Americans Fall for the Flat Cap Gang (Wall Street Journal, June 7 2016)

“Peaky Blinders” has given its creator, Steven Knight, some unexpected street cred in the U.S. On a visit to London, the rapper Snoop Dogg asked his agent to arrange a meeting for him with Mr. Knight to express his appreciation for the series, which is set in Birmingham in the years following World War I. “We spoke for about three hours about how ‘Peaky Blinders’ reminded Snoop of his own move into a gang way of life,” says Mr. Knight. Snoop Dogg was unavailable to comment, but he has used Instagram to tout the show.

Gang cultures exist throughout the world, but for movie and TV audiences, they don’t always cross borders easily. Netflix doesn’t provide ratings, but “Peaky Blinders” is anecdotally gaining traction in America to go along with its hit status in Britain. The third season became available on the streaming service last week; U.K. audiences will tune in for the season finale on Thursday. BBC Two recently announced it had ordered two more seasons of the show, which airs in about 160 other countries.

The series comes from real-life stories that Mr. Knight’s parents told him about gangs of illegal Birmingham bookmakers who fought a fierce turf war during the 1920s and beyond. Mr. Knight’s mother was a bookies’ runner when she was 8 years old. She would walk the streets of Birmingham carrying a basket of laundry. “People would wrap a sixpence in a piece of paper with their code name and the name of the horse they were betting on and drop it into the basket as she walked by,” he says.

The May 31 start date comes just in time to qualify for 2016 Emmy nominations. The show’s producer Caryn Mandabach, a veteran of TV hits such as “The Cosby Show” and “That ’70s Show,” thinks “Peaky Blinders” deserves to be part of award consideration. The standouts include Mr. Knight, who has written 16 of the 18 episodes so far; Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who stars as Tommy Shelby, the keen-witted but tortured mastermind of the Shelbys’ gambling operations; and English actress Helen McCrory, who plays Aunt Polly, the family’s tough matriarch. In seasons 2 and 3, English actor Tom Hardy also has a recurring role as Alfie Solomons, the buffoonish rival head of a London-based Jewish criminal organization.
