Vision Boards: Making Your Dreams Come to Life

#BrownBeauties life is all about reaching your goals, but having a daily dose of inspiration can make you work harder to reach those goals. Vision boards or inspiration boards are a great tool to help envision your set goals on a daily basis. I’m the type of person who needs the visual stimulation to remind me of what I’m working so hard to accomplish. Whether it’s a picture of a family member, images of healthy food, or my favorite quote, it’s good to always have small reminders to keep you pushing forward.

What makes vision boards so wonderful is the ability to tailor the board to your individual likes and preferences. There is no one way to make your board; this project requires creative juices and an optimistic mind. I believe every brown beauty should create a vision board because it is therapeutic to set goals and establish a pathway to accomplish them. My fiancée and I created a vision board to help us focus on getting in shape for our wedding but also to maintain a healthy lifestyle within our house hold far beyond our wedding date.

My Personal Vision Board

  • Cork Board
  • Old magazines/pictures/quotes
  • Tape/Push pins
  • Scrapbook Paper (optional use for a pretty background)

#BrownBeauties bring your goals and dreams to life with a vision board. Don’t forget to send pictures of your final results.

#BrownBeauty Tip Tuesday: Why Tape is our BFF

Greetings #BrownBeauties!

Whether you want to call it a cat-eye, winged eye, or flick, this eye elongating makeup trend is undeniably popular. It doesn’t matter if you’re at the coffee shop, with your friends for a night out or daydreaming in the middle of class. The cat-eye is everywhere. It’s an easy way to add a fun twist, (ala a bright summer-esque cat-eye) or instant sophistication (via a simple black cat-eye paired with a red lip) to any makeup look. Now, if you’re anything like me, whenever you attempt a cat-eye the majority of your time is spent either trying to get the perfect ‘flick’ or ‘wing’ or fiddling with your eyeliner until both eyes appear symmetrical. Luckily for you, I have a tip that will cut back on all the stress and give your poor peepers a bit of break.

One word: Tape.

Yes, tape. Not the grey industrial kind used for packaging, but good old scotch tape. Bear with me ya’ll, it’s going to make sense soon. All you’ll need is some scotch tape (small strips that extend as far as you want your flick or wing to be), your eyeliner and eyeliner brush of choice, and a bit of imagination (throw some patience in there for good measure).

1. Place your tape strip beneath your bottom eyelashes, arranging the piece of tape diagonally so that one of the edges (the edge facing your eye) goes along the outer-v of your eye.

2. Begin your eyeliner routine as normal, the tape will serve as a guide for the wing or flick. Extend the eyeliner to the edge of the tape, going over it if necessary. The best part about this is that you can be as messy or crooked (or uncoordinated) as you want. Any eyeliner (or shadow) that ends up on the strip of tape will be removed when it’s peeled off.

3.  Peel the tape off carefully, our eyes are sensitive and usually the first areas to show signs of aging, we should always give them a little extra TLC. Try testing your strips out on clothing or fabric to remove some of the stickiness. When the tape is peeled off you should be left with a perfect cat or winged eye. Practice makes perfect, but once you get this trick down it’ll be a breeze.

Simple enough, right?

Test it out and tell me how it went. Looking forward to hearing from you winged divas.

I am notorious for watching movies years after they’ve premiered. For example, I didn’t see Boyz in the Hood, until I was a freshman in college. I also have another confession. I’ve never seen the original version of Steel Magnolias. Yes, yes, I know it’s a classic. It just never made it to the top of my to-do list. Apparently Lifetime, had it at the top of their agenda, and it certainly paid off! It was the third most-watched broadcast in the history of the company! I’m beyond proud of the #BrownBeauties who made history with this adaptation.

First off, let me just say that it was smothered with Southern belle flavor, and served with sweet tea in a mason jar! That’s how down home and country it was. Being from Texas, and right on the edge of Louisiana, I enjoyed it. It was slightly retro, but still managed to feel modern. I thought the relationship between Queen Latifah’s character, M’lynn, and Condola Rashad’s character, Shelby, was touching to watch. Oh, you’ve never heard of Condola Rashad? Google her! She’s all over the theatre circuit, and she even has a Tony award nomination under her belt. That alone gets her 2 snaps and a hair flip! Of course Queen Latifah was a joy to watch. I thought it was interesting to see her play this role. Since it was a TV film, there really wasn’t enough time to see their storyline develop the way it should.

Ok, let’s get to the good stuff! I appreciated that the Soul Train line at the wedding reception, featured The Wobble. I died when that song came on! Very modern indeed. Good job Lifetime. That’s a sign that they’re very much in tune with their viewers. I loved the magnolias floating in the pool! Did you see them? It made me want to start planning a wedding tomorrow! They were so beautiful! I loved Phylicia Rashad’s character, Clairee. She really capitalized on the classic beauty shop gossiping. She kept me entertained start to finish. Jill Scott’s character, Truvy, really stood by her man. True to Southern heritage, she was soft spoken, polite, and didn’t leave home without Spanx! Alfre Woodard shined, as Ouiser. Although, I’ve seen her play roles like this before, she was perfect. Adepero Oduye, Annelle, was such a natural beauty! She recently graced the cover of Vanity Fair, and she is stunning! I was glad that one of the cast members was natural. That speaks volumes, especially in a film that plays out inside a salon.

SPOLILER ALERT: When Shelby died, I cried. Don’t repeat that to anyone. I don’t usually get sentimental when watching television. The writers were able to make that scene extremely personal and beautiful. That was probably when they finally won me over. I’m a very harsh critic. But I must say, I enjoyed it. I felt as if, it could have been a little deeper. I couldn’t help but feel like the storyline was being rushed. But in all fairness, it did have to remain within the time constraints of a television film.  I’m actually glad that I’ve never seen the original version. I didn’t have anything to compare it to, and I didn’t pre-judge.

If you haven’t viewed this classic already, make sure you don’t miss the next airing. There’s an underlying message that you can’t miss. In one of my favorite scenes, Shelby says, “I would rather have 30 minutes of something wonderful, then a lifetime of nothing special.” I can’t think of a better way, to live your life.

Now I want to hear what you think! Let us know at My BrownBox, how you think it stacked up next to the original version!

Brown Beauties Guide to: Living Your Best Life

There are few celebrities who I can honestly say that I admire. Oprah Winfrey is among the select few. When she speaks I listen. I make it my business to try and absorb every little piece of wisdom that travels out of her mouth and implement it into my daily life. She has had several quotable quotes over the years but one that seems to remain with me is “strive to live your best life”. I interpret this to mean – guiding and living your life in such a way that blessings will continuously present themselves in your path. I know, I know, easier said than done, right? Well, trust me I am right there with you but if Ms. Winfrey “guru of all gurus” says it produces positive results, I’m all in. So, #BrownBeauties let’s begin anew today and strive to live our best lives!  How? Let’s let Oprah’s words lead the way -

  • “Be more splendid, more extraordinary. Use every moment to fill yourself up.” — Oprah
  • “When your to-do list has you coming undone, you have to step back and come back to center. Without a connection to something that is real, you will lose your way.” — Oprah
  •  “Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance.” — Oprah
  • “I believe that everyone is a keeper of a dream - and by tuning into one another’s secret hopes, we can become better friends, better partners, better parents, and better lovers.” — Oprah
  • “Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure”. — Oprah
  • “I believe that one of life’s greatest risks is never daring to risk.” — Oprah
  • “The whole point of being alive is to evolve into the complete person you were intended to be.” — Oprah
  • “Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” — Oprah
  • “If you want your life to be more rewarding, you have to change the way you think.” — Oprah
  • “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.” — Oprah
  • “Use what you have to run towards your best - that’s how I now live my life.” — Oprah
  • “I really believe when you give to other people, you give to yourself.” — Oprah

Feel Hot In The Cold: Cool Weather Accessories

Just because it’s cold outside and you’re wearing 2000 layers, it doesn’t mean that you have to trade in your style for warmth. There are several options to keep your body toasty while keeping you cute.

You can’t go wrong with a pop of color or a daring print on your hands. Whether it be knit or leather, a colored/printed glove can breathe some life into the sometimes boring Fall/Winter outerwear. Adding a cutesy bow couldn’t hurt either!

Scarves are a favorite of mine. They instantly add a little something extra to an outfit – a certain sophistication, if you will. So, I make sure to stock up on several varieties for the cooler months to spice up my outerwear. The other good thing about scarves is that even if you take your coat off you can still hang onto your scarf and wear it with your outfit underneath.

Heavy Socks

This has become my new favorite with my rustic combat boots but they work with any style plus the heaviness keeps your toesies warm!

Printed hats

I tend to shun hats for as long as I can to avoid “hat hair” but with colder temps comes snowfall which equals moisture which equals “a not so good hair day” So, why not look cute while braving the weather?

#BrownBeauties, what are your favorite cool weather accessories?

BrownBeauties Guide to: Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

BrownBeauties Guide to: Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Hey BrownBeauties, hope all is well! As the holidays come to a close, many of us are left regretting what we ate or have made it a resolution to get into better shape for the New Year.  Hey, don’t beat yourself up about it! I for instance, took eating as a much as I could as a personal challenge this season. But guess what, who cares! I allowed myself to truly enjoy everything the holiday season had to offer – Family, Friends and Fantastic Food and you should’ve too! But if you are looking to get healthy and in shape after all of the festivities, I’ve got just the thing.  I’ve decided to pick the brain of my good friend Jessica Glenn who is a Certified Nurse Midwife who definitely knows a thing or two about being healthy. When she’s not delivering babies or you know, saving the world, she somehow manages to squeeze in a workout while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I thought her words of wisdom would be perfect for you because like Jessica, many of you are #BrownBeauties on the go and staying healthy is often the last thing on your to-do list of many things to do.  So for those of you who need a little help – here’s your guide for living your best HEALTHY life.

1. WOOSAH!

Decrease stress by reading, exercise, prayer, or yoga. Decreasing stress helps us in all areas of our lives. Certain benefits include better sleep and less emotional eating.

2. Write it down!

Research shows that people who write down what they eat are more likely to maintain and lose weight. Keep a journal or try a smart phone app like Lose It or Weight Watchers.

3. Slow and steady wins the race!

If you’re a person who has little or no exercise experience, starting off with too many workouts may lead to you stopping, so start off slow with 1-3 workouts per week to build your stamina. Remember, consistency creates results…KEEP GOING! If you are too busy but want to squeeze in a workout, try eating at your desk and take a walk for lunch. Walking for just 30 mins can burn about 120-220 calories.

4. Eat your fruit and veggies, young lady!

Not only do you get necessary nutrients, but consuming more fruits and vegetables leaves you satisfied and you are less likely to over eat the foods that you are trying to avoid. Remember to try and eat lots of different colors. This will increase the amount of vitamins and antioxidants you consume.

5. Don’t get lost in the monotony of your day to day

Just because you’re at work 8+ hours per day doesn’t mean it is “your everything”. Get a hobby! Go home and leave work at the door. Plan and use your vacation days. Start playing a sport you know nothing about. Get lost somewhere. Do anything but DO NOT go to work, come home, go to sleep, wake up, and repeat it all over again for goodness sake!

#Brownbeauties, will you be using Jessica’s tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle? As a busy woman, how do you manage to stay in shape and healthy?

Mix & Match: Mastering the Art of Pattern Mixing

Fashion is all about taking risks, making statements and showcasing individuality. For Instance, mixing patterns is a great way to display edginess and personal style. At first it might seem a little crazy because we are always taught to wear articles of clothing that are cohesive. Now before you throw on a bunch of random prints there are a few rules with making this trend look fabulous.

Rule 1: Balance is important with this style. When selecting two prints make sure they vary in size to create balance in the outfit.

Rule 2: Color similarity i.e. the patterns you choose should have the same or familiar colors to tie in both pieces of clothing.

Rule 3: Adding a solid colored item such as a belt or shirt creates balance and gives the outfit a sleeker look.

Rule 4: Don’t overload on the matching, wearing the same print from top to bottom may be overkill for your outfit.

#BrownBeauties I hope you add this trend to your wardrobe and love it just as much as I do.
