“This Woman’s Work” - Maxwell

Maxwell’s This Woman’s Work is one of the greatest songs of the late 90s, early 2000s. It was actually written and performed by a British singer named Kate Bush in the late 80s. Needless to say, the song has been a hit in both the UK and the US.

With over 10 million views, the music video can give you a better description of the song than I could ever describe. WATCH THE OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO HERE!

“Efflictim” - Kid Cudi

I’m still not 100% sure why I haven’t heard many people raving about this album. One thing is for sure; Kid Cudi has some hidden gems.

“Efflictim” is a gloomy, mind altering song with a foggy tune that can almost make you feel uncomfortable. But what’s so crazy about it is that with the balance of the lyrics and the sound together, it becomes something that you don’t want to turn off. Once you catch on you will see that the lyrics and melody don’t mesh at all. That’s why the song is so unique.

“How would you feel if you heard the news that I was dead?

What would you do if you found out from your friends that I was dead?

Would you cycle through your mind, think of all the things you should of

said, or could of did differently? If I was dead.”

What you need to get out of this song is simple:

Take your life as it is, be thankful for ALL you have, and never take the things, like love, for granted. You never know where you could be.

“Super Powers” - SLik d

SLik d is now my new source for new vibe music. I hope he becomes yours too. It just makes me want to lay back in a hammock and bob my head while sipping on a cold juice box.

This kid really has some potential to go far. His style attracts a largely young audience that will be looking for new music in the coming up months. The emergence of independent artists is on the up-and-up.

This song raises a question we all should think about: If you could have super powers what would they be?  *Answer Below*

“Guns for Hands” - Twenty One Pilots

Okay.

Now, just for a minute, let’s all put away our differences on gun control. We have people that want guns and we have people that despise guns. That fact is it’s never going to be one-sided. Period. We should respect peoples’ opinions.

Saying that, Twenty One pilots released a music video about 2 weeks ago and the song is titled, “Guns For Hands”. This song right here…..this song right here, is the TRUTH. It is an opinion, so respect it. And it’s through music, which makes it 100x better wouldn’t you agree?

I’m sold on these guys. And I hope people don’t come negatively to this song because that’s not the point. Music is emotions and this song is a perfect example of that.

“Wrecking Ball” - Cover by Lily Elise & Julia Harriman

This is bone-chilling good. After listening to this cover for the 3rd time I still had goosebumps. So it’s real people!

I heard these two were on season one of NBC’s The Voice. I am hoping they won 1st place because I can’t imagine someone being better than this. The harmonization is flawless!

Be sure to follow Lily Elise and Julia Harriman and their journey to stardom!

“I’ll Be The Light” - Colton Dixon

Man does this guy have some vocals. This feels like the male version of what Kelly Clarkson’s music would be like. Just to be clear, that was a major compliment!

This is an awesome song. It’s crazy to think he didn’t make the top 24 on American Idol his first time auditioning in season 10. Just goes to show you that dedication can surpass any obstacles if you really put your mind to it.

Born in Tennessee, Colton Dixon is an Alternative and Christian rock artist that surprisingly just placed 7th in the 11th season of American Idol. Regardless of what place Dixon received, it’s obvious he is going to have an amazing career.

I respect that he has good intentions with his music. “I’ll be the light” is just a sample of what’s on his album Colton Dixon: The Messenger, which was just recently released January 29th.

“Castles” - Joe Budden

On February 5th, Joe Budden released his new album No Love Lost. To any true rap fans, this is an album that deserves to be supported. CHECK OUT THE FULL TRACKLIST HERE.

Joe Budden has been put behind the scenes for a while now. And that’s a surprise knowing he is a part of the rap group Slaughterhouse. To anyone who is curious about the lives of musicians on the inside, “Castles” is a great song to describe it.

In his track “Castles”, Budden speaks about the issues he has experienced in pursing his rap career. Sad to see that people who are talented and passionate about what they do end up just being seen as a tool to drive dollar signs by the media and the ones closest to them.

Budden speaks about trouble with personal relationships:

“A pretty good judge of character, maybe I mistaked a few.

Cut some people off but had no choice it’s what they made me do.

Why would you take advantage when it’s something I'da gave to you?

And in the long run, it doesn’t take from me, it takes from you.”

He also speaks about the media’s affect on him personally:

“What’s supposed to happen when I’m not hot anymore?

Your job rely on me being crazy, but what if I’m not anymore?”

Most fans don’t take the time to realize that famous musicians aren’t always what they portray in music videos or VH1. But the beauty of this song is the fact that Budden doesn’t leave on a bad note. His love for music and his fans allows him to stay true to himself regardless of what the industry throws at him.

“Going Through Changes” - Eminem

Let’s backtrack to Em’s Recovery album for a few minutes.

Eminem’s emotions display 100% in his track “Going Through Changes”. But then again, when doesn’t Em hit a sore spot in his rapping.

The fact that Eminem doesn’t hold back any of his life experiences for his fans really makes a fat statement. His ability to fully reconstruct a verse and then twist it towards a style of its own truly made him into the legend he is today. He is authentic and blunt in his feelings, but the emotions behind his lyrics can last for lifetimes.

“Broken Glass” - The Veragroove

Now this is great, vibrant music; Veragroove must be trying to make it out of that hot Arizona desert with this one! Songs like this just can’t escape my head. This is when my index finger become really aggravated with me because I can’t stop hitting the replay button!

If you have been keeping up with MusicByLife, you may have noticed that I already blogged about one single from Veragroove titled “Yah Lives!.” But shame on me for not giving you more! That was just a MINOR introduction for a MAJOR group of musicians.

Arising from Tempe, Arizona, The Veragroove is a “high energy, eclectic group of individuals with music in their veins.” It’s not often that you hear of a mixture between genres like rock, reggae, funk (soul), and even the blues. Many bands wouldn’t dare to imagine the possibility! That’s why The Veragroove is so special in this sense. They experimented with a rare sound and came out with a great tune to SHARE with the music world.

“Broken Glass” is a song full of melody and swing. It’s like walking into a candy shop; your “taste buds” will thank you when listening to a song that has a great assortment of musical flavors you can try. Every band should want their music sound so good you can taste it!

Veragroove not only has a great sound, but the lyrics are rooted to a cause:

“Why do we live in denial?

Run through our days as we sleep through the fire.

I feel rain when the sun is shining down on me.

You got me barefoot and walking on broken glass.”

We live in a time where major records labels are no longer required for success. Bands like The Veragroove achieve levels of greatness BECAUSE OF YOU AND ME! THE FANS! Nothing more, nothing less.

We choose what music we listen to, whether it’s on the radio, TV, or any other external media source. It’s been awhile since I’ve heard music like this on the radio; that would be a breath of fresh air.

“Working All Day” - Kidd Seven ft. Katori Walker

People can easily overlook the effort put into music like this; these guys work all day and all night. It’s not because the beat or the image that you see in the picture above. You can honestly feel what is being said.

Word of advice: Always feel for the music; it is not something that is physical or visible.

This song is a real mirror image of what hip-hop should be. We need to support more artists like this and as fans hold them accountable for staying authentic. Authenticity is what makes great music. It is NEVER the money.

“Save Tonight” - Eagle Eye Cherry

This song is just full of energy!

Save tonight is a song all about living it up while we still have time. There’s no reason to not grab life by the horns and ‘delay our misery’. He looks as if tomorrow only comes to take us away. Now that’s a way to put it.

Eagle Eye Cherry carried on the legacy of music in his family. His father, Don Cherry, was a jazz artist and his sister, Neneh Cherry, is a singer/hip-hop artist. All those months on the road with his father helped mold himself into a well rounded musician that eventually came out with very successful hits like “Save Tonight” in the late 90s.

“Save Tonight” is still considered the signature song of Eagle Eye Cherry.
