Headcanon of the day

Kirk finds himself at a loss during beta shift, and heads to the gym.
Spock’s there, running, and the atmospheric controls in his booth are different to the rest of the ship - hotter, with less oxygen. Jim thinks it’s a pretty good way to increase exercise intensity.
About halfway through his workout, just after Spock leaves, Jim is left with a realisation so heavy he all but falls off his treadmill.

It’s nothing to do with the exercise.
Spock was running on Vulcan.

Do you have any suggestions of fics that are like Remus and Sirius raising harry? Cuz that would make my life

I’ve been getting a lot of requests for a “Remus and Sirius raising Harry” fic rec since this post blew up, and I’ve been feeling REALLY BAD about having nothing to offer so I did some digging! I’ve seen some frankly alarming summaries on some of these rec lists, but I’m not your mum. go forth:

15,000 Followers: A New Milestone

Yesterday I logged my 15,000th follower – someone named ‘D. Trump’, who said ‘you’re an “8″ in my book’.   All kidding aside, I never thought I’d have this many.  I thought I’d recognize this milestone by dipping waaaaay back into my archives for some very early pictures I had posted on an earlier tumblr site, back in 2013.  I chose a few pics that represent different personal milestones for me.  The pictures are small in resolution, and often poorer quality.  But they mark my path, and I feel like there’s some personal growth.  Sorry if I bore you with these – it’ll be over soon.

This one was one of my most popular pics from my old tumblr site.  It’s significant to me because it was one of my first prom dress/party dress pics, and featured my kickass silver stilettos.  But I also added the hair bow at the last minute, which I think really makes the shot.  The hair bow was actually part of a little girl’s dress that I bought only for the accessories.  I was lucky that it was the exact same shade of orange.  This shot made me recognize that I could put together a good outfit based on things I’d acquired from different sources.  Assembling outfits that actually complement each other and create an overall total mood is a big skill – one that I’m still working on.

Day 3: Readers and fandom

How long have you been writing Klaine fic? Do you consider yourself a part of the Klaine fandom?

I posted my first fic in 2013, I think? Sometime during season 5. I’d still say I’m part of the Klaine fandom but I’ve definitely slowed down from the way I used to post, which is unfortunate but I think understandable. I’m still writing, though!

Have you written fic in other fandoms or non-Klaine Glee fic or are you a Klaine only kind of a writer?

Nope, I’ve only written Klaine. No other fandoms, and no other pairings within this fandom. No one else interests me enough to write about them, so far..

What’s your most popular fic(s)? Why do you think people loved that story?

Just going off AO3 metrics, it looks like “Public Relations” is my most popular, though I think on Tumblr my most popular has been The Wax Verse. To be honest, I’m not really able to say why people loved “Public Relations” so much; I love the fic and I like how it turned out, but the reaction to it was so much more than I was expecting! As far as The Wax Verse goes, I haven’t put more into any other fic as I have for that verse. It’s a really rich fic. The tropes are fun to play with, and they play with canon in a way that a lot of people (myself included) really enjoy.

What fic do you wish more people had read?

I think my answer to this will always be “Black and Blue,” if for no other reason than I love that fic so much. Not to say that nobody read it; they certainly did, but I love it so much that I wish everyone had read it, haha.

What’s a good thing that’s come out of writing Klaine fic?

Definitely the friendships! Jen and Truffles are such wonderful people and it was easy to bond over our shared love of Klaine, haha

Hey! I haven't heard anything about Adam Goodes? Just your White privileged post. Can you explain it me?or point me somewhere? All the tags are just upset people but they don't mention what happened. Thanks!

I’m sure a lot of non-Australians, or even Australians that don’t follow AFL are in the same boat. This is a complex situation that has built up over the last 3 years. I’ll try to give as much context as I can without making it an essay.

Adam Goodes is an Indigenous Australian AFL player. He is one of the most famous and celebrated players to play the game. He’s won two Brownlow medals (awarded annually to the best player in the entire league as voted by the umpires) and been a vital part in his team winning two Grand Finals. He  won the Rising Star award in his first year, and he has the record for most games played at the Sydney Swans and also most games by an Indigenous player ever. He’s been named in the All Australian team 4 times, captained Australia in the International Rules match, was named in the Indigenous Team of the Century, been the leading goal-kicker at his club 3 times, and was awarded the Best and Fairest at his own club 3 times.

This guy is good at what he does. And was loved for it.

What changed?

In 2014 he was named Australian of the year. He was not the first decorated sportmans to be given the title, but it wasn’t just because of his prowess on the sporting field. It was also because of his work with his The Go Foundation charity (which he founded) which supports Indigenous youth, and for his advocacy against racism.

Leading up to his All-Australian nomination, and during the time he was the recipient of the title, he vocally and publicly began talking about the problem of racism in Australia. Australians do not like it when someone points out how racist we are as a country. [Waleed Aly gives a quick but incredible breakdown of our national attitude to this here]. The media vilified him, the public complained about him. Social media was awash with people calling him a whinger, telling him that if he doesn’t like Australia he can leave.

The anti-Goodes sentiment grew and grew, and culminated this year when the crowds began booing him every time he touched the ball. Its not exactly unusual for crowds to boo a player every time they get the ball. It often happens when a player has done something dirty, or when they move teams and face their old side. The Essendon players were booed when it was revealed they’d been using banned substances, Stephen Milne was booed when it was revealed he raped a woman. It always lasted a few weeks at most and then stopped.

No player or team has ever been so consistently and vehemently booed. Yeah, this guy is getting booed more than players who are actual rapists. It’s not subtle. It’s so loud you can hear it every time you listen to TV or radio coverage of the game [you can hear a little at the start of this news report].

It was so vocal it could not be ignored. The media began asking why it was happening.

The response? A chorus of old white men saying “no racism here!”

And, as usual, the public clung to any excuse to try to make it look like it’s not about racism.

One of the most popular cited reasons is that people say, ‘we don’t like what he did to that 13-year-old girl’. And that is what my post was referring to. In 2013 Goodes was playing near the boundary line when this girl repeatedly called him an ‘ape’. It’s obviously a horrid thing to call any PoC, but it’s especially cutting for Indigenous Australians because only 48 years ago they were still classified as animals by law. A classification that was not only grossly racist, but enabled some horrific abuse and murder of The First Australians.

Goodes pointed her out to security, who removed her from the ground. Post match he defended her, refused to press charges, spoke to her personally and tried to educate her and the public about how damaging her comments were. He handled the situation about as gracefully as any person could, but two years later people are calling him a bully and using it to justify their horrific treatment of him. He’s actually been told to apologise for what he did.

There’s a lot more to this. People are upset about an Indigenous dance he did, that he called Australia Day “Invasion Day” the list goes on. The only people who seem to be taking the issue head on in the media are comedians. There’s tonnes more I could vent about on this issue, but I’m gonna leave it here as I think this gives enough context to encompass what my original post was about.

My Top 5 Most Popular Posts of 2013 (by flora-file)

It has been a good year for me on Tumblr (radar, lensblr, new followers galore), but as good as it has been I must admit my little blog is one of the only things keeping me afloat these days. 2013 may go down as one of the shittiest years of my short existence on planet Earth. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to kick 2013 to the curb. Bring on 2014.

As the year winds down I’ve gone through the thousands of my photos I posted this year and picked out my personal favorites. I’m forever surprised by the reactions to the photos I post. Often a photo that I think is incredible gets hardly any love, while a photo I was about to delete instead of post goes viral. Why were these 5 photos so popular when there were others that were probably better? These 5 photos generated more than 66 K notes between them. What makes them so special?

I went through and picked out some forgotten posts (more or less) that I really liked, despite how well or poorly they were received by the internetters out there. Most photos have an interesting story behind them which I will try to tell, so for the next few days I will be sharing some of my personal favorite photos from 2013. Namaste.

Celebrating 3 Years of Texts From FFXIII!

Three years ago today, I had recently returned home from college for winter break. In the midst of watching a livestream of the newly-released-in-Japan Final Fantasy XIII-2, I decided to make a blog of the FFXIII/Texts from Last Night mashup images I made to distract myself during finals week.

Now, three years later, I’m a (barely-employed) college graduate who writes fanfiction to pretend that I’m doing something useful with my life, and yet I still keep this blog chugging along. And with 4000+ posts and 8000+ followers, it still astounds me how much of a thing this blog has become. To all of the followers and fans out there, thank you so much for your help in carrying this blog so far. <3

As I have done for the past two years, I’ve compiled a “greatest hits” list of the most popular posts. So without further ado, here are the most liked/reblogged posts from December 15th, 2013-December 15th, 2014:

10. “Fuck morning classes. Fuck early work. Fuck anything in the morning that doesn’t involve sleeping, sex, or bacon”

9. “No seriously you guys are gonna get arrested” “Do me a favor I want you to reach down the front of your pants and underwear and just feel around for a while… if you happen to find your balls you can join us”

8. “I think i really like him…he was super cuddly and kept me company” “stop. you already have a dog”

7. “Hey, I took a sweater from your house. And, um, your  little sister’s virginity”

6. “MY WHOLE FAMILY IS TALKING ABOUT MY BUTT” “WAIT I’M COMING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT TOO”

5. “my whole wardrobe smells like substance abuse”

4. “I’m so proud of us for not dying”

3. “Oh my god. I’m not ready to be an adult. I’m not ready.”

2. “Stop watching porn on my work computer” “STOP WORKING ON MY PORN COMPUTER”

1. “EVERYONE CAN HEAR YOU FUCKING YOU ARE IN A TENT”

Here’s to another year of Texts from FFXIII!

"Beyoncé, the winner of 2013" – Forbes
A

s discussed in my previous post, 2013 was supposed to be the Year of Gaga. It wasn’t. Instead, three other pop divas stole the spotlight—first Miley Cyrus, then Lorde, and, most boldly of all, Beyoncé.

That’s not to discredit the cleverness of Cyrus and her team in hijacking the VMAs, not to mention the national discourse on popular music. And it’s no knock on Lorde, who came from nowhere (rather, New Zealand) to deliver music that seems to have made people truly excited about, well, music.

But the surprise launch of Beyoncé’s self-titled album is perhaps most revolutionary not for what it did, but for what it didn’t do. Mrs. Carter is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, signed to one of its more storied labels. Yet she didn’t make use of any of the perks of such an arrangement—the “machine” we’re told is so necessary. There was no radio promotion, no single, no advance press of any kind.

Beyoncé Named The Winner of 2013 by Forbes

There were certainly other success stories in the music business over the past year, but these three struck me as being particularly notable:

Beyoncé

As discussed in my previous post, 2013 was supposed to be the Year of Gaga.

“The fact that nearly 900,000 customers were willing to pay full price to buy this album is testament to the passionate dedication of Beyoncé’s legions of fans,” one veteran entertainment attorney told me. “Most artists have to pre-sell or hype albums by giving away singles on various websites, or streaming the album.”

The result: an opening week total that was more than Gaga’s and Katy Perry’s, combined. Is her success replicable? Probably not. Would it have worked for someone else? Perhaps five or ten other stars. And it’s worth noting that the album, only available as an iTunes download for its first week, was pirated extensively. But having the gumption to take such a risk? That’s what it takes to run the world.
