actually, do you know how exciting fb’s new gender options are???? like, soooo many people use facebook. i know more people who have fb accounts than people who don’t. this is actually HUGE, wow. and then there’ll be statistics about percentages of people who use they pronouns and like cis will become a more “real” word (“cis isn’t a real thing??? it’s on facebook motherfucker”) and my old relatives will check this out and so many more people will learn about this stuff!!!!! and like, people in charge of things will see this and maybe make changes that have an actual effect bc of their power!! like fb is a huge social network, every social network pretty much aspires to be like it. i’m so excited to see what this will do!

The Mx Saga Episode 1

I recently changed my name and my title to Mx, well aware that this could cause some issues.
Here’s what’s happened so far:

Co-op: Mx is on an extensive drop down list of titles when you sign up. Mx printed on the card. Zero hassle, fabulous.

Boots: They can print Mx on their cards but you can’t register with Mx. You also can’t omit a title. So I emailed them and they got me a new card with new name and title on my behalf. Feedback has apparently gone to the relevant team.

Santander: Mx does not yet appear to be on their system and I’m having to settle with Ms in order to get the name changed. Not entirely sure how to follow that up to make sure it gets done.

Student finance: Rang them to check if Mx would be a problem, they said they’d sort it at their end … will have to wait and see. Waiting on Santander and my University’s registry before I sort that out.

University registry: So far absolutely useless. I went to them a month ago with my deed poll. They said it would likely take about a week and that there were “legal issues” with Mx. After badgering them 2 weeks ago they said “someone’s looking into it” with no explanation of why it hasn’t been done or any indication of when it would be done. 0/10 will have to badger again.

In the next episode of the Mx saga we will be trying HMRC and the UK Passport Office.

Hey guys, so look what was waiting for me when I got back!

*does the dance of joy*

Getting this done was pretty easy, and the person I talked to was very welcoming. He said Mx wasn’t an option on their server, but that he could circumvent that and do it manually to make sure it appears on as much as possible, and if nothing else, at least the card. He was really friendly about it too and interested in the pronoun and asked what it meant, so I told him and it was an all-round nice conversation.

If anyone wants to use this image for records or upload it to a website or something then do feel free :)

My MP replied RE: EDM 47

Legal Recognition for those who do not associate with a particular gender.

I did not expect a reply at all, but here it is!

EDM 47 makes some excellent points regarding the struggles faced by those people who do not associate with a particular gender. Gender identity is an incredibly personal thing, and I do believe that the Government should certainly be looking at recognising this fact in official documentation.

Moreover, as the EDM notes, the choice to not specify gender in an identity document already exists in a number of Commonwealth countries, and there is also precedent in the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s Document 9303. It is therefore unlikely that this change is something which would be unrealistic in the UK.

You may be aware that I currently serve as an Opposition Whip on the Labour Frontbench. Unfortunately, strict Parliamentary protocol lays down that frontbenchers are not allowed to sign Early Day Motions, and therefore I will be unable to sign EDM 47. However, I will raise this matter with the Government directly on your behalf, and I will write to you once again when I receive a response from the Minister for Equalities.

Thank you once again for writing to me on this important matter.

Best wishes

So although he won’t be able to sign it personally, I should expect another reply at some point soon with further details, and hopefully a positive response!

If you want to help, please mail your MP and ask them to sign.
