The mourners of Imam Al-Hussayn and his brother Aba Al-Fadl Al-Abbas (peace be upon both of them) revive the martyrdom of their cousin Muslim Ibn ‘Aqeel (peace be upon him)

Sallam, please could you explain muharram for me and especially the 10th day. I really crave for an answer sister and would really much like it if you would help me. Thanks

Wa Salam,

Muharram is the month where Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain, got martyred for the sake of Islam 1,436 years ago. Hussain had received numerous letters of complaints from the Muslims of Kufa, Iraq, that were suffering under the tyrannical ruler yazid and the Umayyads, who were ruling under the name of Islam but in a corrupted, unjust way. The Imam had sent a messanger, his own cousin Muslim ibn Aqeel, to Kufa and later received a letter from Muslim that indicating support and pledges from the Kufans, who needed a savior from their evil caliph.

Only after Imam Hussain left Madina (his holy grandfather’s city) with his family did the news of betrayal reach him. Promises and pledges were broken out of pure cowardliness. Muslim (as) was left to be taken by yazid’s soldiers and later killed the most horrific death. The holy caravan stopped at Karbala, a city 84 km away from Kufa, and was met by thousands of yazid’s soldiers. There stood the imam, with 72 of his own family and supporters, against the most ruthless, wicked ruler that has no fear of God. And there, on the plains of Karbala, on the tenth of Muharram, played the most enduring selfless sacrifice for the sake of Islam in history.

I’ll end this with a quote from Imam Hussain (as) “…I did not revolt for the cause of evil tyranny or corruption, but to reform the nation of my grandfather. I want to enjoin the good and denounce the evil, and take the course of my father and grandfather”.
