my pakistan

i envy people who have dreams with clear rational plots like “i was on my favourite tv show for a day” my dreams are like i’m in a diner and i’m pregnant. i leave the diner and i’m in a forest watching the pregnant woman who is no longer me. she turns around and now we’re in a jeep and she’s my dad. we’re listening to music which is somehow numbers. he asks if i remember the time we went to pakistan and i say yeah because i do. i wake up and remember i’ve never been to pakistan in my life.

I feel terrible whenever I hear my parents talking to each other about our household’s income. We only own a South Asian store, where we sell like spices, henna, frozen Desi foods, hair products, skin products, daal, etc (typical Desi store stuff). That’s our only source of income. It used to be okay-ish back in elementary and middle school, but ever since these American stores started to sell some of these things (at prices higher than their worth), less people have been shopping at our store, hence our income declining.

Please, I’m begging y'all, support your local South Asian stores, and shop there if you need any of those “South Asian” items (if there is a South Asian store near you). At least 60% of the owners are likely going through the same as my parents. Also, I can almost guarantee you’ll save money shopping at the local Desi stores as opposed to stores like Safeway, Vons, Krogers, etc.

“I’m driving to pay off my student debts.  I had to start college late because my father had a stroke shortly after I graduated high school.  He couldn’t afford to stop working.  So I worked in a fried chicken restaurant seven days a week while he recovered. When he first came home from the hospital, I carried him down the stairs.  He had tears in his eyes.  My father emigrated from Pakistan in the eighties.  He worked hard so that I could have a better life.  In that moment, I think he saw that I’d turned into the son that he’d always hoped for.”

Bangladeshi Independence Day.

44 years ago on the night of March 25th, Bangladesh declared freedom from Pakistan after years of suffering. Today on March 26th, I will be thinking of my ancestors. I will be thinking of the almost half a million Bangladeshi women raped by Pakistani soldiers. I will be thinking of my people who survived the genocide, and the ones who did not.

Thank you for all you did, thank you for our independence, thank you for our liberation.

Always wanted to be able to explore the beauty of Pakistan, particularly Kashmir

After a 16 hour road trip, 2 hours of jeep trekking and another hour of horseback riding the view of Ratti Gali Lake was definitely earned. Camping in sub zero temperatures and waking up amidst mountains was possibly the best experience of my life.

Kashmir, you beauty 🌾

Independence Day

O you! You’re so far away, miles from your homeland,
Do you even remember your country, it’s crying in pain.
The green flag is flying high yet the hearts are difficult to mend,
With political turmoil surrounding, there is no peace even in rain.

Do you remember what you’ve left behind, to go in the foreign land,
The land that was yours, the streets that were yours, they say your name.
The country understands though, it knows you, it awaits your return so grand,
The soil, the winds, the things that exist here, parallel to no fame.

Do you remember how old I am now, do you know how many years I have survived,
O you! Living in the foreign land, know this that I miss you.
Amidst all the plots and plans and sufferings, with the grace of Almighty I have thrived,
My only ask will be to one day come back and grace me with the you.

I am getting older now, and with every year I feel I’m becoming more frail,
I’m the land of the pure, I’m Iqbal’s dream, I am Quaid’s mission.
I’ve come into being, in my history you’ll find many sacrifices, a bloody trail,
With the sights casted up, hopes rekindled, I shall exist with the Eagle’s vision.

For in the words of Iqbal:

Tundi-e- Baad-E-Mukhalif se na ghabra, ae Uqaab;
Yeh to chalti hai tujhe uncha urane ke liye.
(Don’t you get frightened of these furious, violent winds, Oh Eagle!
These blow only to make you fly higher)

Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle
Khuda bande se khud pooche bata teri raza kya hai.
(Elevate yourself so high that even God, before issuing every decree of destiny,
Should ask you: Tell me, what is your intent?)
