If I had to choose just one Nintendo character to impersonate in a drag performance, it would definitely be Pauline. She’s the damsel in distress that everyone forgot about when Super Mario Bros. jumped on the scene (and introduced Princess Peach), but on most counts I like Pauline better than Peach. She’s something of a businesswoman (see the Mario Vs. DK entries on Super Mario Wiki) which means she’s more than just a womyn with a problem. She has purple eyes and wears a tattered red dress with RED PUMPS. Hello! The drag costume practically sews itself. Donkey Kong ‘94 was also the precursor to the first Mario Vs. DK game, and both of these games took the conventions of the original NES Donkey Kong title and turned it into one big platforming-puzzle game. This track here is my favorite; I played it incessantly when writing my Nintendo homage screenplay, The Hero In Red, last spring, especially when I was plotting out the second action sequence, which was inspired by NES Donkey Kong’s gameplay.
