Singer and 'Glee' actor comes out as transgender and announces his name
Jake Zyrus thanks fans for "love and respect"

The singer, actor and YouTuber whose musical career includes playing Sunshine Corazon on Glee has come out about his transgender identity and name.

Back in 2014, about a year after publicly coming out as a lesbian, Jake Zyrus told Oprah that he had long struggled with his gender identity. He told her that his soul was male, but that he would not transition to be a “male-male.” This week, though, he announced his new name and online presence as Jake.

On Sunday, the Filipino star announced that he will now go by the name Jake Zyrus, a new moniker that reflects his male gender identity.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the love and respect,” Zyrus captioned an Instagram post that simply bore the words “thank you.” “I love you back and I’m sending peace to everyone.”

The next day, Zyrus ventured further into the social media realm using his new name, tentatively tweeting, “My first tweet as Jake. Overwhelmed. Saw all your love comments and I’m so happy. Finally. I love you, everyone and see you soon.” As an added note, he wrote in a subsequent tweet, “I won’t let anyone ruin this moment. I won’t let anyone ruin my happiness. Thank you to all the beautiful write ups about me.”

Congratulations, Jake! So happy for you.

A blond-haired, blue-eyed actor named Chris is playing an American named Steve, who’s fighting in a world war. Along the way, he meets a scary foreign brunette woman and takes an unlikely band of friends of different nationalities through an event, and goes up against a couple of Germans, one large and deranged, one smaller and a scientist. Steve, at some point, hijacks a plane and destroys it (and a weapon) for the greater good. Someone is looking back at it from the future, and will eventually team up with a millionaire with daddy issues and cool toys. There’s also a shield involved.

Am I talking about Captain America: The First Avenger, or Wonder Woman?

You know which two actors really need to meet and share similar stories about their totally gay characters that were forced into a straight relationship for whatever reason while having this big ass crush on the male protagonist, and how much they tried to convince the writers to at least let their characters kiss the male protagonist but nothing ever came out of it?

Creator of #OscarsSoWhite isn’t taking credit for this year’s historic wins

  • For an awards ceremony that’s been rightfully derided in recent years for refusing to acknowledge the work of artists of color, Sunday night’s show was an important step in the right direction.
  • But April Reign, the woman who coined the phrase #OscarsSoWhite, the hashtag that encapsulated that criticism, isn’t taking all the credit.
  • She’s underscoring an important point. #OscarsSoWhite highlighted an enduring problem in Hollywood, namely that filmmakers and actors of color weren’t recognized for their achievements by the industry at large.
  • That fed into a lack of representation that has real consequences, ranging from young kids’ self-esteem to policy making
  • But at its very core, the goal of diversifying representation in Hollywood is to allow the work of artists of color to be judged on the same platform as white people’s art.
  • In the case of Moonlight’s wins, it shows that the stories of black boys are important and worthy of being told. And in this political climate, that’s more important than ever. Read more (2/27/17 9:13 AM)
