Oh, did you hear? Apparently Game of Thrones has officially supplanted the books. They no longer matter. And since the show is the real canon now, GRRM shouldn't even bother finishing Winds of Winter. (Source: wired. com/ 2017/05/ george-r-r-martin-game-of-thrones-books/)

This is probably the single worst thing I’ve ever read.

“The Song of Ice and Fire is not the Westerosi enchiridion any more. Martin’s story, the world he built, lives on TV. And now that HBO is cooking up spinoff showsbased on the original, it’s official: The TV universe has eclipsed the books and become the Game of Thrones canon.“

The canon of the TV show is NOT the canon of the books. Just…what? It can’t be! Shit that happens in the show is like, the direct opposite of the books in most cases, and the themes/takeaways could not be further apart.

Just…wow, what a hot take, dude. Reads like someone who feels pretty smart for having read the books, yet apparently missed everything about what makes a narrative a narrative. The Checklist Effect permeates fandom?

“And for those worried Martin won’t have control of his creation at all, fret not. He’s reportedly involved in not one, but two of the proposed writing teams for the spinoff shows HBO is considering. There’s no telling which programs will ever make it to the small screen, but it’s practically a given that he’ll be on board. That means it’s also almost certain the completion of the Song of Ice and Fire series will be delayed even further. But if Martin never finishes the last book, and instead the story of the winter in Westeros is wrapped up in a series of multi-million-dollar, special-effects-laden episodes of TV? Well, there are worse fates.”

This is just. It’s impossible. GoT cannot write an ending to ASOIAF because it is not the same story. At all. It’s profiting off of Martin’s creative work, and sure maybe there can be series set in Weisseroff where ~~anything can happen~~, but the conflation is just sheer idiocy or willful ignorance at this point.

This is a BIG Deal

Okay so Pentatonix covered Bohemian Rhapsody. They just did that. And WOW! I first heard it yesterday and honestly I still can’t process that insanity. I know that for the longest time, everyone has wanted them to do the song since they did bits of the song in Evolution of Music back in 2013.

Now to be clear, Bohemian Rhapsody is a LONG as hell song. Where most songs are from 2 and half minutes to four minutes…..this is about SIX. That is a lot of music and lyrics in two extra minutes than the norm. So it is HARD to do all the way through. Besides that it is basically three different songs in one. So that is three different kinds of music styles that have to flow seamlessly together. Yeah it is complicated and technical as HELL.

In fact it is SO technical that Queen themselves, the creators of this classic song, could not do it live. Not completely anyway. The way in which Freddie had composed it, there was NO way for them to do all the parts live. They had to have certain parts played out through a recording and other parts were able to be done live. Like the intro was impossible to achieve live and so they had a recording. Another part was the opera I believe that was layered in such a way there was no way to reproduce the sound. The band in fact had to separate the song because of all the difficulty that went into performing it.

Due to its length and technical difficulty NO artist has really done a TRUE cover of it. Not the way it should be. There have been many that have tried to emulate the original work, but here’s the kicker. It’s impossible to do without some editing or machine. And that’s due to how Freddie created the piece. So where does Pentatonix fit into this?

Well they made Bohemian Rhapsody, a song which relies heavily on multi layering and effects, into a near perfect acapella version. It is safe to say that PTX, like all the singers/bands before them, had to do SOMETHING to achieve the iconic parts of the song. Be it light layering or a choir, there’s almost NO way they could achieve it with their voices alone. They aren’t super human (well scratch that, they ARE but they don’t want us mere mortals to know that). Remember when I said that Queen couldn’t even perform Bohemian Rhapsody live? Yeah, if this song is a part of the 2017 tour set list…..and they can pull it off….then Pentatonix are truly geniuses, no lie. And they made Gold, a song all about auto tune and effects possible…..Cause Mitchy is out of this world.

Anyway, I know that Pentatonix will have no problem with the length and the transitions in the song. Their Evolution of….songs have trained them for something like this. Each of the three Evolution of…. songs has taught them how to quickly move from one song, style, and tempo to the next. Each one is also long and very complex. They’ve also mentioned it took months to put together EofM. Scott and Mitch revealed EofB was put together in one night (cause they are just stans like that, I’m looking at you Scotty Boy). I’m not sure about how long it took to put together EofMJ. Regardless they were able to handle it all.

One last thing to bring up is that Pentatonix said years ago (on The Sing Off in fact) that they were not meant to do rock music. There was just too much involved for them to pull off a rock song convincingly. Even so they were able to make it through Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf without tripping up live. This will their return to trying to pull off the genre. Being one of the most famous songs in the classic rock genre….yeah they definitely went for it. This has been requested by fans for years. So be proud and grateful of what they’ve done to sing this song.

This will be their greatest challenge to perform yet. Forget the digital sounds of Daft Punk or the emotional intensity of Hallelujah. THIS, Bohemian Rhapsody, is forever immortalized in the minds of music lovers worldwide. Pulling it off on stage in front of thousands of people…..there is no way that it won’t catch the attention of the media and people at large. Here’s to those crazy choir nerds who started off with a dream.

#sexlaughterhonesty masterlist

#sexlaughterhonesty week was a great success this year! As of this morning, submissions are closed, but if you tagged me (or your work) earlier in the week and your piece is not included below, please get in touch with me. Tumblr was not cooperative with tags last week.

If you think about it, sex can be pretty silly. Pretty silly looking, awkward to engage in, ridiculous to coordinate. If you don’t believe me, randomly pause a porn gif/clip (this is tumblr, I trust your ability to find one. ;) ). 90% of the time you’re going to get some goofy facial expression (if there are faces on screen, lol). Even when scripted, sex is…well, it’s kinda funny.

Still, it can also be wickedly intimate. Two (or more) bodies sharing moments of connection that can mean little or much and not the same thing to every participant. Sex is messy in more ways than one and I think the truth of that gets lost in how sex is portrayed in the media.

#sexlaughterhonesty was organized on the hopes of a better dialogue. To share honestly, to laugh about things, to combat unrealistic stereotypes. To talk about the average and the outliers. To help someone feel just a little less lost. Below you’ll find a variety of multi-fandom fics (and some art, as well as a comic) all focusing on the silly, honest, realistic aspects of sex and intimacy. Many based on actual experiences.

This year we had optional daily themes, and the bulk of the contributions below are organized around them. “Let’s Talk About Sex” which focuses on honest, open communication, fictionalized personal anecdotesCoituis interruptus (hilarius moments of interruption), and Coitus ridiculous (encounters of absolute ridiculousness).

Below a cut for length, because WOW, we had a ton of contributions this year. You want smut? We’ve got your smut.

I play the PS4 and this is why I honestly rarely do the “most difficult” difficulty in the multiplayers I do, do. For example, in ME: A Multiplayer (andromeda), there’s some nasty elitist on Platinum and people who will scream all obscenities at you just because you were tying to get away from a problematic area (or Hell, staying in one spot because you were trying to get the mission done).

From one gamer to another, don’t be “that” asshole. I just had to block like 3-4 people because of some bullshit behavior on ME: A multiplayer on platnium.

The old stories say the manor was built on the meeting of three ley lines, making it a home for people from many places across the ages. Today, its residents consider this vast place their home away from home, until the apparent mysticism of the place allows them to leave.” – Excerpt from The History of Fortuitus Manor by J.T. Bolton

Simplicité - Chapter 1 {Biadore}

Hi everyone! I’ve had this idea in my head for awhile, and I’ve decided that this is going to be my main focus for the time being. I’m going to try my best to update this every Wednesday night/Early Thursday morning.

This is a lesbian AU, set in Chicago during present day. Bianca, 26, is a successful business owner of the fabulous Simplicité Salon & Spa. Adore, 21, is her new personal assistant/makeup apprentice from Southern California. The two are close in age but couldn’t be more different, but they might end up surprising one another as they get to know each other, as well as themselves. Adore and Bianca are both on their own paths to acheiving personal growth, and have the help of Courtney, Bob, Farrah, and more. 😽 This will have a few side ships, and I already have it partially outlined because well, some of these experiences actually happened to me personally.

This is mainly a teaser chapter, its 3.9k so somewhat lengthy so I really hope you enjoy!!

Can you believe I listen to Young Forever everyday and cry buckets of tears? Lay the song dissection on me ~F

oh my god fhasdlgadg there is s omuch happening in this song, i’ll try my best to address them best i can. you could spend three days listening to it on repeat and still find hidden parts in the instrumentation or the vocals or the soundbites i just ugh. while reading this, please keep in mind that i’m not a professional musician nor am i an intense music student nor am i even particularly good at playing my any instrument(s), so if you belong to one of the categories above: please don’t hate me lmao

1. electronic vocals (?)

in the original ver of young forever, the addition of electronic sounds manages to enhance the piece w/o overloading the listener. a lot of top 40′s lay on too much of these toggling effects after recording & i get bored of it real fast; it’s banal af and most songs ends up sounding the same. however, whoever produced this / was in charge of sound editing did a great job avoiding a lot of overdone trends !

the song opens with a really quiet, rather high vocal scat (for lack of better words) that is repeated throughout the rest of the piece w/o trying to catch attention. the whole point of this motif is to bring variety to the basic synth piano that starts off namjoon’s verse, but it keeps getting looped back over the chorus and is half-drowned out by the melody later on. it’s an interesting decision to bring it back again, esp when the casual listener won’t catch it.

when most of the instrumentation cuts out around the 2min mark with jungkook’s line, it becomes more prominent again, returning the theme of “quietude” back to the audience. the ending is pretty bare to the bones musically, but this high line is reminiscent of the beginning of the song, and brings everything back full circle. it’s drowned out most of the time, but i’m still in love with this tiny lil touch idk

2. usage of silence

right when namjoon’s voice comes in, the editor made the deliberate choice to leave in his intake of breath. this serves the purpose of making the bass line feel more impactful (aka that note drop u hear; i’m still trying to place what instrument that is) it’s the juxtaposition of the opening, the intimacy of the inhale, and how namjoon gets past the first couple words w only synth support all serve to intensify that first real heavy note

not to forget, hoseok’s verse builds up the tension so high before wiping out completely. it’s the two (? maybe three) lines of percussion and the synth (sounds like unwinding VCR tape) that crescendo with his voice. the whole thing seems to “break” as it reaches the climax, serving to make his scream at the end even more intense. the whole rap part has been leading up to it, and i get chills every goddamn time mmfalsdkhg

this is the same with jungkook’s part. the vocals have a more noticeable percussion line, and the snare (?) drum speeds up + crescendos into the silence. only when EVERYTHING drops out with him, do the busywork of all these melodies and countermelodies smooth out into clapping, the high opening line, and very obvious piano. there are also tons of layered vocals weaving in and out.

there is so much power in the silence as well. the silence right after hoseok’s verse where he yells into the deep, his lines climbing higher n higher every time, silence at 2:03 when jungkook sings, and silence at the beginning of the song. all of it is important to bring about a suspended, anticipated feeling to the listener ?????????and it makes things the song less cookie-cutter + more interesting

3. that One Bass Note

when counting in 4/4 (idk if it’s cut time or not lmao; both seem to work fine w the rhythm), that low bass comes in on the down beat of every two measures, so the suspension is more engaging than to have one every bar. it’s a really small thing, but it helps with the languid, drawled-out sorta feel that this song aims for.

both yoongi AND namjoon have very minimalistic starts to their lines. their rap begins on the pickup and the third word or so is really emphasized bc of the drop (idk what’s producing the noise tho / what exactly to call it). hoseok still gets that bass note, but he starts right on the down beat, which immediately changes the mood of the piece, but draws relatively little attention to it ????

4. musical buildup

the song gets built up verse by verse. namjoon starts with that high line, sparse piano chords, a sort of high-beeping noise that sounds like synth woodblock or something lmao. that sound goes off on the 3rd beat of every measure, while that bass note is the down beat of every second bar.

yoongi gets a fuller sound with low vocals, synth piano in a high ass tessitura (likely to compliment the opening motif), a really nice percussion line, and some nice low bass-y chords to bring in more depth. this is when the song starts sounding healthier, heartier, more gut-wrenching.

hoseok gets double percussion with the start of his lines. there’s a brassy, brush-like sound going on every beat, and a rat-a-tat-tat sorta thing that starts outta it at 1:06, and then takes up a life of it’s own. it has nice syncopation & it gets held off to every 3rd beat, right until taehyung starts singing. then it becomes a consistent line in the background of the song and it makes me nut so hard every time

this signifies a change in the overall dynamics and sound (???i guess) bc it calls in a more harried tone when vocal line goes In For The Kill. from then on, things stay pretty consistent (the electronic woodblock and that one bass note too!), except there are a bunch of easier heard percussion weaving in and out which is expected

5. layered vocals

throughout the song, there are tons of echoey lines, the ones that branch off from the main lyrics right away, others that circle back and show up while hidden way in the background. all it of constitutes to a hallowed sort of feel, like you’re standing on the beach or off a cliff or in a canyon with nothing around you for miles and miles and miles and it just???it takes that feeling of being Alone / at the end of ur time and really drives it home. this effect really goes with the theme of the song, especially when the lyrics turn out to be a death knell of sorts ;((

ex: there’s one really muffled, hidden line mirroring the melody at 2:21, and the first time i tapped into it i Freaked??? who tf is singing????? why is this so genius??? it grounds the half-belting real nice-like. not to forget the way bts harmonizes with themselves but also leave spaces for single words to shine thru (until filling out all the gaps by the end) goes so well with the theme of playing with silence in this song. it’s Genius, i’m telling you. Genius.

6. the singing itself

the vocal line has a natural progression from the lower melody to higher notes. jimin and jungkook both have high ass riffs in falsetto, but every one drops a third, i think. i don’t have enough theory under my belt to break the melody down further (like why the notes sound good or the sound is very unique etc), but the choral parts are my fave bit. i love the minimalistic instrumentals (clapping on the off beats god ,,, always gets to me) while vocal line sings their hearts out on top of it (ಥ﹏ಥ) and then all of bts joins in. the full multi-layered voice effect is so nostalgic n sentimental and that’s exactly what they were going for with this???

wow truly incredible i love bts

in conclusion:

this song utilizes typical effects often heard in pop music, but they’re used in very unique ways that help the listener stay engaged. the sound mixing is impeccable, the melody is neither repetitive nor boring, and hidden instruments as the moving line are done tastefully.

also: silence? yes. silence.

never have I ever: punk space fairy who's just dyed their hair au, toy story au, in the same existential philosophy class au, the rogues crocheting tiny cupcakes with faces on them as gifts for someone?

Okay, by being so specific, I almost want to write how I’d subvert each one of these. Going to go with Coldwave unless otherwise specified or something else screams out at me.

punk space fairy who’s just dyed their hair au

This is oddly specific. I think in this case, Barry is the punk space fairy. He’s moved into Len and Mick’s apartment, he appears to have unlimited magical powers, and he WON’T GO AWAY. He insists that he’s someone’s fairy godfather, but he can’t quite remember whether it’s Len or Mick’s (he was in a mosh pit up by Haedus II in the year 2735 when he got the call, okay? he was distracted!) and he’s just going to ignore them when they say they don’t have any specific wishes, and all of the wishes about murdering people apparently are a no-go for some reason. Also, he just dyed his hair and ruined like three different towels in the process. Len is considering strangling him. Mick keeps reminding him that they weren’t even their towels. They stole those towels from a hotel. Len says that’s not the point. Barry wonders aloud if he should dye it again tomorrow to really get that multi-colored effect he was going for. Mick tackles Len to keep him from going for his gun.

toy story au

Mick is ninja action figure who’s still quietly mourning being tossed out to be burned as garbage by his previous family, even though he got rescued and given to this family in the process. Len is the brand new cool-as-ice spaceman, very popular, that Mick is worried will lead to him being thrown away again. They conflict at first, but when Len wanders too far outside and get set upon by the neighbor’s evil toys, Mick jumps in to save his life. They become friends and the children in the family happily play space pirates vs. ninjas (or their new favorite game, space pirates AND ninjas vs. the world) going forward. No one is thrown away.

in the same existential philosophy class au

Barry is signed up to it because he was late to selection (he’s always late) and he doesn’t understand anything except maybe the fact that there are two incredibly attractive upperclassmen sitting in the front row.

oh wait, what do you mean they’re the teachers?!

the rogues crocheting tiny cupcakes with faces on them as gifts for someone [ETA: I read this as ‘decorating’ instead of ‘crocheting’, oops!]

Barry keeps finding them everywhere.

He’s pretty sure they’re a threat. A coded threat. A veiled threat.

The rest of the Justice League can stop laughing at him any time now.

(Kara has just taken to following him around and eating the ones he doesn’t want. She claims it’s not her fault they’re delicious.)

“Oh, so you liked it?”
“YES IT WAS AMAZING I WAS NOT READY”
