mv: god bless america

I’m not entirely sure how to feel about the transgender ban on the military thing.

On one hand, ofc the entire concept of the US military is corrupt (not to insinuate that all military personnel themselves are evil. I understand the lure of the benefits and that many people enter the military with a candy coated idea of their service being a wholly noble cause; veterans aren’t always given what they’re promised in return even if battle disables them and puts them on the street or they have a family to feed, etc etc).
So it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that this is a black and white issue: less people in the military – how is this a bad thing?

On the other hand, there are trans people serving RIGHT NOW who could be sent home, and considering it’s Trump making this call, it could possibly be without their promised benefits. AND it’s excluding people from entering the forces and receiving those benefits to begin with.

Even if you’re anti military and pro lgbt, and think that less people in the military is a positive… this seems like just another exclusion piled on top of an entire subset of people that could lead to a snowball effect of denial. First it’s the military, but maybe it’s something else next.

Although I think the armed forces are a vile institution I don’t think that placing a ban on trans people in any context is positive, no matter what they’re being barred from. I’m opposed to the police state, but if trans people were banned from becoming police, it wouldn’t be a good thing. I’m not a right-winger NRA fucker but if trans people were banned from open carry would it be positive? No. I don’t think it matters what the moral implications are of the right that is being excluded if it contributes to othering a marginalized group

I wrote God Bless America [a track on the album] before the Women’s Marches, but I could tell they were going to happen… I realised a lot of women were nervous about some of the bills that might get passed that would directly affect them. So yes, it’s a direct response in anticipation of what I thought would happen, and what did happen
