my favorite relationship. can you tell

so Shire-talk is canonically a very different dialect of Westron than what Gondorians or Elves or whatever speak and some of the hobbits can code switch between the two and it’s extremely interesting to see how Tolkien portrays it

I’ve just gotten to the part where Frodo meets Faramir, and the difference between how he talks to Faramir and how he talks to Sam, for instance, is v noticable

with Sam he’s a lot more casual and even slightly more modern (for the value of 1954, not 2017) vs with Faramir where he switches to this very formal, quite archaic to our ears (“seven companions we had”)

and then Sam himself doesn’t seem comfortable speaking this prestige dialect (his style includes rather more general “vernacular” features common across regional nonliterary English dialects) - probably bc unlike Frodo he was not given the type of education that would lend itself to learning how to speak it comfortably - so there’s this clash between how Faramir talks to them and how Sam talks back

there’s also the bit where Theoden meets Merry and Pippin, and Merry greets him in very high formality, Pippin addresses Gimli casually bc they’re friends, then turns to Theoden and switches to the formal style, they both talk some more to him, and then after he’s gone Pippin turns to Merry and says Theoden was a “fine old fellow, very polite” (in the more casual style)

In that one scene you have a lot of style switching depending on the person they’re addressing and their status and relationship to the hobbits, but, for instance, Gimli’s sentence structure sounds more like the formal dialect even when he’s happily berating them and calling them villains, probably because he doesn’t use Shire-talk

basically: you can tell this dude was a linguist

I’m sitting in the same coffee house i met you in for the first time. i have nothing else to write on. but I’m watching these two, coffee in hand. they look and talk as though they are on a first date. i hear her telling him how she got the scar on her hand and what her favorite kind of pizza is (its pepperoni). and i cant help but wonder if anyone thought of us here. did they listen to me tell you about my favorite coffee, how i broke my leg, or how beautiful i thought you were. did they listen to us laugh, see us smile? i wonder if they thought back to a first date they had in this very coffee shop. i wonder how many first dates this coffee shop has seen, how many relationships it has unknowingly helped to create. how many laughs it has heard, and how much happiness it has created. it sure created some for me. i can only hope ill be sitting in this coffee shop smiling with you again soon.

#kdramawomensweek: day 8 // age of youth love-fest | happy international women’s day!

So I pretty much put together some of my favorite scenes from Age of Youth. They’re all scenes that really hit me hard emotionally or just personally resonated with me. When Jin Myung, whose feelings have slowly been bubbling underneath the surface, finally overflows with emotion, full of rage and agony. She finally demands the apology she’s been silently asking for. When she fell to the floor in sobs, I cried with her. I felt that grief. When Yi Na realizes she’s been holding herself back and finally lets herself go. Dammit, that scene just hit me. When Eun Jae blows up and just begs for the housemates to be nice to her I could personally relate to her pain and just how nervous she must have felt to finally let that out and tell these almost strangers how alienated they made her feel and how much it had hurt her. That’s not easy.

As you can see, most of my favorite scenes include the girls all together. The relationship that developed between these girls, different in pretty much every way, from being strangers just living in a house together to sisters that loved and protected each other in any way they could was really the main strength of the show. Even that hilarious scene when the girls beat up Eun Jae’s boyfriend because they think he’s some stranger out to hurt her shows just how willing they are to protect each other. I mean, they burst out of the house the second they heard Eun Jae scream. The girls immediately went to comfort Ye Eun when she finally broke up with a boyfriend she loved so much. And when Eun Jae finally comes home after being out all night, the girls just hug her, saying that everything is okay because she’s here and she’s safe. I’m tearing up just thinking of the scene. That love for each other that made them one of the best friendships of 2016 and just in general.

What I love about the girls individual stories is the journey they went through during the drama and where they ended up. They don’t end the drama suddenly complete and whole, but you know they’ve set themselves on that track. They learn to start forgiving and loving themselves. The ghosts they’ve lived with are never completely gone but they’re not held back and tortured by them anymore.

Anyway, what I really want to say is that I love these girls so so so so so much. There’s really nothing I can say that can convey the amount of love I have for this drama and the Belle Epoque girls. It warms my heart when I think of them and I’m just so happy there’s going to be a season 2.

favorite spirk fics?

Wooooot I love this question!

So Wise We Grow (M, 80k, coparenting, friends to lovers, aos) is my all-time favorite Spirk fic (and one of the best things I’ve ever read, period). Fic description: “Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”

Fulfilling the Needs of the One (Or the Both) (T, 8k, established relationship, tos). A little angsty, but lovely at the end. “Spock begins to wonder if his relationship with Jim has been one-sided in his own favor. Jim teaches classes at Starfleet and Spock is an ambassador. Spock goes to visit Jim in his office and finds a student with a bit of a teacher kink being a bit too forward with Jim.“

the warp and weft of your being (T, 7k, fake relationship, friends to lovers, aos). I love this one SO much. “When getting legally married to Spock is the only way to keep him on the ship, Jim is more than willing to do so. (In fact, upon reflection, it turns out that there are very few things he wouldn’t do for Spock.)”

Whatever A Sun Will Always Sing (Is You) (G, 2k, first kisses, aos). Spock nearly dies, and that changes things. “’Captain?’ There is a soft touch to his upper back, just under the collar of his shirt. He wonders if Jim is mindful of his exposed skin. If he purposefully avoids such intimate contact or the whisper of transferring thoughts.”

Walk With Me (M, 12k, friends to lovers, aos). Death and memories and chess and  love and miscommunication–the sweep of this is epic. “Spock gets a second chance.”

Knitting Lessons (T, 4k, pre-relationship, falling in love, aos). “Spock’s mother knit him a sweater, which develops a hole.  Kirk knits it shut–their friendship develops from there.”

All my Spirk bookmarks on ao3 can be found here. If you prefer more tos/established relationship there’s a great rec list here, mohtz’s rec list is here, the consulting redhead’s HUGE rec is here, and there’s a bunch of resources here!

(As always, you can find all my fic recs in my FIC REC MASTERPOST)

- Feels Like Coming Home , by @phd-mama : The last thing Harry Styles expects when he’s hanging out at the Someday Cafe in Somerville one rainy October day is for his ex, Louis Tomlinson to walk through the door, but that’s exactly what happens. After a spectacularly ugly break-up three years prior, Harry hasn’t heard one word from Louis, and he’s moved on. Gotten over him. But having Louis back in his life, not to mention working at the restaurant where he’s a chef, isn’t easy, and the feelings that Harry thought he’d left turn out to be not so easily forgotten. This is a story about love and the power of forgiveness, and how the hard choices we make define us, and change our lives.

Larry ex to lovers AU (60k) : OOMMMGGGGGG this is the best angst fic I read for a long time !! Very well written, absolutely painful and beautiful, maybe some TW (read the tags) , but really really read this now. (kind of share that for the smut, awesome btw)

- When We Were Younger , by @waytoomanypeopleintheaddisonlee : About a week after Harry started visiting this particular chat room, he was watching some kid argue with the whole room about football, personally disinterested as he tipped a bag of crisps into his mouth. He happily chomped on the crumbs, taking a swig from a glass of Ribena to wash them down, glancing at the screen and very nearly spat the squash back out again. His heart was pounding wildly. The display icon of the argumentative newcomer had caught his eye, and not in a good way. He gulped as he clicked the picture, and when it popped up in full resolution, his heart nearly fell right out of his arse. - Sixteen year old Harry Styles’ world turns upside down when he logs on to gay teen chat to discover somebody has stolen his photos and used them as their own.

Larry Catfish AU (76k) : starting with teenage Harry and going on for a few years of a online/phone relationship. Very well done ! angsty and (obviously) full of phone sex :D (kind of share that)

- Save your loving arms for a rainy day , by @briannamarguerite : “What’s got your panties in a twist, then, pop star?” the man finally asked, his gaze returning to Louis’ face. Something pressed against Louis’ chest and for a moment Louis let himself wonder what it would be like to let all his secret spill out. To fall into the space between them and be devoured by this stranger. Terror mingled with bliss, tangling into a sharp throb he had to swallow hard against. “Absolutely nothing,” Louis said instead. “Happy days, yeah?”The man clicked his tongue once, a disappointed, wet tetch that Louis felt. Actually felt. “My mistake.”Louis turned desperate eyes on him, blinking too fast. He could see his own lashes flutter. “I’m living the dream, mate” he said and even he could hear the way his voice cracked along the edges. “What would I have to be upset about?”–Or the one where Louis is a pop star who has lost his voice and Harry helps him find it.

Larry famous-not famous AU (19k) : singer Louis and record-shop Harry, a bit angsty, some good smut (bottom Louis) and songwriting,  very well written !

- Your Love Was Handmade , by @inked-withlove : There must be a rule book describing in detail how you proceed from being best friends to lovers. That’s what Louis thinks. But maybe, there isn’t a need, Harry decides. Maybe you just follow your instinct and…run your finger down your best friend’s bare back. That should seal the deal for sure.Or, Harry and Louis are best friends who are also mutually pining, and when a work trip looms in to separate the two of them for three weeks, they finally get their shit together.

Larry BFF to lovers AU (5k) : BFFs who share a apartment  and are pining on each other are my kind of shit. Just a bit of smut.

- Perfect Storm , by @cherrystreet: What do you do when your best friend asks you and your (now) ex to be the best men at his destination wedding? You can either tell him the truth, tell him you’re not together anymore, and deal with the consequences, or you can pretend you’re still together and roll with it, just pray you don’t spiral. Fake it ‘til you make it. You know, for the sake of the wedding.Harry and Louis choose the latter.

Larry ex to lovers and fake relationship with a twist AU (80k) : angsty (but not THAT much), smutty (hello angry sex)(botyom Louis) and awesome :)

- You’re My Favorite Bird , by @supernope : Harry sets his hands on the counter and leans over them, looks Louis in the eye and says, “Louis, would you like to go bird watching with me?”Louis just blinks at him for a moment, like he’s not sure how to respond, then says, voice slow and unsure, “Is that a euphemism?”  Also known as: Harry is an ornithologist and Louis owns the camera repair shop where Harry gets his photos printed. Niall works for Louis, Liam works with Harry, and Zayn paints. There’s a cat, some camping, some bird watching, and obscene amounts of fluff.

Larry AU (33k) : Ornithologist-Photographer Harry, a lot of pining, some great smut (bottom Harry) , and kudos for the tattoos.

- Down For The Count And I’m Drowning And I’m Helpless  , by  patdkitten : “Staring costs extra, mate,” he says, perfectly cheeky. Harry didn’t know he found cheek sexy, but it’s definitely a turn on. He’s working up a response, turn on the Harry Styles trademark charm, when he hears a small whirring sound. Somehow, in his approach, Harry’d missed the ears perched on the barista’s head. Now that he’s aware of them, though, the dark brown fuzzy ears tipped in black twitch in his direction with another quiet whir. They remind him of the maid cafe he went to once in Japan, but while they hadn’t been attractive to him there, on this barista, they’re as sexy as the cheek.Yeah, Harry could definitely use a booty call. Maybe if he’s lucky, the barista’s getting off soon and would be interested in getting off with him…? He can dream, at least.— Harry Styles is an international pop star who suffers from insomnia, and Louis is the sassy little barista in fox ears and tail that won’t get out of Harry’s head. And the sexting is pretty damn great, too.

Larry Coffe Shop AU and Famous/not famous (5k): popstar Harry and sassy barista Louis, no smut.

- Love Is a Kitten from Hell      by  Anonymous : Louis Tomlinson passes himself off as an arrogant prick at his new school to hide the fact that he’s terrified of being bullied again. Just when he’s getting tired of putting up walls, he finds himself in a local pet shop where he finds a sanctuary playing with the kittens in the front window.Harry Styles is the popular football player who works at the pet shop, secretly watching the boy he thought was utterly unlikable prove him wrong. Partnered together for a class project, Harry gets more and more hints that Louis is actually someone worth getting to know. But the real question is, will Louis let Harry in?

Larry High school AU (8k) : cute and fluffy, with no smut.

reasons you should watch anne with an e
  • because even if it still doesn’t compare to the megan follows version, it’s still more anne shirley in your life and no one should argue with that
  • (by extension it’s also more gilbert blythe in your life and definitely no one should argue with that)
  • it portrays a fairly accurate visual of what a young person dealing with a traumatic past can look like
  • (this is why people keep calling it “dark and gritty”)
  • (like yes it’s dark to see an adult beating her)
  • (but also that’s kind of the point? her childhood was awful and then she got this haven of green gables?)
  • and then even though she has these moments of remembering how awful her past life was she’s still bright and cheery and full of hope and loves life and is all the anne things that we know and love and the realness of her past doesn’t detract from that it only enhances it
  • jerry is a sweet plumcake
  • everyone does such a good job with the acting thing like matthew doesn’t speak much but he can convey a book in one glance
  • speaking of matthew, he’s so sweet and gentle and shy it’s glorious. he’s younger than I was expecting but it works and also we have a glimpse into a romantic past (that never really got anywhere because of aforementioned shyness but it’s cute)
  • and speaking of romantic pasts we get marilla’s bit with gilbert’s dad and let me tell you she made a mistake turning him down because haaaaaaayyyyy
  • but the family dynamic relationships that are so essential to the story are there in all their glories
  • okay okay but I think my favorite part of this series that other adaptations haven’t really covered is diana’s friendship with the other girls
  • in the other adaptations it always seems to be like diana was also just waiting for a friend but this one had her already be friends with ruby and josie and so on
  • so when anne comes in diana loves her, yes, but we also see the tension she has to go through because her friends don’t and try to force her to choose
  • and it is FABULOUS
  • so there’s this whole schoolgirl group dynamic that really comes out
  • there’s also a schoolboy group dynamic which is important namely for gilbert’s sake
  • let’s talk about gilbert blythe and how great he is
  • he’s already a great character and this adaptation decides to follow him on solo adventures also so we get more insight into how caring and loving and loyal and compassionate and smart and perfect he is
  • gilbert blythe is perfect and no adaptation has failed me in it yet the end
  • (and even though I have minor qualms about where season two may go because they kinda changed up the book plot for some reason in the last two episodes I have no doubt they will bring it back around to the core story admirably but it’d just better be really quickly and not like a whole season tangent)
  • basically watch the series and then binge with the ‘85 version and just be happy to have as much anne of green gables in your life as life will give you
first date starters

  • “This was nice. Just a simple, sweet first date.”
  • “What, no good night kiss?”
  • “I don’t think I can date a Republican/Democrat.”
  • “It’s important to me that I date someone within the faith.”
  • “Want to play a game? Twenty Questions, or something?”
  • “Trust me – don’t want to go there.”
  • “We probably shouldn’t go there. My ex hangs out there sometimes and I think seeing them would kind of kill the mood.”
  • “I don’t date much, to be honest.”
  • “I hate to come on too strong, but I really, really like you.”
  • “Can I kiss you?”
  • “Why do you even like me? Is it the money?”
  • “Look, I gotta be honest – you were rude to the waiter, and that’s a serious turn-off.”
  • Whoa! That’s off-limits until, like, the tenth date.”
  • “Wow, you come on strong, don’t you?”
  • “I’m not making the greatest impression right now, am I?”
  • “Have you ever been here before?”
  • “I’ve never been here before!”
  • “I don’t normally meet up with people from Tinder/Grindr/OkCupid.”
  • “Where do you see yourself in five years?”
  • “That’s it! I’m leaving!”
  • “Hey! You’re on this date with me, remember?”
  • “I like you, but I think you’re hung up on your ex.”
  • “You haven’t let me get a word in edgewise all night!”
  • “Are you always this shy?”
  • “So, what do you do for a living?”
  • “Why did you even agree to go out with me?”
  • “I think I’m in love with you.”
Epic Movie (Re)Watch #127 - Chicago

Spoilers below.

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: No.

Format: Blu-ray

1) This film holds a lot of personal significance to me. I first saw it when I was 13 in one of the hardest months of my life. I was sick with pneumonia (diagnosed that day) and my great grandmother had just died, so the whole family was over because the funeral was that week. It was late and someone wanted to put in a movie so my dad pulls out Chicago. My mother was a little bit strangely strict about what PG-13 movies I could and could not see, usually forbidding more sexual stuff than anything else. So this was the most sexual film I had seen at the time and I had felt because of that, and the fact I was watching it with all the adults of my family, that I had been promoted to the adult table in some senses. I was really captivated by the music, the story, the moral ambiguity, it was just so different from anything else I’ve seen. I would not be Just Another Cinemaniac without Chicago. In some ways its as important to my film fan identity as Back to the Future.

2) The film opens with an extreme close up on Roxie’s (Renée Zellweger’s) eye, giving us our first inkling on how this is a musical in Roxie’s mind. But more on that later.

3) Note that we never see Velma Kelly’s (Catherine Zeta Jones’) face until she’s on stage giving a performance. This creates the feeling that Velma is ALWAYS putting on a performance.

4) Catherine Zeta Jones as Velma Kelly.

This film is pretty much perfectly cast, I think. 4 of its actors were nominated for Oscars, with another being nominated for a Golden Globe. Zeta Jones actually won her first (and to date only) Oscar for her role in this film, and for good reason to. She IS Velma Kelly. Zeta Jones is totally lost in the role, being able present all of Velma’s different qualities. Her showmanship, her rare vulnerability, her killer instinct, and it all just WORKS. You never EVER feel like you’re watching an actress. Zeta Jones IS Velma Kelly and as the first character we get a nice long look at, it is a great performance to start the film off with.

5) Hey, it’s Dominic West!

6) Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart.

Roxie is really the lead of this film, the character who we follow along and see the world through. The writing is really interesting. It would have been easy to start Roxie off as some innocent girl who made a mistake and goes on this big journey, but Roxie - despite whatever facade she puts up - is hardly some innocent girl. She readily and passionately has an affair even though her husband is a pretty nice guy (and not a “nice guy” where the guy acts nice but is really a jerk, but is actually pretty kind), murderers her lover just for being a jerk (there are better reasons to murderer someone), all while putting up this act like she did nothing wrong and is the victim. And I honestly think she believes it.

Renée Zellweger captures all these conflicting parts of Roxie’s character with true mastery. She also is able to handle Roxie’s transformation into a more cutthroat and determined creature with the same expertise. Like with Zeta Jones, you never feel like you’re watching Zellweger just giving a performance. She is - for all intents and purposes - Roxie. Originally Charlize Theron was cast in the part but after a change in directors there was a change in casting, and Zellweger had to learn signing and dancing for the film. It paid off wonderfully, as she was nominated for an Oscar for what is possibly her best role ever.

7) John C. Reilly as Amos.

John C. Reilly was also nominated for an Oscar for his performance in this film, and it is clear why. Amos is the only honestly good character in the film, and even then he is not without his flaws. He is not above losing his temper or being able to say when enough is enough when it comes to Roxie (you know, the woman who cheats on him, tries to have him take the fall for murder, and manipulates him in court just to get off). But - because this is Chicago - he’s the only main(ish) character to come out the other side being totally and utterly screwed over. There are some nice layers to Amos (mainly the loss of temper as mentioned above) and Reilly is just totally sincere in the part. It’s no wonder he was nominated for an Oscar.

8) This film sets itself apart from other movie musicals through the idea that the musical is all in Roxie’s head.

This creates a plausible explanation for why character’s burst into song and dance, allows the film to utilize some unique editing and art direction, and finally gives us a nice peek into Roxie’s head. This element allows us to see just how passionate Roxie is not only for the desire to perform but also the desire for fame. It also lets us know how she sees OTHER characters in the film (namely Billy Flynn, but more on that later). I think it is this key element that set the film up for such critical and artistic success, leading to its best picture win at the Oscars.

9) Danny Elfman provides a few nice instrumental pieces of score for the film which feel totally period Chicago. When you are adapting a popular musical such as Chicago adding extra music could be a challenge, but Elfman’s occasional score blends perfectly with the rest of the film.

10) Queen Latifah as Mama.

Latifah rounds out the quartet of Academy Award nominated performances with her portrayal as Matron Mama Morton. I think it’s Latifah’s best performance. She is able to portray Mama as cooperative and a bit soft spoken, but still someone who deals with no bullshit from her inmates. She is as manipulative as any other character in this film, if not as in big a way. You often hear her tell Roxie and Velma EXACTLY what they want to hear knowing that it will lead to a big pay day for her. It is a crafty role which Latifah plays well, and her introductory song “When You’re Good to Mama” shows off not only this characterization but Roxie’s perception of her quite well. It also allows for Latifah to show off her impressive singing chops.

11) The Cell Block Tango.

Where do I even begin with this number? It is by far the most iconic and best part of the entire film. The filmmakers are able to use the idea of “the musical in Roxie’s mind” to create a visually unique and compelling number which is edited together seamlessly with the “real world” of the Cook County jail Roxie finds herself in. Each of the “murderess mistresses” is given enough time to create a unique character and create a sense of the world Roxie (and the audience) finds herself in at this time. I particularly find the use of ribbons to illustrate blood/murder wildly effective, noting that Hunyak’s ribbon (the girl who constantly claims she is not guilty) is white whereas the others are red. This suggest that she is - in fact - innocent.

It is also worth noting that while the first story starts off very much “I’m guilty, here’s what happened”, that by the time we get to the inmate who claims her husband “ran into her knife” ten times the stories have become more and more claiming of legal innocence. This is a trend which continues through Velma’s story, where she claims she blacked out after seeing her husband & sister having sex and came to with blood on her hands. We as the audience have actually seen NOTHING which contradicts this story, further creating a nice sense of showmanship within the film.

12) Okay, I am all for good female friendships on film and television, but I would be lying if I said the catty relationship between Velma & Roxie was not entertaining. I think this is a byproduct from good writing (with what we know about these characters, how ELSE could their relationship go?) and the wildly captivating chemistry between Zeta Jones and Zellweger. Their relationship is one of the key sources of conflict throughout the film and with those two actresses it just WORKS.

13) Richard Gere as Billy Flynn.

The number in Roxie’s head which introduces us to Flynn - “All I Care About” - is a pitch perfect example of expectations vs. reality. After what she’s heard about Billy (which isn’t much mind you), Roxie expects him to be this honest to goodness lawyer who only wants to save women from dying in by the noose in Chicago. What we get however is the craftiest, most manipulative skeeze ball in the film. So why is he so damn likable? Who is he comparable to the roguish Han Solo? Why do we root for him? I think that is all in Gere’s performance. It would be easily to play him as a disgusting slime ball but there is a charisma that Gere brings which I think elevates the character and the film. Originally offered to Hugh Jackman & John Travolta at different parts, Gere’s chemistry with the rest of the cast is great and although the film didn’t land him an Oscar nomination he did receive a Golden Globe for his work.

14) I think it’s worth noting that Roxie does not take too long to adapt to prison. Again evidence that she’s not as innocent as she wants people to think.

15) “We Both Reached For The Gun”

I can never tell if this or “Razzle Dazzle” is my favorite number in the film, but I think for a visual standpoint it HAS to be this. This is once again where the conceit of “the musical in Roxie’s head” benefits the film GREATLY. The imagery of Roxie being a dummy operated by Billy to sell her story not reflects on their relationship in an incredibly clear way (as well as how Billy is literally using people) but also is just visually fascinating. Zellweger is a lot of fun during the number, and if you ever want to know why this film won the Oscar for best editing the year it was nominated just watch this scene.

16) The song “Roxie” when Roxie is at the top of her game is a great character study. It goes even deeper into Roxie’s desire for fame and admiration, a key quality in her character that drives pretty much all her actions throughout the film. It features gorgeous cinematography with its use of mirrors and presents us with Roxie’s ideal self. This ideal self is not a good person (not necessarily), but someone who is adored by her audience. If that doesn’t speak to who Roxie is as a character I don’t know what does.

17) A film is told in cuts, as in cutting from one moment to the next in as clean and clear a way as possible.

Velma [after Mama suggests she kisses Roxie’s ass to maintain some position]: “Over my dead body.”

[We cut to the mess hall, where Velma is seen smiling at Roxie]

Velma: “Mind if I join you?”

18) “I Can’t Do It Alone”

Up until this point we have not seen Velma truly vulnerable. We have peeked more into who Roxie is as a character than who Velma is. That all changes with this number, which shows us that Velma is just as desperate for the spotlight as Roxie is. She NEEDS to stay relevant, she NEEDS the fame and the admiration, and only when it was too late did she realize that the murder of her sister took away one of the key things that made her so desirable to the world in the first place. This song is a fun number that adds nice depth to Zeta Jones’ character and shows off just how talented she can be with Velma’s vulnerability.

19) My heart broke a little when I saw Velma’s face after Roxie’s rejection of her.

And in that moment and that moment alone, I think I shipped the two of them together.

20) Lucy Liu’s glorified cameo as Kitty, the newest jazz killer in Chicago and the one who threatens to take away Roxie’s fame, is a perfect example of how easily Roxie can fall. But here’s the thing, Roxie is smarter than she appears. And more manipulative. It is her greatest strength that people underestimate her, so when she “faints” and mentions “the baby” everyone - from Velma to Billy - are all surprised by her.

21) I was a naive 13 year old. I didn’t understand that the doctor who said he’d testify that Roxie was pregnant had very clearly slept with her (hence Billy’s remark about his fly being open).

22) “Mister Cellophane”

Somehow this song not only shows us how ROXIE perceives her estranged husband as being someone who’s not worth caring about, but also makes Amos into a sympathetic character. He is not particularly whiny about the fact that he’s oft forgotten, he’s just a little sad about it. Reilly’s performance in the song is filled with soft sorrow and vulnerability we don’t always get to see from the actor, an honesty which carries the entire song on its back. It is a truly worthy number to be included with the rest of the film, with its Chaplin like art style and Reilly’s vocals, and I’m glad it made the cut.

23) In a lot of ways Chicago is a noir comedy musical. I say this for two reasons: Amos being kinda screwed over at the end, and the fact that Hunyak - the only innocent girl in the jail - is the only who is hanged. This also reminds Roxie of the fact that she IS on trial for murder and of the fatal consequences she could face.

24) “Razzle Dazzle”

If “We Both Reached for the Gun” is my favorite number in the film from a stylistic standpoint, then “Razzle Dazzle” is probably my favorite from a thematic one. Gere expresses Flynn’s belief that the courts are just a circus, simply entertainment to be manipulated, in a way which is just that: entertaining. I am always totally taken in by the song through its themes of craftiness, playful melody, and fun visuals. It is just a wonderful number which I love watching again and again.

25) If “Razzle Dazzle” doesn’t tell you how Billy sees the court system than this line will:

Hell, the non-musical court room scenes are in a lot of ways more dramatic than the musical ones.

26) This film had a song which was shot but not included in the final cut, one sung between Mama and Velma called “Class”. Still found on the movie’s soundtrack, “Class” had the pair discuss how the world seems to have gone to shit and how no one has any class. It was cut both for pacing issues and - largely - because it did not fit the theme of “the musical in Roxie’s head”. Roxie was at the court house and these two started singing after hearing about what was going on over the radio. It is a wonderful song but I think the film works better without it featured.

27) It took absolutely no time at all for Roxie not to matter. The press didn’t even want her picture after the verdict was read. Another killer, another star.

28) The final number of the film is a dual thing. The first of which is Roxie singing the song “Nowadays” on her own at an audition. The song is sad, somber, and lacks umph. This causes the directors to pass on Roxie. But when Velma and Kelly work together? When they’re able to work with their heat and chemistry and put on a duet of “Nowadays”? The umph is back and it is a wonderful number to end the film on!

I’m obviously biased through my own personal experience with the film, but I think Chicago is quite possibly the best movie musical of the 21st century (yes, even better than Les Miserables). The acting is incredible across the board, with Catherine Zeta Jones and Renée Zellweger being the obvious standouts. The concept of “the musical in Roxie’s head” allows for a musical which is unique and supports a wonderful art style. The songs are fun, the pacing and editing are great, and it’s a technical spectacle in its subtletly. Just a wonderfully entertaining film I think everyone should watch.

Top 5 Moments of 2.11

Obviously I’m still me so most of these will be about Jace but I’ll throw in other stuff too.

5. The Introduction of Sebastian: I really loved everything Seb this episode. Will Tudor is amazing & a great addition to the show. He was very heroic saving Izzy. At first he seem harmless. He looked like he genuinely wanted to help Izzy but at the episode went out you totally got some creepy vibes that that their was something beneath the good guy act. I really can’t wait to see how the character unfolds.

4. Parabatai Training: This scene was so much fun. Alec was smiling. Jace was smiling. I liked the fun jabbing at each other. You can really tell this is something that happens on a regular basis. This is one of my favorite relationships on the show & I really hope we continue to see fun light moments like this between these two,

3. Jace’s Breakdown: So finally Jace just let it go. I really like that it was Clary that pushed this forward after the reveal. Clary & Alec had both asked Jace if he was okay early in the episode & he just shrugged them off. But he was finally able to let all of that pain out & it was so fucking sad. I am so happy Alec found him & was able to be there. I was a beautiful parabatai moment.

2. Clace’s Final Convo: So at the very end of the episode after the shock & the hurt of Jace lying wears off Clary & Jace have a little talk. I absolutely loved this scene. As much as Clary wants to think this does not affect her relationship with Simon you can totally see that it does. Clary is already conflicted. It was written all over her face but neither one of them are ready to say the words. Then when Jace said what ignited his rune was her lying there. My feeels were fucking gone. I really like how they are starting things with Clace. You can already feel the tension & I cannot wait to see where we go from here.

1. Jace gets his power: What an epic fucking scene. Everyone on the ground & Jace’s rune just lights up & HIS EYES TURN GOLD. It was everything. I am so glad we actually had the angel blood affect Jace & he was more powers then jumping high. Like really. This is one of my favorite scenes of the entire series. Jace is a badass & I love it. The effects were great. I just loved it.

About Zutara.
  • I AM of Zutara hardcore fan and started ATLA for them (and Toph) but I love Aang! He’s one of my favorite character of the show! He’s pacifist, kind and innocent. He’s a kid forced to fight in a war he doesn’t want to be a part of. I actually feel extremely sad for him. The most stupid thing in this ? People are bashing Aang and say he doesn’t understand Katara’s pain about her mother’s murder… Uh… Yes he does. His entire people has been killed. We are talking about a genocide. How does he not understand, again? He is a pacifist, of course revenge is foreign to him and he doesn’t understand it, but he understands her sadness. He, by the way, handles it pretty well. He has no family left. Katara has Sokka. You need to stop this hate.
  • As for Mai… Meh. I won’t lie. I don’t like her. But not because Zutara is not canon. I don’t like her because she and Zuko are in an abusive relationship, and she is the one who abuses Zuko. Because, I’m sorry, but she is. She treats him like a slave at the beach party (go get me some food), she throws things at him (and not in a playful way. I wouldn’t condamn her if they were having a pillow fight because everyone loves pillow fights), she actually acts like a bitch when he tries to talk to her about his scar and the fact that is fucking traumatized by what happened to him. Let’s do a little genderbent. Had Zuko been a girl and Mai a man, everyone would be trashing this ship. Serioulsy, their relationship is almost saying that men can’t be abused. Which is bullshit. One of my friends have been abused by his girlfriend, and I can tell you it was hard for him to trust another girl after that. So no. It’s not a healthy relationship.
  • But, before this poor excuse of a relationship happened, I liked Mai. She was a cool bad guy, and actually made me laugh a few times. My opinion did change when I realized she abused her boyfriend, but, had she never done that, she would have stayed one of my favorite antagonist.
  • What I’m trying to say is that it’s not because your ship isn’t canon that you can just go and hate characters for this reason. If you don’t like them, fine. But find yourself a real reason… Otherwise, It’s stupid, childish and immature. Jeez, it pisses me off! I know Zutara was fucking forshadowed and I WAS cheering for them during the entire show, but I still love Aang! (And I used to like Mai).

So I watched another episode of my new favorite Disney channel show Andi Mack yesterday and it featured:

–a character calmly and gently telling a friend she has a crush on, “Hey, I’ve noticed that there’s a dynamic in our relationship where I make an effort to take an interest in the things that are important to you and do things I don’t want to do because you ask me to, and you don’t really do the same for me.  So, no hard feelings, but I don’t want to be friends anymore.”  Like, holy crap, I will take that over every token girls-can-do-anything-boys-can-do sitcom episode in the world.

–at the end of the episode they showed footage of a bunch of middle school kids in a room recapping the episode and talking about what they thought about it and it was the most adorable thing I have ever seen.

–also my gay wife, Bex, was in the episode, which was nice

Jared having an s/o who's secretly a memelord??? Like their meme skills are too dank

This was so fun to write there’s so much capitalization in this

- Okay so before the relationship even starts Jared asserts himself as Champion Memer
- And you’re kind of like “okay whatever you say lmao”
- You two have the most memorable relationship. You talk in memespeak. You send each other memes at 3 am. You make memes about each other. It’s pretty great and ultimately such a positive relationship.
- Don’t tell me that memes can’t help communication bc it can and it does in this relationship
- Anyways one day you notice that Jared sends you meme spam (which is not rare) from a certain meme page
- Then one day he brings it up again and is like “this is my new favorite meme account it’s the best look at it”
- Naturally, it happens to be your meme account
- At first you think that he’s just being cute bc he knows it’s yours but then it dawns on you that he has NO IDEA ITS YOU which is HILARIOUS
- You start vague memeing about him and he sends you all the memes like “o shit this is me lmao” AND STILL HAS NO CLUE ITS YOU
- One day you feel kind of bad and you’re like “ok I should probably tell him” so you tell him and HE DOESNT BELIEVE YOU
- “Babe, I love you and your memes, but these memes are just too dank. The dankest of them all.”
- You post a meme about how he doesn’t believe it’s your account and then he comes running into your room like “ok I believe you now”
- Literally this whole experience just made him love you more since his girlfriend is the true memelord

“Go for it, bro!”

 "Wow! Everything’s changing!“

"Who’s terrible idea was this?"

"No… how long was I out?!”

"You know I can’t handle it when you cry like that.“

 "Do you remember this place?"

"I get mad at myself! It’s what I do!”

"I’ll fight you, and show you how bad I am!“

"You want to pretend that none of this ever happened. You think that I’m just a big mistake!”

“What’s a chicken?"

"Oh! I get the joke now!"

"You are an experience!"

"You were the one good thing that came out of this mess. I always thought you were proud of that."

“It’s too late! I don’t believe you anymore!”

“Isn’t it remarkable? This world is full of so many possibilities.”

“How are y’all doin’ tonight?”

“Yeah, I could rave to this.”

“Why do you look like that? Why are you so weak?”

“I don’t get what you’re planning, but look! Your base is taken! Your armies are ruined! You have failed!”

“STOP SINGING!”

“Looks like another waste of my time.”

“They kept you prisoner. They used you. This is your chance to take revenge! Come on… Just say yes.”

“You’re pointing that shield the wrong way. She’s the one you should be afraid of.”

“You can’t lie to me. I’ve seen what you’re capable of. I thought I was a brute, but you… you’re a monster.”

“It’ll be better this time. I’ve changed. You’ve changed me. I’m the only one who can handle your kind of power.”

“Please understand, if we lose, we’ll be killed. And if we win, we can never go home…”

“I thought… haven’t we… is this not how it works?”

“Who cares about how I feel? How you feel is bound to be much more interesting.”

“But you are supposed to change! You’re never the same, even moment to moment you’re allowed and expected to invent who you are.”

“Arrggh! Why do you keep destroying my things?!”

“Go ahead, wreck this place! See if I care, I already got what I needed!”

“You really think this is the end? HAHAHA! This… This is only the beginning! …Of my escape!”

“Oh my stars, you’re gonna harvest me?!”

“I’m gonna die here.”

“Yes! Feel my unbridled rage!”

“I can tell you with certainty that there are things on this planet worth protecting!”

“I’ve grown accustomed to this place, and I could probably fix the hole that I made with my giant robot.”

“What’s the problem? You’re the one getting all the good stuff! You’ve got the propeller and paint cans on your side!”

“H-2-Oh my GOSH!”

“I carried you while you took a nap.”

“I… I thought violence would be the answer.”

“You have a lobster on your butt.”

“Yes, the children are playing swords. Sorry, playing with swords.  They are bleeding.  Oh no, they are dead. Don’t call again.  …Sorry, I panicked.”

“That’s a lie. Your middle name is cutie pie.”

“It was a maelstrom of destruction and death.”

“But I think you’re just mad ‘cause you’re single.”

“Love at first sight doesn’t exist. Love takes time, and love takes work. At the very least you have to know the other person… And you literally have no idea who or what I am.”

“Get open, get honest, invent yourselves together. That’s fusion.”

“I’m not as strong as you think. I-I fell apart over this…”

“You’ll know when I’m joking.”

“I blame the cows.”

“You don’t understand! Just leave me alone.”

“I just want to go home.”

“Let’s stay on this miserable planet, together!”

“I’m done being everyone’s prisoner! Now you’re MY prisoner! And I’m never letting you go!”

“Can’t you see? I can’t stop, not for a second.”

“For a moment, I really felt like things were different, but they’re not. No matter where I go, I’m trapped.”

“I really thought I would be living alone here.”

“Don’t put me in charge! Oh, sorry. I mean, y-you shouldn’t trust me with the boat.”

“Thanks, but I’m not putting that on my body.”

“What we had wasn’t healthy. I never want to feel like I felt with you. Never again! So just go!”

“I was terrible to you. I liked taking everything out on you. I needed to. I-I hated you. It was bad!”

“You can’t outrun me, we both have short legs!”

“Yeah, yeah, don’t forget: reckless, vulgar, loud-mouthed. That’s just what makes me so awesome!”

“In the ring, nobody can tell me what to do! And if they try, I HIT 'EM IN THE FACE WITH A CHAIR!”

“You can’t let anyone make you feel like garbage.”

“I swallowed a rock.”

“I’mma win a airplane!”

“Are you trying to kill him faster?”

“I can fit! Which way to the baby war?”

“Now we’re gonna bury you 'til you’ve learned your lesson!”

“I’m not gonna let you stand there and remind me about everything I hate about myself!”

“I never asked to be made!”

“I’m just an embarrassment to you!”

“Oh man! I think my favorite round thing was in there!”

“I need everyone’s constant approval! I need to loquaciously converse so I can show off how smart I am.”

“Humans should just stop wearing clothes… be a lot funnier.”

“If you’re trying to flush yourself down the toilet, it won’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried.”

“Homegirl knows we’re gonna beat her into a pancake.”

“You didn’t need me at all…”

“Care to explain what one of my swords was doing in your room?”

“We want to stop all wrestling everywhere! Are you going to let us destroy all wrestling? Eheheh.”

“Humans find such fascinating ways to waste their time.”

“Is water just hydrogen and oxygen “mashed together”?”

“Well, that’s perfect, because I don’t want to go with grammatically incorrect people anyway.”

“You have to feel like yourself! Sweet and considerate, and only occasionally obnoxious!”

“Just today you were crying about snakes.”

“There are… different ways of being strong.”

“I’m so sorry… I almost got us killed..!”

“Humans just lead short, boring, insignificant lives, so they make up stories to feel like they’re a part of something bigger. They want to blame all the world’s problems on some single enemy they can fight, instead of a complex network of interrelated forces beyond anyone’s control.”

“I like to watch you sleep sometimes. And by sometimes, I mean often.”

“Everything I ever did, I did for her. And now she’s gone. But I’m still here.”

“That could have gone… a lot worse.”

“You always say you’ll be the crocodile, but you never commit!”

“Have the shirts come to life and possessed the bodies of their wearers?!”

“Do you understand that cartoon show?”

“I don’t get tired; I get results.”

“I just wanted to share a few more victories with you!”

“Look! I was right! My plan worked perfectly.”

“Oh, what’s 200 years between friends?”

“Please! Tell me! How can I make you forgive me!?”

“Confident and secure and complete… You’re perfect… You’re the perfect relationship… You’re always together… I just—I wanted to be a part of that…”

“We leave for one second and everything goes off the rails!”

“It’s fine, it’s fine, we’ll build it bigger, stronger, we’ll add SEATBELT!”

“Ah, sunset. My favorite time of the day… The sun goes down and the second sun gets bigger and bigger in the sky…”

“I can’t just start listening now, I’d be lost! Just like my pants…”

“THAT’S UNUSUAL!!”

“Will you help me into my Birthday Suit?!”

“Try to act like a rich duck.”

“Fire Salt! Burn! Burn people!”

“None of you are the handsome one! I’M the handsome one!”

“I’m gonna bring the ocean back… or get really thirsty trying.”

“I have to protect you, what if somehow you get hurt? What do I do? I don’t want that for you.”

“Pizza rain! …But no pizza clouds…”

“You gotta take this online quiz: “Which Crying Breakfast Friend Are You?”!”

“Are you insecure about your relationships and how you’re perceived by other people?”

“If you’re the one protecting me… Then who’s the one protecting you!?”

“Some day soon we may be fighting some really bad guys, and when that day comes, I wanna fight with you! Together! So please… Won’t you share this jam with me?”

“Wow! You’re so articulated!”

“Home’s been awful! Here’s been awful! I thought you wanted to have a fun time but– Everyone’s been acting awful too! It - It just came with us. I don’t understand! Is it… is it me..?”

“We found a seeeecret way to track you, and we’ll never tell you how even if you ask nicely. MYAH.”

“Awwww! You’re like… an angry little slice of pie!”

“Wait! I have a better idea that doesn’t involve destroying the house!”

“That isn’t a very sound business practice.”

“Sweet, two doughnuts! One for me and one… for… uh, me.”

“I thought this was a dance party. Why isn’t anyone else dancing.”

“I don’t wanna hear anything you say, unless it’s “sorry”.”

“You’re choosing to take it personally.”

“Can’t you see I’m completely engulfed with rage.”

“But we made him feel like it was his fault. I keep looking into the future, where all of this has been solved, as if it doesn’t matter how you feel in the present. No wonder… why you think I don’t care!”

“You honestly think I’m not upset about what happened? I just wanted to do the right thing…”

“This is… not what I saw! I don’t know what happened, I-”

“All I wanna look at is you.”

The Wedding Job

I love season one of Leverage so much because while we’re slowly building on Nate and Sophie’s backstory through bits of conversation we’re also starting out on the journey that is Parker and Hardison (and also Parker and Hardison and Eliot).

The Wedding Job (S1E07) is one of my favorite Leverage episodes is terms of Nate and Sophie because we get more than a little from Sophie in this episode in terms of how she feels and has felt about Nate for possibly ten to eight years (give or take).

Toward the beginning of the episode is perhaps one of my favorite lines of dialogue from Leverage, when Sophie is talking about their potential client and how she’s having to wait for her husband to be freed from jail while not so subtly implying how she’s felt about having to wait in regards to the relationship she wants with Nate. You can tell her speech hits the mark by the look on his face and ends up staying with them throughout the remainder of the episode.

One of the reasons I love Nate and Sophie so much are because they aren’t a will they/won’t they couple, they’re an eventuality. You know it’s going to happen from their first scene in The Nigerian Job (S1E01).

Nate’s speech later on in the episode when he’s playing the vicar calls back somewhat to his conversation with Sophie in The Miracle Job (S1E04) when she tells him that what happens next is up to him.

“And some people should consider that other people, you know, they don’t, uh, maybe they need a little time, you know, before they start dating some people again and-and-and start committing and…”

We already know that Sam has been gone for a little over two years at this point in time, but what we don’t know is how long Nate and Maggie lasted afterward. We meet Nate when he’s still attempting to drown his problems instead of picking up the broken pieces, which is why I think it makes his speeches to Sophie in season one all the more special because he’s still wounded but it’s so clear that he has strong, dominating feelings for her.

And I’m 100% sure that the tears in Sophie’s eyes during his speech cement the fact that she has the same overwhelming feelings for him.

Just... Ianto

So I was rewatching To the Last Man (as one does), and it came to The Kiss, and I just…..

I’m really sad we didn’t get more scenes like this because:

It’s so sweet??? Because Jack’s kinda mopey, but he’s also flirting, and Ianto’s not having any of that, so he just goes straight in for the kiss, and that’s arguably my favorite scene in the entire show.

Ianto’s so assertive here, which is great because I feel like fandom sometimes makes him really passive in the relationship, but he’s also trying to help Jack, because Jack’s obviously struggling with something. And it’s also one of the best Janto moments there is — other than Jack asking him out or the pterodactyl scene (and a few others) — and Ianto’s the one initiating it!

Just… Ianto.

There is a girl at work that just found out she’s pregnant. She’s close 30 years of age, and she has a stable relationship with a great guy. But she struggles with bipolar disorder and severe OCD. Both have recently gotten worse, and she’s going through medication changes. She feels so sick and just looking at her, you can tell she’s depressed about the news. She’s deathly afraid that she’s not going to like the baby and that she’ll feel completely emotionally detached from it. She’s also deathly afraid that her illnesses could get worse postpartum. She is one of my favorite girls to work with, and I absolutely hate seeing her like this. If y'all wouldn’t mind praying for her, I’d love it so much. Her name is Mary. Thank you!

sgdubois  asked:

so can you explain your way of being a sugar baby? i always thought it was just someone to have on the side and get money from in exchange for sex or other things similar but it seems like you have full on relationships with them

So, when I’m on Tinder I’m scouting for someone that looks rich. I talk them up like normal dating but also inquiring about their life to see where I can fit in at. Are they traveling a lot, do they have many homes, even a favorite restaurant can tell me a lot. Once I pretend like I’m really into them , I will start my process of crying about some bill , or how I lost a lot of weight and none of my clothes fit and I want to look good for him, or how passionate I am about finishing school and tuition is getting in the way. A real man that likes you and has the money to help you , will want to come in and want to save you. If they come from SA then I’m straight talking about an allowance. I wouldn’t say relationships but my approach is definitely normal dating then crying damsel in distress..

Think about it like this , if you were a man would you want to help a girl that was ambitious , education-hungry and had a good head on their shoulders , or a girl that’s hoeing for money online. Men that have money doesn’t mean they like the idea of a sugar baby and that’s what I’m trying to take advantage of, some of the men I talk to would run if they knew I was a sugar baby! Hope this helps. 05-17-17
