my program is not working like i want it to be

Back to School/Uni Tips!

I’m headed into my 3rd year of uni, so I thought I’d make a post sharing my tips on how to do well in school, not burn out, and keep your mental health relatively stable.

1. Snacks - seriously, don’t leave home without at least 2 substantial snacks in your bag. If you’re go-go-going all day and suddenly your sitting in a lecture about to crash cause you haven’t eaten anything all day, you’re gonna want snacks. Some suggestions: Cashews (they’re not super loud/crunchy, so they’re perfect for lecture snackin’), a granola bar, an apple, cherry tomatoes, trail mix.

2. Don’t buy the textbook before you go to your first class - I’ve worked at a university bookstore for 2 years, and every year, people end up buying 700$ worth of first year text books, and then they don’t even use them. Wait. and then wait some more. If there are required readings, then get the textbook, if your prof says there will be questions from the textbook on the exam, then get the textbook, but trust me, for 90% of first year classes (and a lot of other ones) you don’t need the textbook. SAVE YOUR WALLETS

3. Take notes efficiently - honestly the best way to take notes, is type up the lecture notes that are provided, BEFOREHAND, and then during lecture, fill in the blanks/add information/take down any important things your prof is saying as you go through the lecture on your laptop in a different color. This way you’re much less likely to miss any important information, you won’t be confused about what to take down, and you won’t fall into the trap of taking down notes that are already being provided to you. After class, or while making study notes, copy these notes out by hand to remember what you learned.

4. Keep it simple - pretty notes are GREAT if you have the time, but once you get to upper level uni, and you have 100 slides of notes to turn into study notes, you will not have the time to make your notes look aesthetically pleasing. Just get the info down so you can focus on learning it.

5. Have a designated study space - i did all of my highschool homework and studying in my bed, and 90% of the time, I ended up falling asleep. My bed wasn’t going to cut it for uni, so I got a cheap ikea desk, and it’s made me so much more organized and productive.

6. Take as much ‘you time’ as possible - take a bath. light candles. binge watch a tv show. veg out with a book for 4 hours if you have the time. do your makeup super special one day. get yourself that venti pumpkin spice latte with extra whip whenever you feel like it. Uni is a shitty time I’m not gonna lie. It’s stressful as f*ck, and whenever you can spare a couple hours or a couple dollars to TREAT YO SELF, do it.

7.  If you have anxiety, CUT THE COFFEE. caffeine is a huge trigger for anxiety. Caffeine takes away from your sleep, messes with your adrenalin systems, and can make you super paranoid and anxious all the time.

8. If you think your in the wrong major, change it - I started in geology, and I HATED IT. Now I’m in psych and I love it. It is never too late for a change of program. If you think you’re doing something you don’t wanna do, or your not enjoying it, don’t do it.

9. For mornings you have to be ready and out the door, or if you’re a person who always runs late, have a getting-ready routine and get it down pat. Have a mental list of things you need to do, and things you need to remember, and find out how much time it takes you. Get up at 8am, shower, wash face/brush teeth, get dressed, do makeup, pack bag, remember keys, wallet, laptop, notebook, pen and train pass, have breakfast, put on shoes, leave by 9am.

10. Utilize your time in transit. - finish a reading, go over flashcards, read study notes, listen to an album you’ve been meaning to listen to, read a book, read some fanfic, idk but don’t just sit there unless just sitting there is what you need.

11. Find a hobby or passion that is separate from your school/uni life. Whether its playing sports, or running, reading, collecting plants, making scrapbooks, curating a refined taste in tea, having baths, writing in a journal, find something that if you’re bored with watching shows or studying, you can go do it, and enjoy it, and get your mind off all the other shit that’s going on in your life for awhile.

university tips

*from someone that survived her own first year of university

  • university is SO different from high school; a brilliant student in high school can be just a mediocre university student, and this is simply how it is when people from all over the country come together in a class.
  • so it is okay to stress, but only if afterwards you’re just trying your best! it doesn’t matter how much you already know (though it helps), but how willing you are to learn! so, really, if you want to be there, you can make it!
  • make sure you eat properly; after a while, your body will start feeling gross and it’ll eventually show in your capacity to do your work. go out, buy that extra meat, extra salads, extra fruits, at least every once in a while. it’s not luxury, it’s a need
  • go the extra mile. no matter how optional a task may be or how tongue-tied you feel on a particular day, put yourself out there. write that essay, do that projects, speak about your ideas. your teachers really appreciate it when they ask for interractions from students and they provide, and it’s nice to have your teacher know you by face and by actions. it might prove useful when they’re grading you during the finals as well.
  • go to all (most) of your classes, no matter how optional the attendace is or how little you understand on the moment. in the long run, it will matter, and it’s super helpful to complete all your materials with the extra knowledge you got from the class. and no one and nothing will truly replace a teacher’s explanation.
  • try to make friends with those around you; most are probably just as lost and lonely as you are and it’s good to have people around you who can motivate you when you’re done or with whom to simply share the struggles of getting an education. sure, not everyone will like you, but those that will, make sure they can stick.
  • get involved in all the extra programmes that you’re interested in! you’re young and a student once! these opportunities are mostly a once in your lifetime thing! get out there and try everything: go to that book club, get your ass for the cinephile gathering, sign up for exchange programs, help out your teachers with their projects, do volunteer work! whatever floats your boat, but just do it!
  • also keep your eyes wide open to catch all the interesting lectures happening in your school. check those posters, check those subjects, check those dates and go. most of the times, you’ll leave knowing much more and having something to think on.
  • do your reading and assignments ahead of time! you don’t want it to be 2 dayss before your first exam, and you still have to finish essays and books.
  • the library really is your best friend! either as a study place or alternative to spending all your money on the source materials for your homework.
  • tidy up at least once a week; as school materials will start pile up, it will be harder and harder to find anything and you’ll only just end up frustrated
  • no one knows you better than you do, so make sure to take only the amount of work you know you can do. it’s okay if you want to keep your first year as free as you can, so you have time to acommodate, and just as okay it is to try all the available classes if you can.
  • keep your facebook name your real one so people can find you. make sure you’re in every possible group within the first week of university, so you know what’s going on. use said facebook groups to ask about teachers and classes, or find offers on used textbooks that are much cheaper than if you would have bought them yourself.
  • talk with the upperclassmen if you have questions, or simply for tips! really, it tickles our ego to have people actually interested in the experiences we have to share and most of us are more than happy to clear any misunderstandings or help you guys get a classroom right.
  • carry pills and proteine bars with you, especially if you spend a long time away from home! you never know when pain or hunger hits you, and it is better to be prepared than sorry.
  • it became a running joke at this point, i know, but right during the exam period you’ll want to do everything you haven’t done ever. so make sure you nurture your hobbies as well as your studies, and hopefully your interests are not too time consuming or at least require frequent/long breaks.
  • literally no one cares about how you look; so wear that make-up and nice clothes if you feel up for it, but if you don’t, that’s fine as well.
  • it will be done in the blink of an eye. so be true to yourself and your wishes, enjoy what you’re studying and, remember, you can do it!

This is something I hope all of my followers and the entire studyblr community will read…

Last year was the hardest year of my life and I did not even notice it until I was out of it. To give a little background, I was 19, and becoming a college senior. I completed my bachelor’s degree with a double major, summa cum laude. I worked two jobs, one retail, one as a tour guide, five days a week, and took seven classes in the fall, and eight in the spring, and six in the summer. By March I had lost 16 pounds, was not eating, not sleeping, and drinking four or more cups of coffee a day. I had a boyfriend, friends, a roommate, I was president of a club, vice president of another, and working as vice president of one club’s international leadership program as one of five student board members across sixty-three countries. I studied for my LSAT, took the exam, and applied to law school. And in August, I will be the youngest person in my law school.

I pushed myself harder and further than I ever imagined, and though I sometimes (often) felt like it, I never cracked, gave up, or even collapsed. I did not always take care of myself, physically, mentally, or emotionally though, and I failed myself there, but I was so driven, so determined, that none of that mattered to me at that moment. I do not regret that or any of the choices I have made, but I pressured myself more than anyone ever has, and more than I ever have. I accomplished unbelievable things, but at an insane cost - my health.

Often in this community I receive messages, and see posts, encouraging you to never give up, and to always push yourself to get that A, pass that test, graduate, or to overcome whatever academic or otherwise challenges you are facing. Almost daily I receive messages asking how I do it. “How did you graduate at 20?”, “How do you keep up with all of your commitments?”, and even, “You are so amazing, I could never do it like you do”. But I am here to tell you well, it is not pretty. I went days without eating a meal at times. Days without washing my hair, of wearing the same torn leggings and a hoodie because a grade meant more to me than I meant to myself. I got walking pneumonia at the end of the spring term because I had pushed myself too hard and spent weeks telling myself I could not afford to be sick today, tomorrow, or the next day. I wore myself down so much that I had a doctor literally tell me that now at 20 years old, if I do not tone down the stress and pressure I subject myself to, that I could give myself a stroke. A stroke, 20 years old!

Being a perfectionist, and being so overwhelmingly addicted to my studies, is not glamorous.

I am making this post not to brag about my accomplishments, but because I receive messages daily idolizing me and what I have done. I want everyone to know that this is not easy. Having a dream is hard work, and I have been unfairly hard on myself. Just because you do not see someone’s cracks and scars, does not mean they are not there. I have worked hard, and have earned these things, but I have made sacrifices I would hate to see anyone else make.

In 10 days I move across the country to start law school, and I am terrified that I will allow myself to do this all over again. I am not afraid of the move, or of law school, but of myself and how I talk to myself and treat myself, and the amount of stress and pressure I am willing to apply to myself, without hesitation. In a month I have law school orientation, and have set up a meeting with one of the school’s onsite trauma therapists. I refuse to let myself be my own greatest roadblock. I have to learn to love myself. It is not fair to your body and mind to put grades above yourself. I now full heartedly believe that a grade is not worth your health. I will no longer break my back bending over backwards for an A+. I will no longer let myself go days without food and rest because I want this essay to be perfect, or my presentation to go as planned, second by second. I will allow myself to be happy, well rested, well fed, and healthy. I will love myself, and this is a promise I am making to myself and to all of you, and a promise I hope you all can make to yourselves as well.

I promise.

TLDR; Be dedicated, and determined to get what you want, but do not sacrifice your health, mental, physical, or emotional, for a grade, a diploma, a degree… You are worth so much more than a letter on a piece of paper, and it is okay to sometimes need to hear that. I know I did.

So I think I’ve seen people discuss this before–the idea that Viktor is Yuuri’s coach, as well as his boyfriend/fiance/husband/whatever you imagine their relationship becomes post-season 1. I’ve seen a lot of meta about how Yuuri has to disconnect the idea of Viktor-as-Idol from Viktor-as-Person (And I’ve even written some of that meta myself) but I can’t recall seeing a lot of meta about Yuuri having to separate Viktor-as-coach from Viktor-as-lover.

Coaches are in charge of you. There’s a power dynamic there that is hard to ignore, and Yuuri knows that Viktor would never take advantage of it. That’s not what this is about. But there is a somewhat natural human reflex, shall we say, to reacting negatively to someone saying No you’re doing this wrong or You need to do better

Of course Yuuri understands that this is what a coach does. The only reason Viktor is saying these things is because he wants Yuuri to improve. But it’s difficult all the same.

I think there are a lot of times, especially once Viktor retires for good and becomes Yuuri’s coach, and they’ve been together for awhile and Yuuri doesn’t have the constant swirling thought of He’s leaving soon to occupy his thoughts like he did that first summer in Hasetsu–there are a lot of times when Yuuri has to actually put effort into separating Viktor into two separate people–or at least two separate sets of motivations.

“That was the sloppiest Salchow I’ve ever seen,” Viktor says, and Yuuri has to grit his teeth and nod and do it again, and not react to it like he would if Viktor had just said something like Dinner was horrible because that’s not what’s going on. Viktor isn’t saying these things to hurt him, and moreover Viktor is not talking to him as his husband right now.

Sometimes, after particularly frustrating practice days where nothing seems to be going right and Viktor never seems happy, Yuuri has to hang back and put himself back into a mindset that’s safe for home–one that won’t make him bark at Viktor for putting the forks in the dishwasher the wrong way. Because it’s not the forks–when Yuuri says Why can’t you put the forks in the dishwasher the right way what is actually trying to come out of his mouth is You’re my husband and you keep telling me I’m doing bad and it hurts, and he knows he can’t say that, because Viktor is a good coach. He’s an amazing coach, but he comes from the Yakov Feltsman School of Brutal Honesty.

Yuuri knows that he wouldn’t feel nearly so torn up if it was Yakov telling him these things. But Viktor’s voice is the same one that laughs with him over dinner, and whispers to him in bed, and to hear that voice continually tell him he’s not quite good enough is difficult.

But then he gets home, and Coach Nikiforov has dropped away to be replaced by Vitya, Yuuri’s husband, who smiles at him when he walks in the door and says, “Welcome home, Kitten,” and Yuuri can’t help but melt into him.

“I think practice went really well today,” Viktor tells him over dinner. “Your Lutz is looking good. It’ll be an amazing program by the time we leave for Skate America.”

“You think so?” Yuuri murmurs, and what he wants to say is then why didn’t you say that at the rink, but he knows. He knows why.

And Viktor, his husband, looks up at him and beams and says, “Darling, you know I always think you’re amazing.”

And maybe, eventually, Viktor rolls over in bed and puts a hand on his hip and murmurs, “You know that everything I say in practice is meant to help you improve, right? And that I’m never trying to insult you, or hurt your feelings? I love you just as much as your coach as I do as your husband.”

“I know,” Yuuri whispers, and kisses him.

Eventually, Yuuri realizes that it’s a good thing that he’s compartmentalized Viktor like this. Sometimes Viktor annoys him to the point that he can barely see straight, and sometimes he and Viktor get into pretty heated arguments in the middle of the rink, but it’s nothing that a coach and student wouldn’t fight over. They don’t fight about the laundry at work, and they don’t fight about work while they’re doing the laundry. In the end, it helps Yuuri to keep a professional air about him, which is necessary when working with the love of your life day in and day out.

(And if once or twice, Yuuri and Viktor have had something that could be called hate sex in the locker rooms after a particularly bad practice? Well. Gentlemen don’t kiss and tell.)

NHL Bitty Part XIV - BEYONCÉ

Post-Wedding: Eric’s a little famous, but he’s not used to taking advantage of that status. Good thing he’s surrounded himself with people who don’t have the same hang-ups.

Beyoncé’s new tour dates are announced and not only is she playing Starbucks Arena, she’s playing in Seattle during a lull between a stretch of home games.

“I didn’t realize you were so into Beyoncé, Bittle. Isn’t that a little bit stereotypical?”

Eric doesn’t have time for Boomer’s casual homophobia, pre-sale tickets go on sale in three minutes and for once this miserable season, he’d like to get something he actually wants.

“I don’t know if anyone has told you, Booms, but I’m pretty fucking gay. And you know what else is a stereotype: sucking big, thick, hard –”

Boomer raises his hands and backs away from Eric’s table. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry.”

Eric waves the d-man off while Carter slides out the chair beside Eric and drops his take-out box on the table, careful not to jostle the laptop.

“He’s getting better.”

“He’s getting his stall plastered with hardcore vintage porn is what he’s getting,” Eric mutters. “Swear to the Lord, you’d think I was a walking identity crisis –”

Two minutes. His card info is pre-loaded. Carter is chomping away on something that smells like curry. Eric’s blood is vibrating under his skin like he’s in overtime. He’s ready.

“Wait, why are you buying them yourself? I’m sure JoAnn can get some from the front office for us.”

Eric stares at the screen. 1:27. He doesn’t want to bother the team’s publicist over something like this. He’s an adult. He needed help with Hamilton tickets, he doesn’t need help for Beyoncé. He knows Beyoncé.

Maybe not literally, but still.

“Dude, let me call her. Just in case.”

“Leave her alone. She’s done enough for us this season.”

0:18

“Maybe we should –”

“Shhhhhhhh!”

The waiting room clicks over and he’s in. Easy as pie. He selects his seats, nabs the VIP package, gets to the checkout screen, and…

And…

“What the hell…?”

 An error message pops up.

“No, no, no, no,” Eric clicks the screen, and when the page refreshes there’s nothing there. No seats. No VIP meet and greet. Nothing. A happy little banner pops up that reads ‘Thank you for participating in Citi Bank’s Presale –’

Eric’s stomach drops. “Are you kidding me!? It’s been thirty seconds!”

“It’s bots, man,” Bay shouts from across the room. “Those ticket resellers program these computers to –”

“I don’t give a good god damn if it’s a robot! I was right there! They were mine!” He drops his head to the table and whines. “I can afford them on the secondary market, it’s just the principle of the matter.”

“I’m so sorry, man,” Carter runs a sympathetic hand over his back. “Can I call JoAnn now?”

Eric shakes his head, content to wallow in his own sadness. “Everything I touch turns to death,” he moans.

“That sounds like a yes.”

Eric’s phone starts vibrating beside his head – the tap-tap-tap pulse he’s set for Jack – but before he can answer Carter’s tapped the call button for him.

“Hey, Zimmermann. You’re on speaker phone, your husband’s in a state.”

“Carter, um, thanks? Bits, you okay? Did you get your tickets?”

“…no,” Eric sighs, lifting his head to stare blearily at his phone. “The bots ruined me, Jack. I’m dead.”

“Your man is too proud to use his contacts, Zimms,” Carter snickers and elbows Eric in the side.

“That’s unfortunate,” Jack consoles, but Eric can hear something else in his voice. Something distinctly amused.

“Jack, I swear to god if you make me wait any longer –”

“I have two VIP passes sitting on my desk at home right now. I talked to my agent about it weeks ago. I wanted it to be a surprise.”

Eric’s mouth goes dry and Carter shakes his shoulders roughly in excitement. He can’t make his voice work.

Carter leans in close, whispering, “Bittle, you crying?”

“Bits? Bud? You there?”

“No,” Eric breathes, composing himself, “I’m just, really happy I married my husband, and I get to meet Beyoncé.”

There’s silence across the line, then, “Bits, I know those things aren’t in order, and that’s okay. I love you, too.”

How I Got Into Animation

I feel like sharing my journey in animation especially in times like these when job opportunities come by and I get lots of messages about it. Here it goes (it’s a bit long):
I got into TV animation in Manila without any art degree in 1990 as an inbetweener trainee for Hannah Barbera. It was a job application I waited for almost a year just to get into the program. When I first sent an overseas application to Disney, Dreamworks, and Warner Brothers in 1994, I was already supervising the layout dept for Marvel TV Production in Manila and just started a family. With a heart focused on getting into feature animation, the portfolio guidelines the studios sent me gave me a reality check - my skills were not there yet. So I decided I’ll keep moving towards the goal and sharpen my skills to their standard. After migrating to the US in ‘96 through a small game studio, the first thing I did was take a summer program at Associates in Art under a couple of Disney artists. I remember depriving myself of sleep for 13 weeks while building a new portfolio. After the program, I brought my portfolios to the same studios. DW wasn’t sure and wanted to give me a test. WB flatly told me I don’t have it. Disney, on the other hand, immediately hired me to work as full time key layout artist on Mulan. And that was the start of another life journey.
I always tell my students to keep the 4 P’s going in them: 1. Passion - keep it burning and having a growth mindset to never stop learning to do something new; 2. Practice - practice, practice, and tons of practice; 3. Perseverance - takes an act of will to keep pressing on; and lastly, 4. Prayers - we need lots of it. At any point, don’t ever, ever think that you’ve arrived. All the best to all who are on the same creative journey.

Hey there! I really like you're art! My question is whether you have always been doing it digitally and what do you use in order to make digital art. Also if I were to start doing digital art what should I use? Love you!~

Hi!  I’ve been doing digital art since late 2015 (see the pic below), but I’ve been studying traditionally for about 3-4 years now.  I use Photoshop CC as well as a Wacom tablet (Intuos Pen Small, about 8″x7″).

I’d recommend that combo if you’re starting out (alternatively, substitute some free drawing program for photoshop if you want to)- mainly because they’re what I used when I started out and they’ve worked well enough that I continue to use them,

Also, from your questions, I suspect that you’re just getting into digital art.  Few things to note: it’s tricky to draw on tablets when you start out.  It’s normal if your coordination is messy even for 1-3 months after you get your tablet.  Here is an old ask with some advice for beginner digital artists; I think a lot of my year-old advice (almost to the day, jeez) still holds up.

On the Coastal Tip of Jamaica, actress Candice Patton stands barefoot in a sheer yellow dress before settling turquoise waters. Her arms sway back and forth as the Caribbean air billows through the thigh-high slit. She gives the camera a small smile as the sun radiates off her skin and the tide tiptoes towards the shore. The Instagram boomerang I’m glancing at has now been viewed over 200,000 times by her 1.2 million-user following.

It’s mid-June; a median between two milestones in Candice’s life - two weeks before her 29th birthday, and two weeks after the Season 3 finale of The Flash aired in homes nationwide. The superhero fiction show, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, stars Candice as Iris West, opposite Grant Gustin as the titular hero, Barry Allen. In the last three years, The Flash has garnered over 15 awards, with Candice herself most recently winning a Saturn Award for “Best Supporting Actress on Television”. It makes sense that CBS Watch! Magazine would send her over to the Caribbean for a photoshoot.

The CW star calls me from her residence in Los Angeles on a Friday afternoon, after her trip in Jamaica. I expect her to sound exhausted from her jet setting, but she’s not. To my astoundment, there’s a lot on her mind. I come to realize that, unlike Iris West, Candice Patton is equipped with a power of her own.

there’s been some discourse on twitter about whether or not you have to use traditional media for inktober (lmao..)

im not gonna talk too much about it bc its not even worth my time and energy,

but with regards to the “working in a permanent medium like ink forces you to commit to your lines & helps prevent bad habits like relying on spamming ctrl+z”

this is actually true, but it doesnt mean you can’t do the same thing digitally.

There’s two things you can do, first of all you can edit your shortcuts and remove ctrl+z etc. so you have no undo shortcuts.

Second thing you can do is disable the history, most all art programs will let you manually set the history count (how many times you can undo) to at least 1 in the program preferences, which will prevent you relying on undo.

I’d also encourage you to avoid using the eraser tool, challenge yourself to commit to the lines you make and you’ll grow more confident with your art!

& If you find yourself struggling a lot to get the lines you want, give these exercises a go to improve your control:

most importantly, have fun! Inktober should be a time of self improvement, how you approach this is up to you :^)

[Reader’s POV]

Comfort. That is all you’re feeling right now. It was one of your favorite feelings. Sadly you couldn’t stay in bed forever which you wished that it was possible. It was unlikely due to the responsibilities you have. This one morning you don’t want to move at all. Your body ached and was sore from training and a night with Peter.

“baby girl, you have to get up..” Peter’s voice making you stir in your peaceful slumber.Your body being shaken lightly.

“Five more minutes…” I mumbled snuggling against the warmth he body produced. He felt so warm and cozy. The warmth lulling you back to sleep. You gladly welcomed sleep till Peter opens his mouth again.

“You have been saying that every time I try and wake you up” his chest moves as he laughs.

“shhhh, just stay with me and we can make up a practice session later.. Please Peter, I’ll make it up to you if you stay with me all day today..”  Your leg moving up to his waist pulling him closer. A whimper slips out as you feel how hard he is. You look up to see his eyes a shade darker. His eyes gazing at your lips, his tongue darting out quickly. His lips crash down onto yours in a passionate kiss pulling your body against his.

“darling, fuck” he groans gripping onto your ass tighter. You slowly push your hips again creating a needy friction. The tight grip he had on you made you moan in his ear.

“P-Peter “ you gasp out as his lips leave a path down your neck. The feeling making your eyes flutter shut. You straddle him feeling his cock press against your clothed core. A whimper escaped your lips as you pressed your hips against his. The rocking motion earns you a slap to your ass. His hand coming down against your ass each time you moved your hips.

“god your ass is so red” he moans gripping your tingling cheek in his hand. His hot breath fans across your neck making you shiver. You begin sucking on the base of his neck. A moan slips from Peter’s lips as you turn his skin red.

“You’re so sinful it could bring a holy man to his knees… and you darling always bring me to mine” He tears your panties off causing you to frown.

Stupid Spider strength..

“Peterrrr those were my favorite” I pout rolling us over and pushing him off of the bed. A thud signalling he fell onto the floor. His head pops up from the edge of your bed making you laugh. His curls messy making him look cute and sexy.

“I’ll buy you new ones babe” he laughs standing up walking away. Sitting up on my elbows I look at him heading to the door. Is he seriously going to leave you here?

“You’re just going to wake me up, tease me then leave?” My voice coming out flustered. He closes the door locking it ,seeing that made your eyebrow raise. A smirk appears on his lips as he slips off his sweat pants. His Calvin Kleins showing a print of how hard he really was.

“Karen turn on the Don’t Bother Us Program, then you can turn back on when I say so” Peter speaks to the ceiling.

Your sleeping quarters at the Avengers HQ was styled like an apartment so you and Peter could feel at home. A fancy apartment but it still reminded you of Queens. Tony had windows project sounds and views so it was practically a home away from home.

“Turning on Don’t Bother Us Program, engaging soundproof walls, be safe you two” Karen’s voice then turns off. You hear a beep signaling she was offline.

“You think I was just going to walk out of here to practice, rock hard and leave my girl flustered?” His voice getting lower as his strides bring him to the edge of the bed.Peter’s figure radiated dominance as he looks down at you.

“I-I” You were the stuttering one now. Peter is the one to normally stutter but once in the bedroom hes completely different. It was a good different.

“I told you that you could bring a man to his knees, that only man will be me” Peter’s hands grip your thighs pulling you to the edge.My skin felt like heat and fire under his palms. Your chest rising and falling slowly. He spreads your legs lowering himself down to his knees. The eye contact between you two not breaking at all.

“P-Peter..” his name coming out as a gasp. Feeling his tongue slowly licking between your folds. His thumb starts rubbing your clit in small circles. A loud moan comes out from the sensation. His thumb is then replaced by his tongue as he inserts fingers inside of you. Your nails dig into the sheets as you look down at him pleasing you.

“C’mon babygirl, tell me what you want” His hot breath fanning across your core.

Feeling your stomach tightening as his tongue flicks faster. Arching your back as the pleasure travels in your body. He slid another finger in as your thoughts started jumbling together. Curling his fingers inside you hitting your g-spot when he makes a come hither motion.

“M-more please , I want your cock inside me Peter” you beg as your legs started to twitch. Desperation clear in your voice. The look in his eyes making you on the edge about to cum.

Flicking his free wrist his web shooter expands onto his hand. A web pinning both your hands to the headboard. His chest rose and fell quicker as he gazed at your body. You looked helpless tied up to the headboard. A groan coming from him as you spread your legs , inviting him to you. You wanted him more than ever.

“How bad do you need it” He smirks crawling onto the bed. Your eyes screwed shut while his hand slid up your legs. His hips lowering down towards where you needed him most.

“S-so bad Peter, please baby” you manage to moan out as his lips pressing kisses in between your breasts. Slowly moving back up to your neck. You gasp as he slams into you without warning. The feeling of him inside you causes you to bite our lip.

Peter’s lets out a low moan tilting his head back. All you wanted to do was to touch him but you were restrained. Peter’s hands dug into your hips as his pace started to pick up. Uncontrollable moans came out of your mouth. He filled you up just right making you pant out his name.

Peter!”

“Look at how your tits bounce as I fuck you” His head tilting back, his veins in his neck showing. Holy fuck. You feel his hands move as he angles your hips up. The new angle making a loud moan come out,he went even deeper hitting the right spot. Grunts coming from him as he continued to pound into your dripping pussy. Thank god for the sound proof walls, you were loud when it came to expressing the pleasure you received. Peter loved hearing you thats why he had the system installed.

“P-Peter untie me please I w-want to touch you” your voice coming out as a whisper. You felt out of breath as you looked down. Watching as he filled you up with each thrust.

“I love seeing you like this “ he whispers running his finger down your chest and down your body. Your breath hitching in your throat.

“Under my control, only I can give you pleasure like this..” he whispers as his thrust becoming slower. Panting you try to rip his webs apart with your nails. All you want to do is touch him and run your fingers through his soft curls.

“You can’t get away from me,you wanna know why?” he grins cockily. Bastard knows his new web formula is tougher. His body gets closer to you if that’s even possible. Feeling your hands become free your hand grips onto his curls. The other scratching down his back. He hisses from the pain as your nails dig into his skin.

“Cause you’re my girl” his hand cups your cheek as he thrusts into you harder causing your head to hit the headboard.

“You’re mine, you got that princess?” His hips slam into you harder and harder. Nodding as a reply you keep eye contact with him. The pleasure feeling so intense you felt like you were going to burst.

Peter tugs on your hair letting out a low growl. “Let me hear that pretty voice, answer me” he demands kissing your jaw in fiery kisses.

“I’m y-yours Peter, please let me cum” your moans and whimpers filled the air as he reached between you rubbing your clit in fast circles.

“C’mon darling, cum for me cum all over my cock” Moans come out of his mouth as his thrusts start to get sloppy. The stamina he had in him had you breathless. Your orgasm causes you to hold tightly onto Peter. Your legs trembling as it coursed through you. Him filling you with his load shortly after, collapsing on top of your body.

Peter rolls over pulling your body next to his. Your chest was falling up and down. Both of you were panting trying to catch your breath. Your body could just melt into the mattress, exhaustion taking over you.

“Karen, please start the shower and play some AC/DC for me” Peter speaks up a bit due to his voice being shaky from his breathing.

Turning on the shower, Peter you lasted a lot longer than you did the last time should we mark it as your new record?” Karen asks waiting for a response.

He was keeping track of how long he could last?

Peter Benjamin Parker” you sit up looking at your boyfriend. His cheeks turning pink as he sits up.

“Babygirl I-“

“You’re seriously keeping track?” You laugh placing your head in your hands. He is such a dork.

“Y-You’re not mad?” He questions tilting your chin up.

“Now I want to see how fast I can make you cum and start my own record” you grin sitting up heading toward the bathroom.

“I already have a record for how fast I can” Peter stands crossing his arms over his chest with a grin.

“Looks like I have to beat you, next time who ever loses has to clean the training rooms next week” you challenge looking back at him.

“Oh it’s so on, you’re going to cum and beg for me like always” he lifts you over his shoulder towards the shower.

“PETER!” You scream out as he starts to tickle your sides. From serious to childish, what a catch.

Peter is sweet in the street but a freak in the sheets.©

Have fun being stranded in the Philippines.

Please be patient, the buildup to this is intense and long but the resulting revenge has probably put me on the Devil’s shortlist. (tl:dr at the end)

About 3 months before I finally quit, I was getting really pissed. Management was never in the office, the Owner couldn’t make up his mind about anything, and so many people were quitting that I ended up being the only Programmer/Developer in an office of about 50 people… for a company that received 95% of its business from online sales. People started taking credit for my work and I decided to quit. Looked around for jobs, found one pretty quickly, and put in my two weeks notice with a nice little note that simply said something to the effect of “I hereby resign, effective blah blah blah”.

Lo and behold the man who had in the last few days become my manager (we’ll call him Frank) instead of idk maybe promoting the only programmer in the company to the head of the development department, begged me to stay, promised me a raise, and told me about their new project and how he wanted me to be involved.

Yuuri and his Decision Not to Retire in ep 12

So I was doing some thinking and realized that while I’ve talked to death about Victor’s career decision in episode 12, I’ve never really delved into the intricacies of Yuuri’s. He makes a career decision that’s just as important as Victor’s – to not retire.

This might sound odd since he’s never taken a break like Victor did but Yuuri had been planning all season to retire after the GPF. He feels his time in his career is limited, and we see him come back to this multiple times throughout the series. That itself spawned from the fact that even before Victor came, Yuuri had been considering the idea of retirement. Then, in episode 12, he made the choice not to retire but to continue skating. Why?

I’ve heard multiple people’s interpretations of the reason(s) for this decision and I’ve gotten a lot varied responses, so I figured I’d share mine! Let’s start from the beginning of the episode and work our way through!

If you are butthurt over the fact that there exist special conferences specifically for women in physics only, not men in physics, I’m happy to block you. Because I have no interest in arguing with you.

Women are minorities in physics (roughly 20%). We face unique problems that men in our field do not face. Conferences for women function as a safe space for us to enjoy our field without the gender bias and sexism we face at regular conferences or, really, every day in our own departments. A space for us to come together and talk about our experiences and encourage each other to stay in this field we love.

It is not a place intended to specifically exclude men. Rather, it is a place to include or even protect women.

One of my friends decided not to pursue physics after graduation because at an interview she was actually asked, “Do you think you can keep up with the boys?” A man in a female-dominated field would never be asked that question.

There are countless stories on the internet of women being forced out of their labs and/or entire fields because their advisor was sexually harassing and/or assaulting them when those advisors have too much influence in their field not to completely destroy the careers of those women.

I watch as my male classmates do their homework together, asking each other questions, collaborating freely and openly, with no judgment. But whenever I study with them and ask a question, I am treated like a burden to them. Even though I’m doing just as well in my classes as the boys, if not better than many of them.

I would hear the boys gossip about the girls in the other year of physics. Making judgmental comments about their work. Comments that were more severe on them than their male counterparts that were clearly doing worse. One of the girls they made fun of I was told by another girl in the program, “Yeah. She got a 100 on nearly every assignment. She was so smart.” But they didn’t want to see that side of her. They only picked out her mistakes.

I was sexually assaulted at a national physics conference by an older man in the field. But I guess I was too naive to talk to him about his career, right? I was asking for it at a professional conference where I was trying to network and build my career? My pant suit was too sexy or something?

Honestly, fuck you if you think women don’t deserve to have their own conferences. We fucking deserve it. If you didn’t realize it before, I hope this helps you understand. But if you outright refuse to acknowledge this problem, I have no time for you.

I know that you love me, even when I lose my head by LunaCanisLupus_22 (13/13 | 135,305 | NC17)

“We’re not mates, Cora,” he insists. “I mean look at him-“

“Ouch,” the kid says, no longer pushing that shit eating grin.

“He’s- he’s,” Derek tries, at a loss of how to explain why this can’t be possible. Why it shouldn’t be possible.

Hale of a Clue by Farscapegeek (1/1 | 21,525 | PG13)

Stiles isn’t sure how long he stands there mouth agape at the man in front of him but he is sure it was far longer than what was polite. But he can’t help admiring the man’s jaw line, and scruff, and the way he fills out the suit.

“Are you coming in or would you prefer to objectify me on the porch all night?” A gruff, but not unpleasantly so, voice calls out.

Flailing a bit Stiles moved towards the man, wondering is he the butler, doorman, or host of this party. All he knows is he is wishfully thinking this guy isn’t totally straight. “Are you the butler?” he blurts out, then cringes. Way to make a first impression, Stiles.

The man’s impressive eyebrows narrow into a scowl. “Yes. I’m Wadsworth. The coat rack is there.” Wadsworth turns and visibly winces as his shoe squelches.

“Aren’t you supposed to do that for me? You do work here right?” Stiles asks as he shrugs off his jacket.

“No, I just like to trespass in creepy houses on hills in the rain and open doors for people that drive death traps.” Wadsworth says, as he blows out a deep breath and points Stiles towards the coat rack.

On Applying to 20+ Colleges

I completed 24 college applications, submitted 17 (to Princeton, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Rice, Amherst, Georgetown, Emory, UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Michigan, UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA, University of Pittsburgh, Williams, Washington University in St. Louis, Harvard and Yale) and received admission to all except the last four.

N.B. Some of this info may be dated/inaccurate and 100% of it is tinged w/ my own bias.

Things To Think About

Why do you want to apply to so many colleges?

  • If it’s hubris (i.e. “I want to collect admissions offers like trophies”) or fear (i.e. “If I submit more applications, I’m less likely to be shut out from every school I apply to"), stop and reevaluate. I applied to Vanderbilt even though I knew I’d never want to head south. The reason? It traditionally takes a lot of kids from my HS. Yeah, don’t be like me.

Do you really want to spend all that money?

  • I ended up wasting $2500 (and that’s a conservative estimate) on 17 schools. I’ll only be attending one college in the fall.

That said…it can be done.

General Tips

  • The “Why Us” essay isn’t asking “why would you choose our college?” so much as “why should our college choose you?” Emphasize how you’ll contribute to the college—inside the classroom and out—by referencing specific programs, classes, and extracurriculars.
  • Creating a template is a major time-saver. Once you have an effective “skeleton,” all you have to do is insert school-specific details.
  •  Stay organized.
    • Create a spreadsheet. These were my columns: College Name, Application Type, Application & Aid Deadline, Standardized Test Report, Transcript & SS Form, Recommendation Letter Deadline, Creative Writing Supplement (Y/N), Interview (Y/N), Merit Scholarship (Y/N), CSS Profile, FAFSA, Sticker Price, Response Date.
    • If you use Google Drive, create a folder for each college.
  • Consider making a CV/resume. Keep it short (~1 page). Possible uses: upload as a part of your application; hand it to alumni interviewer.

Miscellaneous

  • Don’t apply to Georgetown unless you really really like it. There’s a separate application (not Common App) that’s cumbersome to fill out, and you can’t access it until you pay the application fee (which also happens to be p expensive)
  • Optional essays are NEVER optional. Hopefully, this is obvious.
  • The more selective publics (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UVA, UNC, UMich) are more holistic than you think. They reject high stats kids on the reg (anecdote: a dude from my school who got into Caltech didn’t get into Berkeley; another who got into Cornell didn’t get into UMich) so PAY ATTENTION to the essays.
  • Alumni interviews don’t matter AT ALL unless you make a terrible impression—or possibly if you’re a borderline applicant.

N.B. Applying to colleges based on the perceived difficulty of the application isn’t the greatest idea. That said, for your reference:

Easy College Applications

Vanderbilt University

  • Very easy. Only a 100-word extracurricular essay, I believe. Unless you want to fill out a scholarship application.

Washington University in St. Louis

  • Also very easy. No supplement unless you fill out scholarship app.

Amherst College

  • Zero work if you have a graded school essay you’re proud of (can upload in lieu of a college supplement)

Harvard University

  • I think there’s just one supplement and you can write about whatever you want.

Cornell University

  • Just one “Why Us” essay

University of Pennsylvania

  • One “Why Us” Essay, unless you’re applying to Engineering or a special program like Wharton, M&T, etc.

Moderate College Applications

Duke University

  • Three supplements, I think. All fairly straightforward. There’s a diversity essay that’s optional (refer to the Miscellaneous section)

Princeton University

  • A lot of short, lighthearted questions (favorite keepsake, favorite movie, etc.) and an essay (they give you three prompts to choose between)

Stanford University

  • Three fairly straightforward, 150-word essays. There’s a letter to your roommate, an intellectual interest essay, and something else.

Emory University

  • Easy, short supplements, but there are three of them.

All the UCs

  • There’s one UC application for all the UC schools (Berkeley, LA, Irvine, etc.) so same essays and everything, but you have to pay an application fee for each school you apply to. There are a lot of questions (called Personal Insight Questions) so it’s not quick, but once you’re done you’ve covered multiple schools. Also, if you are applying, ask your counselor about the UC GPA.

UMich

  • Three short essays, one of which is “Why Major.” Another is an extracurricular essay. Don’t remember the third.

UNC

  • I don’t really remember the supplements, but they weren’t that bad.

Difficult/Thought-Provoking College Applications

Yale University

  • This is hard because there are a ton of questions with 35, 100, and 150- word limits. “Why Yale” essay. Hard to come up with insightful answers/make an impression with so little space.

UChicago

  • I personally wasn’t a fan of the cutesy/philosophical prompts, and the essays that I wrote (but ultimately never submitted) reflected my utter lack of interest. If you enjoy them, UChicago may just be the school for you :P

Dartmouth College

  • Only three short i.e. 150 word essays, but one of them referenced Sesame Street. Something along the lines of ‘It’s not easy being green. Discuss.” There was another one on describing a time when you said YES to something. Anyway, I disliked them and never completed my application.

UVA

  • I think there are three short essays, but they require a decent amount of thought. Although UVA is a public school, craft your essays well. The admission officers care a lot about them.

Williams College

  • There’s only one short supplement, but it’s a real pain. Hard not to veer into cliche territory.

Tedious College Applications

Columbia University

  • So many (five?) supplements. Some are generic though. “Why Columbia,” a list of books you’ve read/media you’ve consumed.

Rice University

  • Also a lot of supplements. “Why Rice,” “Why Major,” Diversity essay, the famous box (where you can upload any image you want).

anonymous asked:

What do you think of Hulk the pit bull and the media portrayal of him and his breeders? Just curious

Oh boy. Alright, I think I may end up being attacked for this post, because I’ve seen that “Hulk” has quite a few huge following of supporters and I have seen that they that do not particularly like it when anyone criticizes the the dog’s breeders, but I will try my best here, I will try to tread lightly so please bare with me, thank you.

The fact is, “Hulk” is not a Pit Bull. And it would be best if we all stopped referring to him as such.

For anyone not familiar with “Hulk”, he is the record holding “World Largest Pit Bull” bred & owned by Dark Dynasty K9s. This is “Hulk”:

Let’s start with his breeders, Dark Dynasty K9s , who have probably never even seen a real APBT/Pit Bull, and wouldn’t know one if one bit them on the face.

I am not going to demonize DDK9 as dog owners, because I suppose from their photos and videos that they must love their dogs, but what DDK9 is doing as breeders is an entirely different story.

What DDK9 is doing is very irresponsible, unethical, greedy, actually, and even detrimental to the image of the real American Pit Bull Terrier and it’s potentially damaging to the millions of non-APBTs bully breeds that are falsely labeled as APBTs. And because of the size of “Hulk”, this could very well put mastiff-type breeds in the same boat as bully breeds. And “Hulk” is giving public the false impression that Pit Bulls are capable of reaching 100, 150, 175+lbs.

A lot of what DDK9 does as breeders raises countless red flags. The most immediate red flag is that they do not even know how to spell the breed of dog they are supposedly breeding. “Pitbulls”, really?

They advertise their dogs as “XL Pitbulls”, which are essentially just oversized American Bullies (or American Bully x mastiff-type mixes?).

DDK9 claims that “Hulk” and their dogs are registered with the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) (as well as the UKC).

However, the ADBA themselves denounced DDK9, stating that “Hulk” is not registered with the ADBA, which you can see from the screen shots below:

And as said by @thembulldawgs - Below is the pedigree of “Hulk”, and not a single APBT in sight. But we see there are plenty of American Bullies listed as being APBTs. Here is his pedigree including images of each dog.

In the pedigree of “Hulk”, you will see a “Razors Edge” dog listed by the name of “Razors Edge Payback is a Bomb” (shown below), highlighted in yellow, which is the ever so highly popular original American Bully line commonly (& falsely) referred to as Pit Bulls.

And, also “Eddington’s Wanna Be A Whopper” (shown below) with a controversial, sketchy history as either an American Bulldog or mixed breed falsely registered as an APBT in the UKC & ADBA, which you can read about here because I really do not want to delve into that.

Below are images meant illustrate the different sizes in this American Bully size chart, including the “Pocket”, “Classic”, ”Extreme”, “Standard”, and lastly the “XL” American Bully.

Because DDK9′s website does not include any of the important details about their breeding program, I decided maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt…

And so I contacted DDK9 through email, asking them if their dogs undergo any health screenings and evaluations, what their standards are in breeding in terms of health and whether they aim to breed away from certain health issues using screening results to better their breeding program.

This is why it took me a while to get to your question, because I wanted to give DDK9 some time to respond to my email, and well it has been about four weeks now and I have not yet received a response. But if they ever do reply, I’ll be sure to post it.

DDK9 advertise their dogs as being “huge”, having “great wide chests” and that their dogs produce “monsters”. DDK9′s sole goal is to produce more of these massive, oversized American Bullies like “Hulk”, and I have just read that by breeding “Hulk” within their own kennel they are working towards breaking his current “record” as the world’s largest (fake) “Pitbull” at 175lbs with his offspring.

His pups may become XXL Pitbulls themselves when they grow up,” says americanbullydaily.com

I found that one of their breeding bitches in particular was bred twice within a year under the age of two. With how enormous these dogs are, it’s incredibly irresponsible and potentially harmful to be breeding them before they have had time to fully mature, not to mention it was at that bitch’s every heat. While this is just one example of premature breeding, surely this is a common practice at DDK9, especially considering their hurried efforts to prodce another record breaking” “Pitbull”. There is no way that DDK9 is breeding responsibly or with the health and welfare of their dogs in mind.

“Hulk” allegedly weighs 175 lbs, and is clearly overweight. Just look at this dog:

I actually wonder if his breeders have intentionally packed as much excess weight onto “Hulk” as possible, in effort to truly make him the “World’s Largest”? The poor dog is probably one wrong step or hop away from blowing a knee, and not to mention all the other health risks involved in canine obesity, especially a dog of such a massive size.

Below is an illustration highlighting the ADBA’s standard for the American Pit Bull Terrier:

The American Pit Bull Terrier’s UKC standard calls for dogs/bitches to weigh between 30 lbs and 60 lbs, and the ADBA calls for 30 lbs to 75 lbs, with 60 to 75 lbs being on the larger side which are few and far between compared to dogs/bitches of smaller sizes. The American Pit Bull Terriers is a small to mid-sized dog, an athletic breed with great physical ability.

To compare to the above photos of “Hulk”, here are some photos of real purebred APBTs:

Below, side-by-side examples of the difference between DDK9’s “XL Pitbull” (aka American Bully) and purebred American Pit Bull Terriers:

( Borrowed from The Real APBT )

Examples of American Staffordshire Terrier (AST), American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), Staffordshire Bull Terrier (SBT) & American Bully:

And @notapitbull has an entire tag dedicated to examples of purebred American Pit Bull Terriers here

Another huge red flag about Dark Dynasty K9 is that they “train” their “XL Pitbulls” in “protection”, in their own backyard (I cannot seem to find their credentials in this area, or any titles their dogs have earned).

DDK9 allows all of their dogs to freely socialize / interact with one another, even sometimes including clients’ dogs that are boarded at their kennel / farm.

According to americanbullydaily.com, “Additionally, he [Marlon Grennan, breeder] does not believe in separating each dog whether they are in training or not. By removing any fences, physical restrictions and barriers the dogs train and live together as a pack that teaches them how to socialize with other.

Real American Pit Bull Terriers / Pit Bulls more often than not are known for exhibiting at least some degree of dog & animal aggression, and with real APBTs it would be next to impossible for a dozen Pit Bulls to socialize, interact and roam freely without a fight breaking out. These are not Pit Bulls. And I am understating.

The media hype surrounding “Hulk” has only helped in giving his breeders more reason to charge tens of thousands to half a million by exploiting “Hulk” for stud services and his “XL Pitbull” puppies.

When the media surrounds anything canine related, it makes me terribly nervous, especially when it’s about Pit Bulls, because it tends to be more harmful than anything. When a dog bites, it’s the family’s once harmless “pibble” mix, or in the case of “Hulk”, it’s misrepresenting an entire breed and giving the public a false impression of what a Pit Bull really is.

According to www.peoplemagazine.co.za:The gentle giant is a doting father to his puppies and is even allowed to play with the couple’s three-year-old son. “Hulk has shown the world that when this breed is gentle and balanced, they can be the greatest dogs in the world,” said Grennan.”

No, instead what “Hulk” and his breeders have done for the APBT breed is that they have given the public an altered and damaging perception of the American Pit Bull Terrier as a breed.

A lot of rescue organizations that specializes in bully breeds, have even spoken out against “Hulk” and what his breeders are doing, and have called for the media to stop portraying “Hulk” and his breeders in a positive light.

By continuing to misrepresent dogs like “Hulk” as Pit Bulls, it is seriously damaging to the APBT breed, bully breeds, and to non-APBTs dogs, and just dogs in general, especially when these same non-APBT dogs are involved in dog attacks or are impounded at city pounds / animal shelters. And because of the appearance of “Hulk”, this could be potentially detrimental to Mastiff breeds such as the Cane Corso, Presa Canario, and other similar looking breeds that may find themselves in a dog attack or shelter and are mislabeled as Pit Bulls.

So, end point: “Hulk” is NOT a Pit Bull, so please stop calling him one!

Actually, it would be best if we stopped calling ALL non-pedigree bully breeds/mutts Pit Bulls.

Below are some more articles about “Hulk”

I really tried my best here, but if any others would like to chime in? @notapitbull @thembulldawgs

What I Learned From University

FIRST YEAR

  • Everyone is super friendly, especially in the first few weeks → Introduce yourself to the people sitting near you for the first few weeks of lectures. Everyone is looking for a friend or at least someone to talk to!!
  • If you commute, make that time productive → My bus ride was an hour there and back each day. It sucks but I would try to be productive for at least half of the commute. I have a post about being productive on public transport here.
  • On that note, stay on campus as long as possible each day → As soon as I got back home I would procrastinate every little thing. Stay in an already productive environment for as long as possible.
  • Maybe don’t buy your textbooks used → I thought I was being smart by buying used textbooks (most schools will have a buy and sell facebook page for textbooks). I ended up having to pay for access codes in order to do my online homework – access codes that cost ~$70 separately and came included with new textbooks anyways. Email your prof or talk to someone who has recently taken the class to find out if you need an access code. If you do, your best bet is to buy a new version of the textbook (unless you can get a seriously cheap used textbook).
  • Print off your timetable and find all of your classes before the first day → This helped me so much! I found exactly where all my classes were before the first day of class. I wrote down little tricks to help me remember where everything was (i.e. my calc lecture is in the arts and science building which is also where the only subway on campus is).
  • Don’t knock living at home to save money → If you’re lucky enough to have a college or university close to home at least consider living at home. Getting your own place or living in dorms is expensive. (But if you have to find off campus housing on your own, don’t leave it too late or you might not find a place)
  • Figure out the best way to take notes for each class → You have to customize the way you study for each class, all depending on the prof and the content. I hand-wrote notes for some classes (chem, calc, and physics), but not others (psych and bio). If you’re writing by hand you can always just annotate your textbook notes or lecture slides (if they’re posted before class). If you fall behind while taking notes, just leave a gap and check out a friend’s notes after class.
  • Adjust your expectations → Don’t expect to get straight A’s, like you might have in high school. You can strive for straight A’s but be realistic as time goes on. For classes I struggled with, I expected to be near the class average. If I was a lot lower than the class average then I would know to invest more time.
  • Make time for physical activity → If we’re being honest I hardly exercised during uni. Go for at least a half hour walk each day and try to start a physical activity routine. Get a friend and join a sports team, go to a fitness class, or commit to some form of a daily workout with them! You’ll feel bad bailing on someone else, plus working out is more fun with other people.
  • Review content throughout the semester → Reviewing little bits of content will save you a massive content review right before finals! Look through old notes while you wait for your daily coffee or take 15 minutes to watch some khan academy videos on stuff you learned in the first month of classes.
  • Think seriously about how much you can handle → Don’t take on too many responsibilities at once and consider all of your options! I worked weekends and some week nights throughout the school year. Looking back I should have worked less because my stress levels were way too high. Also, quite a few people I talked to took 4 classes instead of 5, for their first semester of university. I don’t think I would have done it, in the end, but it’s always something to consider.
  • Have fun but be responsible at parties → Always go to parties with people you trust!! If you didn’t do much partying/drinking during high school (like me), remember to pace yourself when drinking! Eat before you go out and have some water between each drink, till you find your limit. Don’t let yourself be peer-pressured into anything but also don’t be afraid to have fun! And check out if your uni has a safe walk program (someone will come and walk you back to your dorm or your car if you feel unsafe or nervous for any reason)
  • When procrastination hits, aim to be productive in some way → The only reason my biology mark was so high was because I would study biology whenever I got sick of studying for physics and calculus. If you know you need to study but just can’t do it, start by being productive in some other way – study a subject you do like, do your laundry, organize your study area, etc. Get your brain to start thinking productively.
  • Labs are difficult so be prepared → I had so many labs first year. Some tips: eat and hydrate before labs, never assume you can finish your prelab last minute, be nice to your lab partner, always remember lab safety (don’t be the person trying to wear shorts in the lab, TAs will not hesitate to kick you out), don’t rush through an experiment but be efficient, and ask for help (even if you feel like you’re bothering your TA).
  • Please go to bed early. Sleep affects everything → I was so dumb and would never go to bed early even though I had to be up at 6 am almost every day to catch the bus. Lack of sleep will catch up to you eventually!! Also, all nighters are not necessary, unless you make them necessary. I prioritized and never had to stay awake too late. And never pull an all nighter the night before an exam (you’re better off getting sleep and resting your brain).
  • Bring a water bottle everywhere → Buy a decent water bottle and always carry it with you. Even though my uni is small there are still tons of spots around campus where I can refill my water bottle!! Stay hydrated my friends!
  • A practice problem a day keeps the F away → This saying probably works best for science classes, but I guess a reading a day will get you somewhere too. Do something for every class each day, even if it’s just a practice problem or a quick reading. Develop a routine!
  • You’ll have lots of midterms → I was under the impression that midterms happened just once a semester (I thought I would have one week where I had a midterm for each class). That was not my reality. I had 2 or 3 midterms for each of my classes scattered throughout the semester. Study really hard for your first set of midterms till you get used to the high expectations!
  • Don’t worry about what other people are doing or thinking → This is mostly in regards to social media. I was bummed when I looked back on my first year of university, because I felt like I hadn’t done anything fun compared to other people. You only see the image that other people want you to see. You don’t know how hard someone worked or how hard they didn’t work. Just focus on you and how you can affect positive results in your life.
  • Other people literally don’t care about your appearance → My friend’s little sister visited campus and asked us “Why is everyone wearing sweatpants?” People literally don’t care. Dress nice and put lots of makeup on one day, because you feel like it, and wear sweats the next day.
  • Start essays and reports as soon as possible → You never know what might come up so be prepared for the worst! Outline your essay or graph your data as soon as you can.
  • Eat healthy and do meal prep → You can eat healthy during university! Set aside a couple of nights each week to do meal prep. Cook food in bulk to save money and don’t eat out too much. Try to have at least 1 serving of fruits or veggies with each meal or snack you eat!
  • Find a good study spot on campus → Explore your campus and figure out your favourite places to study. I had a couple of spots where I would always meet my friends to study and quiet spots where no one would bother me. Studying outside or in an area with natural light is always good.
  • Don’t be afraid to talk to your profs and TAs → This is the number one thing I’m going to try to do more of in my second year. TAs are chill to talk to and they can tell you tons of useful information on what upper year classes are like, which professors are good, why they chose to go to grad school, etc. If you’re struggling in lectures or labs, talk to your prof or TA! Make an appointment and be sure you can tell them exactly which concepts you’re struggling with or at least where you got lost. One of my profs told us he just waits hopefully during office hours for someone to come in. (Also profs love it if you ask them about their research or any topics they seem passionate about during lectures.)
  • Explore all the resources your university has to offer → My university has a program that is basically people bringing their dogs around for students to pet, in order to relieve stress. It actually works and gave me something to look forward to! Just be aware of your options so that if something in your life changes you know where you can go to ask for help.
  • Get a planner and utilize it → There’s no excuse not to have a planner of some sort. Use your phone, get a bullet journal, or buy a cheap planner. Have somewhere where you can record important deadlines and make to do lists. I also recommend back planning all of your studying at the beginning of the semester. Write down your midterms and finals dates and write down how much you’re going to study each day leading up to the exam. This way you’ll be able to look ahead at each month and figure out what needs to be done (i.e. getting an essay done early because the due date falls during a busy week of midterms)

This post ended up being a lot longer than I expected whoops. Take the things I said into consideration but remember that everyone’s experience will be different. Good luck to everyone heading to university!
