Trans woman JoJo Striker shot and killed in Toledo, initially misgendered in media reports

  • Police found the body of JoJo Striker, 23, in an empty garage in Toledo, Ohio, on Feb. 8, WTOL reported.  Striker died of a single gunshot to her torso. Police do not currently have a suspect or motive for her death.
  • WTOL reported that Striker’s mother, Shanda Striker, believes the killing was a hate crime. “The police told us to leave it alone but that will never happen because I will always search for my son’s killer,” Striker told WTOL misgendering JoJo. “This is a hate crime and it needs to stop.”
  • Initial media reports misgendered Striker. On its Facebook page, Equality Toledo invited media to training workshops to educate them on better reporting practices. “We are saddened to hear of the murder of JoJo Striker,” Toledo wrote.
  • “As a way to honor her life, this is a direct invitation to all media sources in the Toledo area to a workshop on how to appropriately report on the lives of the LGBT community, particularly our transgender siblings.”
  • Phaylen Fairchild, a Toledo-area transgender woman and advocate for the community, said in a phone interview that Striker’s death has shaken many of the community’s young transgender women, who already feel Toledo’s environment is extremely oppressive to trans women, especially trans women of color.  Read more (2/14/17 5:00 PM)

schniggles  asked:

I would be so very, very interested in your take on a Stardew Valley fic

Elliot opened the door to his cabin, and nearly fell backwards, swallowing an unbecoming shriek of surprise.

The woman who’d claimed the old farm west of Pelican Town was standing right outside his door. Her dark eyes were wide and wild, blue hair frayed and flying in every direction, green slime and rust smudged over her cheeks. The hem of her white dress was tattered, touched with the mud that soaked her heavy boots.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hello?” he said. “Are you hurt?” He thought that some of the mud might have been bruises, but it was hard to tell.

She laughed like a jug full of rocks. “Yeah,” she said. She hadn’t taken her eyes off of him. “You weren’t here this morning so I went to the mine.” She had a pickaxe and a sword strapped to her back, both looking worn and battered.

“Would you like me to call Harvey?” he asked, because the longer he looked at her the more she looked as if she was about to collapse.

“No, I’ll probably just go to bed,” she said, pulling her backpack in front of her so that she could dig through it.

“It really seems like you should go to the hosp–”

He was interrupted when she shoved something towards him.

“I got you this lobster,” she said.

It was in poor shape, having apparently been kept at the bottom of her bag, beneath raw ore and berries and sharp hunks of crystal. He took it very gingerly from her with the tips of well-manicured fingers. Hers were chewed ragged and covered in dirt.

“This is a beautiful gift,” he assured her. “Thank you.”

She beamed. Her teeth were stained red.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to–”

“Okay, bye,” she said, turning to run back toward the bridge into town. Elliot was left standing in the doorway to his cabin, spotless from his boots to his cravat, holding a disfigured lobster covered in gold dust and crushed salmonberries.

He looked at the lobster.

“… I wonder if she likes poetry.”

I was feeling terrible because I forgot to commemorate my cat’s eighth adoption anniversary, but I just learned that tumblr will make gifs from videos! So here are some pics of my imperious kitty while he’s trying to go to sleep despite my interferences.

anyway i am still not over how lattimore translated οὐλομένη as “sluttish” when it refers to clytemnestra.

it means “accursed” or “destructive” and it’s the same word that famously describes the wrath of achilles in the second line of the iliad

but no, he didn’t think “oh cool, the ghost of agamemnon in the odyssey describes his murder at clytemnestra’s hands as if she were as destructive as achilles’ wrath! let’s make that clear to the reader by using the same word!”– on the contrary, he apparently thought “the murderer is a woman, so there’s only one option here, she’s a slut.”

shame him.

there’s a dead girl inside me.

i can feel her rattling around,
her lungs choked with loss,
heart pounding like wardrums.

she had a laugh like summer rain
until the world tore it away.

(little girls who wish on stars
don’t last long on the ground.)

there’s a dead girl inside me
and i’m the one who killed her.
