Jongdae was sitting beside the rink, untying the laces of his skates. The cold of the air bit his cheeks, his fingers turned red because he forgot his gloves again. He felt the bruise forming on his knee, throbbing, warm under his touch through the fabric of his jeans. He was trying to learn a proper spin, a sit spin, and he had lost balance. The momentum of the spin had sent him onto his knee, crashing into the ice. Bruises were a common thing for him, he wasn’t the best figure skater of the class. But he loved doing it more than speed skating. His parents just wanted him to do what he wanted to do. Although his father had suggested taking up soccer or hockey, because he had noticed his son wasn’t the most skilled at the sport he chose. “Jongdae! Are you coming?“ His mother called from the bleachers where she was talking to another mom. It was Taemin’s mother, he was in his group too. Taemin was a lot better than him, and had his first solo competition coming up soon. Jongdae wanted to do competitions too, he loved watching them. There was something exciting about watching the professionals skate. The way they shifted from edge to edge without any problem, how they jumped like they were flying. The hypnotic sound of the sharp blades on the ice, soft, gliding, scarping, tapping.
My passion in life is to prevent this from ever becoming a reality, which is one of the main reasons I chose to go vegan.
A Cornell study found that producing animal-based protein requires eight times more fossil-fuel energy than creating plant-based protein. It takes 100 to 200 times more water to produce a pound of beef than it does to grow a pound of plant foods. Plus, the United Nations has reported that the livestock sector is most likely the largest source of water pollution. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, “If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetables and grains … the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.” Imagine what a difference we could make if we stopped eating animal-based foods entirely.
When thinking about “saving the environment”, most think that they can make the biggest impact by buying a Prius or installing solar panels on their homes. While these options may help, they’re nothing compared to what cutting meat out of their diets could do.
“Only when the last tree has been cut down; Only when the last river has been poisoned; Only when the last fish has been caught; Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.” We only have one place to live, and it can either be destroyed or be saved by every day choices that we all make. We can either make excuses, or make a change. Be the change.
