When having a consultation with a MUA for the first time (for wedding makeup), what are some things that the artist should discuss with you? And should a MUA know what type of makeup would work best just by looking at their client (airbrush vs. foundation, color tones that will accentuate or enhance)?

In order to be an excellent consultant, first, you must ask the client what it is they want or at least think they want.  This way you can access their needs. Questions like: do you have any allergies to certain products, what’s your skin-type, etc., should be at the top of the list.  Before meeting with the client also ask them to bring in a couple of tear sheets of what type of makeup they’d like.  The makeup artist should also bring a couple of tear sheets to show them what they have in mind too.  Sometimes clients know exactly what they want and others don’t.  Each consultation is different and depends on the individual. During the consultation the makeup artist should also perform a test and/or make suggestions about makeup recommendations.

Tip:  Always, consider suggesting makeup that is long-wearing as wedding makeup should last for a considerable amount of time.
