone who makes NASA run. Not everyone agrees how things should be done, but amazing things have been done, we just want to see more of it.

Also, thank you in advance for supporting, sharing, and visiting our Kickstarter page. I hope you have the opportunity to contribute and see our film later this year.

With your continued efforts through backing and advocacy, we’ll send a message to every member of Congress in solidarity for the #FightforSpace.

If you haven’t said ‘I love you’ to someone today, do it. You won’t always be happy, but you should try to be. Don’t be too afraid of germs. Those people have no fun. Remember to look around sometimes. You might see something you haven’t seen before or at the very least avoid being hit by a flying object. Speaking of flying objects, don’t spend your life looking for extraterrestrial life, unless you work for NASA. Remember that you always have to cooperate with someone. Life is an endless negotiation. Play fair. Stay out of jail. Don’t live in the past. Eat breakfast. It really is the most important meal of the day. Try to make new friends, even when you think you’re too old to do that. …And finally, remember this" 'Yes’ is always a better work than 'no’. Unless, of course, someone has just asked you to commit a felony.

Chapter 2

“Sisters! Kapatiran! Kabagang! Ka-federation! Bakla siya friend! Bakla!” Sef yelled.

“Grabe ka naman sa kanya, Sef.” Julie told him.

She was a little hurt dahil parang na-love at first sight siya kay Elmo. Yes she admits. Gwapo nga kasi and mukhang mabait. And ayaw niya tanggapin that Sef would think Elmo’s gay.

“Sorry to break your heart this early bff. Pero di mo ba nasmell?” Sef asked.

Osige. Dare tayo bet? Kung hindi siya kapatiran, then I’ll help you pa with him. Pero if he’s like yours truly, then miss movin’ on ka na okay?” he said.

“Fine.” she said, determined to win their bet.

“Oh. Gorabels na akiz ha? Gorabels pa akiz kay mudra. Lamona. Birthday eh.” Sef told her saka na bumeso sa kanya.

“Alright. Happy Birthday kay tita okay? I texted her already. Sinabi ko di ako makakapunta sa inyo.”

“Okay friend. Ingat ka pag-uwi ha? Tanga ka pa naman. Hahahaha.” asar ng kaibigan tsaka na nagmadaling umalis sa location.

She bid goodbye to the whole team tsaka na rin siya umalis sa location. Napagod siya kahit pa nakaupo lang naman sila ni Sef while the others go about their work.

She entered her garage and was about to open her main door nang makarinig ng paparating na kotse. She was curious on who would the owner be. Hinintay niyang bumaba ang driver and was surprised to see who it was.

“Elmo?” her heart started beating faster. Natutuwa siya na nagtataka why this guy’s here. Could it be that he likes her too? So why is he here?

She walked up to her gate and called his attention.

“Arch. Magalona what are you doing here?” she asked. Sakto lumingon ito sa kanya.

“Oh. Hi, Julie!” bati nito. “I live here.” turo niya sa bahay sa tapat.

“Maqui’s house?”

“Yeah. You know my cousin?” he asked. Cousin. Buti na lang pinsan lang. Akala niya kasi… Nevermind.

“Ah. Yeah. We’ve been neighbors for 5 years. Magpinsan pala kayo? How come I only saw you now?” pagtataka nito.

“I just moved in yesterday morning. Galing kasi ako sa Cebu for a project and since wala pa naman akong makitang bahay, my cousin offered her house for me to stay in.” he replied.

“Oh alright. Nice to meet you new neighbor!”

“You too!” he replied at saka na pumasok sa loob.

She dialled Sef’s number and waited for her dearest bestfriend to answer her call.

“What is it, Julie Anne?” Sef said on the other line.

“He lives here bakla.” she answered, sounding excited.

“Huh? Sinetch?” he asked.

“Elmo!” Julie announced.

“What?! As in over there sa baler mo girl?” gulat na tanong ni Sef. “Grabe ka naman friend. Desperate much?”

“Gaga! Sa tapat kasi. Sa bahay ni Maqui.” she said.

“Ay! Wala na girl. Girlfriend pala si Maqui. Kalukadidang ka lang niyan.”

“Bobo naman Sef. Magpinsan kasi sila.”

“Oh pero smell ko pa din siya so di pa din kayo mtb.”

“What’s mtb?”

“Meant to be! Mga tanong naman friend. Bobo ka na ba? Ha?” mataray na tanong nito.

“Grabe ka naman talaga sa akin Sef. Ang sama mo talaga.” she said.

“Hahaha. Charot lang. Oh anetch pa ang news mo?”

“Wala na. I just called to tell you na we’re neighbors.” she replied.

“Alright. Observe his every move ha? Remember friend ang bet natin. Okay?”

“Fine fine. Whatever. Sige na bakla. I have to sleep na. Maaga pa tayo tomorrow.” and she hung up the phone.

“Maq, I’m home!” Elmo said the moment he got in.

“Hey there, cousin! Anyare sa site mo?” she asked.

“Ayos naman. Almost done na sila. Ikaw? What did you do today?” Elmo asked. He and his cousin, Maqui are the best of friends. Sobrang close silang magpinsan and they are inseparable since birth. And sabay din sila lumaki.

“Well, busy sa resto kanina. Ang daming customers.” Maqui said. Busy itong magluto while Elmo sat on the bar stool on the bar counter in the kitchen. He loves watching his cousin cook. Ang saya kasi panuorin nito. Halatang nag-eenjoy sa ginagawa.

“Good to hear.” he said. “Hm. Nga pala Maq, yung neighbor mo sa tapat?”

“Si Julie? Oh. What about her?” Maqui asked saka pa tumingin sa kanya.

“I worked with her kanina.” he answered. He took a cookie and ate it.

“Really? Paano?”

“Remember nung nasa Cebu ako, someone offered me a modeling stint for a magazine?”

“Yeah. I remember that pero tinanggihan mo kasi nga dito sa Manila yun and you had a lot of things to do in Cebu pa.” sabi nito sabay tikim sa niluluto. “Sarap.” dagdag niya.

“Yes. Tapos kanina tinawagan nila ko uli. Sakto it’s in Taguig din so yun. I accepted it.”

“Eh anong connect ni Julie dun?” Maqui asked curiously. She and Julie have been neighbors for 5 years and naging magkaibigan na rin sila.

“Siya yung editor-in-chief nung magazine. And I think she owns the company din?”

“Ah. Yung Bachelor Magazine. Yeah kanya yun. And she’s got skills sa writing. Love her columns.” Maqui said.

“Yun. Yun lang naman.”

“You sure? Baka naman nagandahan ka sa kanya? She is pretty you know.” pang-aasar sa kanya ng pinsan. Natawa naman si Elmo. “Oh bakit? Hindi ba? Haha.”

“Well. Yeah she is pretty. Pero kasi alam mo naman yung before diba?” Elmo said.

“Moe, matagal na yun eh. And besides, pwede ka pa magbago. Tsaka wala naman na siya sa buhay mo so okay na diba?”

“But I don’t think I can change myself. Ito na ko eh.” he said. Maqui looked at him frome head to toe.

“Hmp. Pag nainlove ka ulit, tsaka mo malalaman kung ano ka ba talaga. Hahahaha.”

“Why are you laughing?” Elmo asked.

“Wala. Sabi kasi nila you go through identity crisis at the age of 12 to 16. Pero bakit ikaw? 24 na pero ganyan ka pa? Hahahaha.”

“Shut up, Maqui!” he cried pero mas lalo lang tumawa ang pinsan.

“Hahaha. I’m sorry. I just can’t help but wonder why.” she said.

“Hmp! Ewan ko sayo. Diyan ka na nga. Magbibihis ako.” sabi niya sabay akyat sa kwarto.

“Hahahaha. Hey come back down. Dinner will be ready in 5 minutes!” Maqui yelled.

“Jules, ito na yung draft for the cover.” Carl, her layout director, said habang inaabot ang sample ng magazine cover.

“Hmmm. Looks okay naman. Pero try to put a little more gold dun sa name ng magazine. Then emboss it. Special edition natin to so dapat maganda right?” she said. Napangiti naman si Carl.

“Yes. Sabagay. We have to make this big diba? It’s our 3rd anniversary pa naman. Sige I’ll work on it.” sabi nito.

“Thanks Carl!” she said. “Mich?” tawag niya sa secretary niya.

“Naprint na ba ni Hale yung pictures?” tanong niya rito.

“Yes. Ito oh.” sabay abot ng envelope kay Julie. “Check mo daw if it’s okay na or if it needs editing pa.”

“Alright. Sabihan ko siya later. Asan ba siya?”

“Nasa cubicle niya. He’s working on the other model’s pictures pa eh.”

“Okay. Si Sef nasan?” tanong niya.

“Yes my ever dearest bestfriend? What can my beautiful being do to you?” sabi nito pagkapasok sa opisina ng kaibigan.

“Yung interview mo. Have you started writing about it?” she asked.

“Oh yes. Pero wit pa siya finish friend. Pasa ko sayo later na lang. Wag mo ko pinepressure baka jombagin kita!” natawa naman si Julie at Mich. “And you Michelle Dimaculangan, wag ka laugh nang laugh diyan. Baka tirisin kita over there.” mataray na sabi nito.

“Grabe ka naman, Sef. Haha.” sagot ni Mich.

“Sige na Mich. Bumalik ka na sa desk mo.”

“Okay po.” lumabas na siya sa office ni Julie.

“At ikaw John Paul Joseph Cadayona, umiral nanaman kabaklaan mo ha. Tapusin mo na yung column mo so that I can read it.”

“Hmp! Ito na po madam.” at saka na ito pumasok sa opisina niya.

Abala si Elmo sa paggawa ng bagong design niya sa opisina when his phone rang.

“Yes hello?” he answered the call.

“Arch. Magalona, are you available today? We have a problem lang po sa site.” the guy from the other line said.

“Oh. Osige I’ll come over.”

“Thank you po sir.” He drove to Taguig para icheck ang problema.

“Sir. Buti nakarating kayo agad.”

“Ano ho bang problema, Sir Rick?” he asked the foreman.

“Eh sir kasi yung may-ari gusto po ipatibag yung part na to.” sabi nito sabay turo sa isang parte ng building.

“Bakit daw?” pagtataka ni Elmo. “Eh diba yan yung nasa plano? Pinakita naman natin sa kanya yan before we started the construction ah.” naiinis na siya dahil nakakailang revisions na sila ng plano pero parang ang hirap makuntento ng may-ari.

“Hindi daw po iyan yung nasa plano sir.” sagot ng foreman.

“Anong hindi?! Yan yun eh! Tawagan mo si Mrs. Calderon and tell her to go here immediately.” utos niya.

After about an hour ay dumating ang client niya.

“Mrs. Calderon ano pong problema sa plano?” he asked.

“I want this wall out.” the old lady said.

“Pero ma'am we can’t take it out kasi po if titibagin natin to, most likely, your building will collapse. And besides hindi naman po ito makikita once it’s finish.” Elmo said.

“Hindi kasi ganyan ang nasa plano.” reklamo pa ng matanda.

“Ma'am iba po talaga ang floor plan sa actual construction. Kasi po the floor plan is the top view of the whole contruction. And what you’re looking at is the perspective already. Look.” Elmo showed her the interior perspective of the building while he explains everything.

“Jules?” Mich called her.

Abala si Julie sa paggawa ng editor’s note for the next issue of their magazine. Next week na kasi ang launch nito and everybody’s busy making it their best issue.

“Yes?” sabi niya as she looked up from her computer.

“You have a visitor.” sabi ng secretary niya.

“Sige papasukin mo.” she told her.

Julie looked at her and her eyes grew wide when she recognized who her visitor was.

“Oh my goodness. Janine!!” she squealed as she stood up and hugged her.

“Hey there, Julie!” bati sa kanya nito.

“How’ve you been? Namiss kita!” sabi niya.

“I’m good. Ikaw? Ang tagal na natin di nagkikita.”

“I’m doing great din naman. Anyway. How’s your career in New York? Buti nakauwi ka?”

“Well I had a month vacation kaya I decided to go home muna. It was great. Sobrang saya dun and grabe. Dream come true!” kinikilig na sabi nito.

“Aww. I’m so happy for you Janine. Lovelife? Musta?” tanong naman ni Julie. Natawa si Janine at saka pa ito umiling. “Single?”

“Akala ko may boyfriend ka? When we did your shoot last January sabi mo you’re in love. What happened?” pagtataka ni Julie.

Janine has always been a friend to her ever since they shot her for the Bachelor Magazine’s counterpart.

“Well. Naging kami after that. Pero we only lasted for 6 months. We broke up last July.” sabi nito.

“Bakit?” Julie asked.

“Wala eh. Ganun talaga siguro. Maybe we’re not just meant to be together.” sagot nito.

“Aww. Sorry to hear that Janine.”

“It’s okay. I’ve moved on naman na eh.” and she smiled.

“Good for you.” Julie said. “Oo nga pala. You wanna attend our 3rd year anniversary? We’ll be launching a new issue and if you want you can be our guest of honor. Since your cover issue has the most number of sales this year.” Julie said. Janine paused and thought about it then she smiled.

“Sure! I’d be happy to go.”

It’s the launch of his cover issue. Naeexcite siya na kinakabahan. Excited because it’s the first time na cover siya ng isang magazine and nervous because of something he can’t pinpoint at.

“Hoy. Wag ka nga kabahan diyan. Tignan mo oh. This is it!! Cover ka na ng magazine pinsan!” Maqui told him.

I can feel something na hindi magandang mangyayari today.”

“Tss. Will you relax? Ang nega mo talaga lagi. Chill okay?” she said. Maqui ruffled his hair at saka pa siya mahinang sinuntok sa braso.

“Maq!” paglingon nila ay si Julie. She was wearing a long gold dress that hugs her body and shows just the right curves. Her hair was curled at nakalugay. And she has just the right amount of make-up.

“Julie!” Maqui hugged her at saka pa nagbeso. “Wow. Looking good ha? Goddess na goddess ang peg ah.” sabi nito.

“Haha. Of course. Anniversary ng Bachelor and kailangan kong maging maganda.” natatawang sagot nito. “Ikaw din ha. You look pretty!” bati niya pa kay Maqui.

“Hi, Elmo!” bati nito.

“Are you excited?” Julie asked him.

“Excited and nervous. Haha.” he laughed.

“Haha. That’s normal. Pero don’t worry. We got your back.” sabi ni Julie sa kanya. “Uhm. Maq, Elmo excuse lang ha. I’ll just talk to the other guests.” at umalis na nga si Julie sa kinauupuan nila.

The party is great. Magaganda ang music na pinapatugtog and everyone seems to be enjoying. Elmo and Maqui were busy drinking and talking nang bigla siyang sikuhin ng pinsan.

“What?” he asked. Ngumuso ito sa gawi ng pinto and when he followed her gaze ay napalunok siya. Bigla nanamang bumalik ang kaba niya and he couldn’t breathe properly. “Bakit siya andito? Bakit sa lahat ng lugar, dito pa ulit?” he thought.

“Anong gagawin mo?” Maqui asked.

“I-I don’t know.”

“Tsk. Kalma lang. Kalma. Di ka mapapansin niyan.”

“Maq, I’m sure mapapansin niya ko. I’ll be introduced in a short while and my pictures will be flashed on the screen at aakyat ako sa stage.” he said.

“Shit! Tsk. Act normal Elmo. Wag mo ipahalatang kinakabahan ka because of her presence.”

They tried to enjoy the rest of the night pero halata pa rin sa kanya na hindi niya gusto ang nangyayari. Maya-maya pa ay umakyat na sa stage si Julie with microphone in hand.

“Alright ladies and gentlmen. We are proud to present the new cover of Bachelor Magazine. Give it up for Mr. Elmo Magalona!” pagkarinig niya nun ay saktong tinutok sa kanya ang spotlight. “Elmo? Please come up the stage.”

He looked amazing in the shot chosen at mukhang maganda ang write-up about him pero he just can’t focus on that. Dahil alam niya that by this time, she knows he’s here.

“Also! We have a special guest to say a short message para sa anniversary natin. Our January cover girl of Bachelorette, Ms. Janine Gutierrez!” nagpalakpakan ang lahat at nakita ni Elmo ang pag-akyat ni Janine sa stage. Julie handed her the mic and she smiled before she spoke.

“Good evening everyone. I’m just so happy to be a part of Julie’s magazine covers and through the past months that we’ve been friends, she never failed to amaze me with every issue you guys release. Jules, I’m so proud of you because you reached the 3rd year mark of your dream.” she said. Then napatingin ito sa kanya. “And I wanna welcome you Mr. Elmo Magalona for being a part of this amazing issue.” she continued.

“Whatever you’re thinking, don’t do it.” he whispered.

“But I have an announcement to make. Listen very well Elmo. This guy right here is…”

“Don’t think about it Janine.” he said. Kabadong-kabado na siya sa maaaring sabihin nito. Janine smiled at him tsaka muling nagsalita.

“Is a great man. Congrats to your cover Bachelor Magazine! Cheers!”
