movies: endless love

On July 21, 1983, the legendary Diana Ross took the stage in New York’s Central Park before an audience of over 400,000. Soon after the entertainer began, pouring rain and heavy wind threatened to put an end to the show, but Diana pushed on for much of the set, urging the drenched crowd to remain calm and stay with her. Eventually the torrential storm put an end to the performance, but not before Diana had promised her fans she would return the next day. True to her word, Diana performed the entire concert again on July 22nd for the people of New York.

On this day in music history: August 15, 1981 - “Endless Love” by Diana Ross & Lionel Richie hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 9 weeks, also topping the R&B singles chart for 7 weeks on August 22nd and the Adult Contemporary chart for 3 weeks on September 5th. Written by Lionel Richie, it is the first solo chart topper for former Commodore Richie, and the sixth solo chart topper for former Supreme Ross. Written as the theme for the teen romance drama starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt (also Tom Cruise in his first onscreen appearance), the duet will come about when Richie is asked by director Franco Zeffirelli and producer Jon Peters to write an instrumental theme for their film. The two will change their minds and request that the song have lyrics, and making it a duet with a female artist. Motown executive Suzanne DePasse will suggest Diana Ross, though at the time has just recently left Motown for RCA Records. Hearing Lionel’s song, Diana will agree to sing the duet. Both singers will have to adjust their busy schedules in order to record together, as Ross is in the middle of a concert engagement in Lake Tahoe at the time, and Richie is also busy, working with the Commodores on his final album (“In The Pocket”) with the band. The two will arrange to record their vocals at a small recording studio in Reno, NV, only 50 miles away from the casino where Ross is performing. The two will begin recording their vocals at 3:30 in morning and within an hour and a half will complete their work on the track. Though the film itself is not well received, the song is an immediate smash. Entering the Hot 100 at #54 on July 11, 1981, streaking to the top of the chart five weeks later. “Endless Love” will receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song, with Diana Ross and Lionel Richie performing the song on the live Oscar telecast in 1982. “Endless Love” is certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.

Kdramas that made me cry

First of all, I’m not a crybaby when it comes to kdramas, or anything fictional in that matter. But there are certain scenes that tug my heart so much, mostly in a painful way, and my tears just come rushing out.

A romcom isn’t supposed to make you cry, right? I mean it’s called romantic COMEDY for heaven’s sake. But besides being fun at times, Goong is also poignant. The two leads were forced to be married. Well, they actually had a say in it but it’s not like they agreed because they loved each other. Marriage is supposed to bind a couple for life but divorce was already promised early in the series. And after that came the feelings. Chae Gyung, having to realize it before Shin did was heartbreaking. Even their happy moments make me sad, WITH TEARS. I’m such a baby when it comes to this show. I mean come on, every time they have a moment, some thing goes wrong. I wish they could remake this show and make it all cute!!! It’d be perfect.

Anyway, these are the scenes that made me cry the most.

Their common people date

Their last hug before being separated from each other

I’m re-watching these scenes now and it’s still killing me inside. Going on…

Autumn Tale / Autumn in my Heart

I have never been able to finish this drama but I remember watching it for the first time, and crying nonstop for a couple of episodes. I strongly believe that blood shouldn’t be the sole reason for someone to be called your family. So Eun-suh’s separation from the parents who raised her just killed me. My mom was really concerned when she saw me in front of my laptop, crying so much. Haha you’d think someone died.

Oh my God why did I have to make this post. It’s making me sad. :(

Honestly, I can’t remember any other drama that made me cry even just a bit. So these two would have to do…. for now. :)
