sometimes i think about the early days of ron and hermione’s marriage, after the honeymoon period but before hugo and rose. i just can’t imagine that that period would have been particularly pretty, ron realizing that hermione isn’t the kind of person who is going to take care of him and coddle him the way that his mum did. hermione, while she has deep respect for everything everything molly weasley has ever done and does, isn’t particularly inclined to busy herself with housework and cooking, and hermione is a passable cook but ron misses his mum’s cooking, you know? he misses the fact that his laundry and stuff was always just clean and folded for him. and hermione, her mind is academic. she wants to achieve great things by helping others who can’t help themselves. molly was the master of her home, that’s where she drew her power. but that’s just not the case for hermione.

so i wonder if maybe a couple years into their marriage hermione momentarily regretted her choice in marrying ron, someone who wanted a home like the one he grew up in, who wanted kids down the line, who, despite the fact that he’s known hermione as a badass independent witch who gets him out of trouble almost all the time, is not his mother and never will be. i would think that the first years after their marriage was a bit of a learning curve for him.

and i imagine that hermione was a bit reticent to start a family. she, after all, was an only child, and as much as she had probably sometimes wished for the companionship of a sibling, seems to have gotten on quite well without the distraction of one (or several). but ron probably couldn’t imagine a childhood without siblings. it was probably a point of contention, something they should have probably talked about before getting married, but i bet they probably didn’t.

but eventually rose is born, and with hermione nothing happens by accident. rose was planned, the pregnancy probably micromanaged, if she could, hermione probably would have been her own midwife.

so that means at some point ron and hermione probably have a conversation that begins with ron saying something careless and flippant and a little insulting, and hermione says something along the lines of ‘my uterus, my rules’ and then they kind of have it out, hermione telling him she’s not molly, and that she neither has the time nor the inclination to birth and raise seven kids, unless he can find a potion that will grow him a uterus so he can gestate their children.

but ron, instead of saying something mean like he would have when he was younger, probably just says something that’s unintentionally but incredibly sweet. he just wants to be a dad, but more importantly, he says, is that he thinks she’d be a great mum, and that he only wants kids if she’ll be their mother. and that’s when the tide turns in ron’s favor.

but hermoine still caps the kid count at two.
