Sister Act, Hocus Pocus, Rat Race, The Kathy and Mo Show… all have one thing in common, Kathy Najimy. Kathy Najimy; Film/ TV Actress, Writer, Improv genius, Women & GLBT Activist; someone who possesses talent with such a wide range doesn’t go unnoticed. My discovery of Kathy came when I was about 6 years old, a movie came out… a movie that (for the sake of dramatics) changed my life; HOCUS POCUS. There really is no need to go into a summary of this movie, as it could be one of the ‘holiday staple movies’ of gay culture. So when this movie came out I had no actual comprehension of what the movie was about, I just knew witches, flying and amazing capes. At 6 years old, I was sold. Even at this age, I never wanted to be like everyone else; Bette Midlers character was the fan favorite, but I was drawn to Mary Sanderson (enter stage right: Kathy Najimy). From her facial expressions to her voice, I picked up and studied her from top to bottom. As I got older, I discovered Sister Act, The Kathy and Mo Show, King of the Hill and Rat Race… and just thought this woman was ‘the shit’.
It is so inspiring to find someone who is a master of their craft, passionate about what they believe in, speak out for whats right and funny as hell. I hope to let these qualities reflect in myself and my work in the future.
My word to describe Kathy; ADMERABLE
