Summary- Just when Y/N thinks her dreams have come true after landing a dream job at the Avengers tower with Mr Stark she soon learns things wont be as easy as she’d first hoped. Not only is the jobs pressure more than she anticipated, but a certain metal armed man is also determined to make her life a hole lot harder at every turn. Bucky Barnes X reader
For as long as you could remember you had been fascinated by
the Avengers, by superheroes as a hole really. Not because of the whole having
abilities malarkey, although then again turning into a big green monster or
being induced with super soldier serum is still a pretty interesting topic. No, it
was because of what they did for you, for everyone. Saving the world, time
after time and asking for nothing in return. They were heroes. So of course,
when Tony Stark’s assistant called you back earlier today offering you the job
of secretary and file manager based on the same floor as the Avengers, you couldn’t
help but feel as though you’d peeked. Yeah, sure you weren’t exactly saving the
world but you where saving Tony Stark’s sanity, one disorganised file at a time.
Anyhow, the assistant told you to start first thing
tomorrow, 9am sharp, apparently, Mr Stark hated late employers which you
supposed was understandable and you anyway certainly weren’t going to be late
on your first day, especially for your dream job. So, you agreed, thanked her
and then put down the phone, grinning to yourself as you fell back onto your
bed and took in the silence of your small apartment. Life was about to get a whole lot better. You
ended up sleeping pretty well that night.
You looked up at the tall building, marked with the big letters ‘Stark’
across the side, it was honestly like a dream, as cliché as that sounds you
half expected the assistant to call you up again that morning to tell you there
had been some kind of mistake, but she never did and here you are.
As you walked into the building, you were met with a giant,
spotless reception. Everything was white except for the men and women walking
by in black suits and formal attire, you looked down at yourself starting to
think that maybe your dark red blouse wasn’t the best idea. Shaking off the
thought, you marched up to the reception where a brunette stuck her finger up
to you as she picked up the white phone.
“Hello Stark Tower, how may I help?” Her voice was high
pitched like the kind of sound you’d pair with an animated cartoon animal.
“Mhmm..do you have an appointment?…I see…2:30?…Excellent…Bye,
bye now.” She hung up the phone harshly and glanced up at you with a huge
smile, too big to be genuine.
“How may I help you?”
“Ye um hi. I got a job here and I’m just wondering if I
could get directions or if I need to meet anyone to you know, show me the
ropes?” You smiled out of politeness. The brunette began to type away on her
laptop about something definitely not to do with your request.
“I see. The secretary, right? Yes Y/N is it. Mr Sta-” she
was cut off by a dark-haired man who you only recognised from the multiple
billboards across the city as Tony Stark.
“Y/N. Ah nice of you to be on time unlike some of these
other employees” The brunette blushed.
“Walk with me.” Without even looking at you he held out his
hand for you take some folders he was carrying which you obviously grabbed
without hesitation and proceeded to speed walk beside Mr Stark.
“So, to your right is the café, a favourite of mine, they do
great vanilla lattes just a heads up. To your left is, you know probably
something boring, you don’t have to worry about that. Anyway, here’s the
elevator.’ You both went inside as Mr Stark pushed a button for the 42nd
floor, you watched as the doors closed behind you.
“Y/N right?” You nodded.
“Yes Mr Stark.”
“No, please call me Tony. I hate that Mr Stark mumbo jumbo.
So, what did Pepper tell you about the job, I can’t suppose she told you much
over the phone?” You gathered that Pepper was the name of the woman you talked
to yesterday and now you thought about it no she didn’t, recalling it, you remember
the extent of her description went something like oh you know, you’ll just be handling files and maybe making the occasionally
cup of coffee.
“Oh err she just told me I’ll be looking over files and
maybe making people tea and coffee. Just stuff like that” Tony raised an
eyebrow at your answer.
“How very vague of her. I suppose that leaves me with the
fun part of telling you the specifics-” Just then the elevator door opened with
a ping to reveal an apartment like designed floor, but of course it was too huge
to be your average apartment especially when looking at your own that was probably
the size of their bathroom.
You and Tony stepped out of the elevator and onto the wooden
floor where, to the left was a small desk with three large piles of paper
placed in the middle. “So, this is where you’ll be working. Lunch is between
12:30-1:30 and your hours will be 9 till 5 but be prepared to work overtime if
it’s been a busy day. Remember, if I’m working overtime, so is my coffee habit
and that’s your responsibility.” You nodded at his every word, a part of you wanting
to take notes.
“Now ur, you can put those down,” you placed the folders you were carrying on the
desk “So, other than coffee, your job is very important. See these files here,
they’re all what the board considers mission opportunities and its up to you to
read through them and separate them into priority concern and not priority
concern. You also have to do file reports after every Avengers’ mission and make
sure that the right people are contacted if any legal law stuff is needed. Got
“Ur yeah, got it.”
“Good. So, questions?”
“Um just one. Isn’t sorting out priority mission’s kind of a
big job for a secretary?” That was a lot of pressure.
“It was the boards idea, they think it’d be refreshing to
have a civilian’s point of view and don’t worry, all your decisions will be
double checked by higher up.” He smiled and gestured for you to take a seat at
the desk so you did.
“Well if that’s all Y/N. Have fun.” And with that he exited
back into the elevator, pushed the button and he was gone. And you were alone
with a mountain of files all detailing mission prospects. Talk about
“Who are you?” A deep voice came from around the corner
causing you to jump and spill at least 30 files all over the floor. Shit. Well some first day this was. You
looked up to see where the voice came from and leaning against a wall in the
kitchen area stood a tall man with dark black hair, arms folded. Although, the
most prominent feature about him was probably the rusted silver metal arm that
was showing unapologetically in his short-sleeved shirt.
“Y/N. Um I’m the new secretary.” Just as you were speaking,
you got to your knees and started to pick up the files off the floor as the man
just watched you.
“Hmm. Didn’t realise we needed a secretary. Especially a
clumsy one.” He turned away from you and started pouring himself a glass of
water. You weren’t used to people being this rude to you, of course you could
handle the brunette downstairs but at least she tried to fake being nice
whereas this guy was just being a straight up douche. What made it even worse
was that you didn’t know how to respond so you just kept your head down, picked
up the last of the files and plopped back on your seat.
“Um your Bucky Barnes right? I read about you in a museum once.”
You said, god you sounded stupid. The guy didn’t even respond straight away, he
sipped his water in one long gulp and then placed the glass in the sink.
“Well, it’s nice to know I have fans. Clean my glass when
you’re done with those files would you doll.” Then he strode out of the kitchen
and that was it. That was your first interaction with The Winter Soldier.
