This is easily the darkest musical on the list, and one of Tim Burton’s darkest movies. Who would have thought that a musical about a serial killer who with the help of his neighbor makes his victims into pies could be so successful? Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter deliver, once again superb performances as Benjamin Barker/Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett respectively. Alan Rickman (R.I.P) conjures a perfectly sadistic and slithery Judge Turpin. It’s a twisted, dark, vision of everything I’ve come to expect of Tim Burton musicals. A bit scary, great acting, good vocals, and gloomy. The setting is a great caricature of Industrial London, gray skies, brick wall to wall buildings, everyone dressed in sad grays. Sasha Baron Cohen pleasantly surprises in his most serious role yet. It’s a bloody good watch for fans of the musical and Burton alike.
