muscle car pin up

I don’t trust nostalgia. I question the motives of people who long for the return of the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. I can’t help but wonder about the motives of those who glorify these times, putting them on a pedestal.

I mean, if you’re white, these were great times to be alive. The (white) middle class was thriving and growing exponentially. (white) Americans were getting college degrees at a higher rate than any time previously in our history. (white) Americans were buying their first home by the millions, many of them the first in their families to ever own a home. (white) Americans were enjoying a huge surge in upward mobility.

Minorities were, for the most part, left out of the greatest surge of wealth and prosperity this country had ever experienced. It was only a great time to be alive, if you were white. So, I distrust nostalgia about these times. Knowing what we know today, why would anyone want to go back to where this the norm? Why would anyone want to go back to be around and benefit from Jim Crow? Why would anyone want a return of these times? of those conditions?

This is why the whole “Make America Great Again” was so insidious. So many people see America at its greatest, at its zenith, in the years following WWII. And it was an amazing time to be alive if you were white and straight. “Affirmative action” for white people (GI college loans, VA home loans, a boom in union and manufacturing jobs that went mostly to the growing white middle class) was in full swing. But the already huge disparity and inequity between white people and every else in the country grew at an even greater rate.

Fuck the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. You can keep the 70’s and 80’s too. I just want to look forward, especially now when our country seems to be moving backwards. Keep your pin-up girls, muscle cars and all that other shit away from me, thankyouverymuch.
