“Black Friday Rule” aka my official unofficial Mad Sweeney theme song headcanon
A terrible thing happened to me whilst watching American Gods. The series found the soft spot I already had for everyone’s favorite trash leprechaun, prodded it, and said, “but what if we made him MORE SIGNIFICANT and also HOT,” and now here I am in Mad Sweeney hell, rotting away. In a natural progression of my current craving for anything aggressive and Irish, I also find myself once again deep in a Flogging Molly phase and unable to separate the two in my mind.
At first, I thought I was associating Sweeney with “Black Friday Rule” in particular simply since it happens to be a fave. But then I realized: no. No. It’s perfect. It is The Mad Sweeney Song.
The entire song is about an Irishman coming to America and becoming extremely disillusioned with it but being stuck there anyway
It blends modern and traditional styles
— elements of punk rock here, folksy fiddling there, sometimes overlapping them and sometimes letting them stand alone — fitting for an old spirit who’s had to adapt to a modern world
“I want to believe in myself once again” — the very first line of the song! And we all know how important it is in this story for folk like Sweeney to be believed in
Various references to a girl can evoke Essie, Laura, or both, according to your inclination
The contrast between lines like “I’ve been down in this world, down and almost broken” versus “I’ll dance up a storm; sure, life’s looking fine!” is perfect for a luckless leprechaun who can be gleefully bar-fighting one moment and morosely limping along the highway the next
“Don’t fuck with my head” — I mean, he’s Mad Sweeney. Literally driven insane by a curse. I’m pretty sure that counts as his head being fucked with, but if that’s not enough, he says himself that fucking with people is what gods do, and he’s been a victim/instrument of that himself via Wednesday using him against the Moons
“I’m doing the best, hell I’m doing all I can” — y’allllll, if that ain’t the essence of Sweeney’s whole “I’m not evil!” rant…
“For I am the king and sure long may I reign” he literally WAS!!
Anyway, tl;dr, it’s a good song and it works. If you need me, I’ll just be listening to it ad nauseam and digging myself deeper and deeper into this hell.
