“How long have you been standing there?”

Emelie’s POV:

The night was cold and bare like my feet on the coarse sands. I walked along the shoreline of the beach as the waves lightly touched my skin. The moon was full tonight. Its presence brings light onto the coal coloured sky.

  • The male benders in ATLA: Really good. They worked hard to get where they are skill wise and while it hasn't always been easy, they are capable and can hold their own in a fight. One of them was even the Avatar, which is pretty impressive since he mastered the elements at age twelve, rather than start learning at 16 like most Avatars.
  • The female benders in ATLA: Inarguably the most powerful and unmatched humans in the entire world. Prodigies, masters, and creators of subbending styles. One was compared in skill to the Fire Lord at age EIGHT and able to perform one of the rarest and most difficult forms by 14. She couldn't be defeated by another's (even the Avatar's) bending alone. Only faced defeat when fighting two other master benders while on the verge of a complete mental breakdown (officially being defeated by different female bender). Another held an entire city up by a single turret while standing on unstable ground, and then went on to invent her own bending style at the age of twelve. One mastered her element in mere WEEKS, mastered bloodbending and defeated the woman who INVENTED IT the FIRST TIME SHE EVER ATTEMPTED IT, held her own against a master waterbender without ANY TRAINING, and fully healed someone from a fatal wound, making her a master at two vastly different forms of waterbending at the age of 14. A female Avatar quite literally reshaped the planet and created her own ISLAND. AND MOVED IT ACROSS THE SEA. These women shown in the show are not only the most powerful and talented females in their universe, but also in almost any known piece of television or fiction, all while being completely fleshed out and complex characters, not being defined as nothing but 'strong'. Each has their own personality, strengths, and weaknesses.
How to Avoid Conflict with Pirates

Context: We are a group of fae knights, sworn to the eternal flame. With our knighthood comes armor that had several magic properties including a short distance communication spell. One of the NPCs in our party started developing some really strong nature powers in near god-like scale. Using his newfound abilities, our party created a living boat made of trees to continue our trek. We bound some wind and water elementals to make our journey faster.

GM: As you go along, some of the tree start turning into fruit bearing trees- mostly peaches- and some nut trees. A few days of uneventful journey passes when you finally see a another ship in the distance. The crew you hired identify it as a pirate ship.

Artificer Shapeshifter: “I want to turn into a seagull and go over there to spy on them.”

Pixie fighter: “I’m going with!”

Elven Ranger (also the unit captain): I’m staying on our boat. Like a normal person.

GM: Alright. You get over there and they are busy arguing. Some of them want to board your vessel. They really want that fruit. Most of them think you are a cursed moving island and want nothing to do with you. The Captain is one of the people that want to board.

Fighter: “Can we like… Carve a fruit into a skull and throw it at the captain?”

Artificer: “Oooh, that gives me an idea.”

Ranger (over the com spell) “What are you two planning?”

Artificter: “I’m sorry kssst we must be getting out of range kssssttt you’re breaking up.“

Ranger(ooc): Oh god.

Artificer: Anyways, I’m going to use a shaping spell on the pit of a peach into a skull and then teleport it into the pirate captains hand.

Fighter: "Yeeeeessssssss.”

GM: Oh. My. God. So the captain looks really confused and slowing draws a knife and cuts into the peach. One of the ther pirates says “You gonna share that, Captain?” He looks down at it in horror and says “You can HAVE it."

Fighter: "We should go back to our boat now.”

Artificer: “Yup.”

GM: As you head back to your ship, you notice the pirate ship taking off very, very fast. There are patrols over in that direction and they do not care. They want to get away as fast as possible, even if it means getting caught.

Ranger: When they get back I look at them and say “What. Did. You. Two. Do?”

Fighter: “This is what happens when we don’t have our elven handler.”

Artificer: “To be fair, we were unsupervised."

GM: Later that day, you see the naval patrolling vessels. They circle you a couple times, trying to figure out what you even are before pulling up next to your ship and demanding your papers in a very confused tone. The captain you hired shows the papers, acting like this is all normal. They go through all the official stuff needed. The naval officer then says "One last question: are you haunted? We caught some… errm… mercantile vessel without papers- alright, I’m mincing words, they were pirates- and they said they saw a haunted floating forest?”

During my internship at @runwiththegoldenwolf I designed a moving / timelapse tropical island scene for their 4th birthday party. I put different periods of the day so the goal was to get a loop long enough in order to have all the different moments changing seamlessly from one to another.

Then it was shown on a big 4 screens display during the party. So cool to make!

Summary:
When Louis had moved to the island a year ago, he only wanted two things: to serve good food to good people, and to live on the beach.
Was that too much to ask for?
Apparently the universe thought so, because Louis had only gotten three months of blissful, uninterrupted beach living before Harry Styles moved in to the empty shop next door. Louis was hoping whoever took over the space might be a tour guide, or even another restaurant (with non-competing menu options, of course), but no – he had gotten Harry Styles. The guy who wore Hawaiian dad-shirts unironically. The guy who spent his time making soap by hand out of goat’s milk.

Or, a fluffy AU in which Louis owns a restaurant that’s next door to Harry’s shop, and Louis is completely unaware how smitten he really is.

foreign films 2.0

hi all! follow-up on THIS post.

this is another very long post giving you film and series suggestions in foreign languages - i have included my three target languages and french just to spice things up a bit.

if you’ve seen any of these or want to expand on the post please fell free to do so!! this list is obviously very subjective and contains things that i have seen and enjoyed, so i would love to see a greater variety of genres/directors featured on here.

SPANISH

wakolda - this is straight up one of my favourite films ever. 1950s argentina. a family accomodates a guest at their hotel, unaware that their guest is nazi monster josef mengele.

tiempo sin aire - colombian mum and son escape the horrors of civil war and move to the canary islands, but the mother will not rest until she has found her daughter’s rapist. contains some graphic scenes, not for the faint of heart.

la regenta - adaptation of 19th century classic, both film and miniseries (3 x 1.5 hrs) available on youtube. the film is mediocre but the miniseries stole my heart. pious wife anita torn between sexy local liberal and dark imposing priest. features an absolutely superb carmelo gomez as the cunning don fermin.

el crimen del padre amaro - another c19 classic, this time in a modern latin american setting where hot priest gael garcia b. can no longer fight his feelings for a certain young lady…

ocho apellidos vascos - SOOOOOOOO FUCKING FUNNY!!!!!

la piel que habito - almodóvar, banderas, weird, cringy, intriguing,  “a horror story without screams or frights” [wiki]

[wiki]

el secreto de sus ojos - “Using a nonlinear narrative, the film depicts a judiciary employee and a judge in 1974 … as they investigate a rape and murder case that turns into an obsession for all the people involved, while also following the characters 25 years later reminiscing over the case and unearthing the buried romance between them.”[wiki] RECOMMENDED

vacas - portrays the conflict between two basque families that lasts three generations, starting in 1875.

la princesa de francia - looks ery promising, centred around a group of actors preparing shakespeare’s “love’s labour’s lost”, in buenos aires. read review here

PORTUGUESE

ligações perigosas [BR] - recently released tv globo miniseries, NOT A NOVELA, available on yt. adaptation of laclos’ les liaisons dangereuses. set in 1920s brazil. love, sex, intrigue, DRAMA, 1920s music. great acting by selton mello and alice wegmann. i cried watching this. i love selton mello

justiça [BR] - also a globo miniseries, follows various characters in recife as each of them searches for their own private justice. RECOMMENDED

amores roubados [BR] - yet another miniseries, based on the book “a emparedada da rua nova”. leandro returns to his hometown from SP and becomes involved with three women.

3% [BR] - a dystopian thriller series, apparently available on netflix. “ The show is set in a future wherein people are given a chance to go to the “better side” of a world divided between progress and affluence in the Offshore, and devastation and poverty in the Inland, but only 3% of the candidates succeed.”[wiki] RECOMMENDED

pecado fatal [EU] - angst, drama, shy sweet love but also bitten family secrets. “a young man and woman fall in love on the night they meet, but he takes advantage of her when she gets drunk. although she doesn’t remember anything from that night, something nags at the back of her mind.” not the most accurate description - just watch it its good

o convento [EU] - a literature professor goes to a portuguese convent to confirm a conspiracy theory about shakespeare. this film is actually in english and french as well as portuguese, but i’ve included it here because it was directed by the great manoel de oliveira. stars john malkovich and catherine deneuve.

o dia de desespero [EU] - another one by oliveira, portuguese entry for 1992 oscars. the film shows the final days of the life of famed c19 writer camilo castelo branco, his blindness and eventual suicide. probably available on youtube.

ITALIAN

malena - a classic, story of how a beautiful young woman is ridiculed by her prejudiced community told through the eyes of a young boy lusting over her. very tastefully done and visually very pretty. plus it has monica belucci

la prima notte di quiete - 1972. scruffy alain delon is bitter and elopes with a mysterious student of his who keeps some dark secrets. very beautiful visually, lovely music, unexpected ending. watch this if you want to be sad and vague

lºeredità ferramonti - set in 1880s rome, cunning young woman weds into a split family and wreaks havoc. dominique sanda is brilliant in this. also very nice music by morricone.

FRENCH

des hommes et des dieux - algeria. eight monks live a secluded life in the mountains. when war breaks out, they are forced to make a choice between their faith and their lives. “a luminous tale of faith and heroism”, and also very prettily made.

venus noire - based on the true story of saartije bartman, a black woman showcased in 19th century europe because of her body. explores prejudice, otherness, fetishisation, directed by tunesian abdellatif kechiche. RECOMMENDED.

la dame aux camélias (1981) - isabelle huppert stars as the destitute and illiterate alphonsine who travels to paris and becomes a courtesan. based on alexandre dumas’ novel, of the same title.

SnK Volume 22, released today in English, breaks a long tradition by not including the character sheets we’ve seen in all the previous volumes. Rather, it contains a history of the Eldian people and its conflict with Marley. I thought it was an interesting read so I wanted to share…

The spoils of war acquired by the Survey Corps after having retaken Wall Maria: Three volumes left behind by Grisha Yeager, Eren’s father.

Inside them is the truth of the world, knowledge that Erwin was ready to devote his own heart for.

The Sudden Rise of the Eldian Empire

Over 1,800 years ago, Ymir Fritz, the progenitor of the Eldians, made a contract with the Devil of All Earth and acquired the power of the Titans.

Using the power of the Titans, Ymir cultivated the wastelands, built the roads, and constructed the bridges, bringing abundance to the land and wealth to the Eldian people.

Ymir’s power built the Eldian Empire, and when she died it was divided among the Nine Titans. The Empire then brought ruin to the great and ancient nation of Marley and became conqueror of the continent.

Now possessing the power to become Titans, these Subjects of Ymir (the Eldian people) oppressed and subjugated other races. For about the next 1,700 years, even conducting ethnic cleansing.

Hi! A few things:
Firstly, sorry I haven’t been on here in a few days, between moving out of our old house, navigating an airport and air travel with a cat, and trying to settle said cat temporarily into a house already housing two dogs and three cats I haven’t had much time for internet-ing.
Secondly, and this is a tiny bit belated, thank you for 10K followers!! I started this blog only 3 years ago and I still can’t quite believe how many of you have come along for the ride :’)
Lastly, I’ve finally had to say goodbye to Oahu but I still have quite a bit of unposed photos from my last week or so there, so while physical me is firmly planted in Arizona at the moment, virtual me will still detour back to hawaii from time to time.
Actual lastly, This picture was taken, of course, by @ashleydiscovers, whom I am going to miss with all my heart until our next adventure. I could not possibly have found a better human to experience the island with. As a fairly non-social creature who prefers the company of books and animals and only a few choice humans it was nothing short of a miracle that Ash and I found each other and reached out. But I’m forever grateful that I did because as it turns out I reached out to one of the most exceptional people I’ll know. She has been my rock on that rock in the sea and my time there would not have been the same without her friendship. Love you Ash, thank you for everything<3
