Violet Eyes [My Gold Mask]

You were the one to break me in
I’ll never be the same girl I once had been
I smell the taste of your pale skin
I rue the day I met you, but love the sin

My Gold Mask - Your Coo Ka Choo - LIVE 4/22/10

I started listening to My Gold Mask sometime early last year but didn’t know much about them at all. Today they started following me via Twitter out of the blue so I decided to look into who they are a little. It floored me that there are only two people. Good song.

Chicago’s My Gold Mask has been hailed for their innovative haunting sound that brings dark and murky sentiment into the realm of pop. But on their new album, Anxious Utopia, the “goth synth pop” trio has let beams of light seem into their usual dark sonic realm. This time the music is a little brighter and a little more danceable. Lyrically, too, the brooding themes of singer Gretta’s writing are supplemented with gleams of hope and defiance.

Anxious Utopia album release show takes place Saturday, March 5th at Lincoln Hall

Live From Studio 10 is Vocalo’s live performance show and podcast that features emerging bands and music artists from Chicago and beyond. Hosted by Jesse Menendez, produced by Fyodor Sakhnovski, and this episode was engineered by Collin Ashmead-Bobbitt. Subscribe to the podcast here:

MY GOLD MASK performs “YOUR COO KA CHOO” at Public Assembly in Brooklyn April 6th 2011

My Gold Mask is Chicago based Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo.  Yes, Rochelle’s soaring vocals have been said to echo the likes of early Karen O, Blondie, or Pat Benatar- but it’s My Gold Mask’s stage presence that transcend comparison.  MGM is honing in on their own thing, and a potent mixture of high rock drama, energetic lyrics and deconstructed instrumentation make them a unique live act that must be experienced first hand.  They are definitely a band to keep an eye out for, and who doesn’t love a lady drummer that can really wail?
