Harry Styles: Singer Opens Up About Famous Flings, Honest New LP
One Direction's Harry Styles goes deep on love, family and his heartfelt new solo debut in our revealing feature.

January 2016. There’s a bench at the top of Primrose Hill, in London, that looks out over the skyline of the city. If you’d passed by it one winter night, you might have seen him sitting there. A lanky guy in a wool hat, overcoat and jogging pants, hands thrust deep into his pockets. Harry Styles had a lot on his mind. He had spent five years as the buoyant fan favorite in One Direction; now, an uncertain future stretched out in front of him. The band had announced an indefinite hiatus. The white noise of adulation was gone, replaced by the hushed sound of the city below.

The fame visited upon Harry Styles in his years with One D was a special kind of mania. With a self-effacing smile, a hint of darkness and the hair invariably described as “tousled,” he became a canvas onto which millions of fans pitched their hopes and dreams. Hell, when he pulled over to the side of the 101 freeway in L.A. and discreetly threw up, the spot became a fan shrine. It’s said the puke was even sold on eBay like pieces of the Berlin Wall. Paul McCartney has interviewed him. Then there was the unauthorized fan-fiction series featuring a punky, sexed-up version of “Harry Styles.” A billion readers followed his virtual exploits. (“Didn’t read it,” comments the nonfiction Styles, “but I hope he gets more than me.”)

But at the height of One D–mania, Styles took a step back. For many, 2016 was a year of lost musical heroes and a toxic new world order. For Styles, it was a search for a new identity that began on that bench overlooking London. What would a solo Harry Styles sound like? A plan came into focus. A song cycle about women and relationships. Ten songs. More of a rock sound. A bold single-color cover to match the working title: Pink. (He quotes the Clash’s Paul Simonon: “Pink is the only true rock & roll colour.”) Many of the details would change over the coming year – including the title, which would end up as Harry Styles – but one word stuck in his head.

THIS MOMENT.

FIRST OFF, I love that everyone else looks up in shock when this giant bolt of lightning crashes down onto the palace, they all have this WHAT THE HOLY FUCKING SHIT!? and then there’s Loki.  Who looks up, sees the same thing they do, but knows that it’s Thor, he’s seen Thor use lightning without his hammer, he knows what’s coming.

And he fucking smirks.

I love that it’s Loki who is the one to know what’s about to happen (Thor is going to wreck all of Hela’s shit), that Loki is the one they cut to when it could have been Valkyrie as well, but instead it’s him.  The one who has watched Thor’s journey from when he was reckless and dangerous to massively powerful and good.

And he fucking smirks.

Loki has seen his brother take this step forward towards being even more powerful than their father, to possibly be more powerful than their sister one day. Loki, who has spent so much of his life seething with envy over Thor, resenting his strength and prominence.  Loki is the one they cut to and show him grinning because hell yes Thor is here and Hela cannot keep him down and the sheer power, the power that would have knocked down the Hulk, the power that will save so many lives this day, that will win Thor even more acclaim and attention, Loki has also taken steps forward to accept that this is who Thor is, that Thor has come this far.

He’s seen Thor grow up, mature, and even see Loki more clearly than Loki can maybe see himself.  He knows this is the way it was meant to be AND HE FUCKING SMIRKS.

Because also, holy shit, that’s so fucking hot and Thor: Ragnarok is keeping the grand tradition of Loki being really fucking turned on by Thor’s fighting skills. If he wasn’t hip deep in draugr himself, you know he’d have sat down on a mountainside to watch all over again.

All too often we are told by liberal environmentalists, and not a few deep ecologists, that it is “we” as a species or, at least, “we” as an amalgam of “anthropocentric” individuals that are responsible for the breakdown of the web of life. I remember an “environmental” presentation staged by the Museum of Natural History in New York during the 1970s in which the public was exposed to a long series of exhibits, each depicting examples of pollution and ecological disruption. The exhibit which closed the presentation carried a startling sign, “The Most Dangerous Animal on Earth.” It consisted simply of a huge mirror which reflected back the person who stood in front of it. I remember a black child standing in front of that mirror while a white school teacher tried to explain the message which this arrogant exhibit tried to convey. Mind you, there was no exhibit of corporate boards of directors planning to deforest a mountainside or of government officials acting in collusion with them.

The Signs As Aliens

Aries: Strong, fierce aliens with skin in various shades of red. They live on a desert planet in large adobe castles with their extended family clan. Known to be very protective, these aliens often battle other clans who threaten the safety of their families and are skilled warriors. However, they are very generous and family oriented during times of peace

Taurus: Small, entrancing aliens with flowing green hair and camouflaged bodies to blend into their thickly forested planet. Animal life is abundant and diverse, with many strange species that these aliens have tamed and live alongside as equals. These aliens are gifted with the ability to communicate with all types of life on their planet, flora and fauna

Gemini: Clever, winged aliens with small bodies that adapt easily to the many climates of their planet. Instead of four seasons, these aliens are accustomed to twelve and live in treetops or on mountainsides. Visitors find this species of alien to be tricky but kind-spirited, often telling riddles and playing pranks on any other species of extraterrestrials passing through their planet

Cancer: Kind, quiet aliens who live in large communities scattered across their planet, which is covered in pink vines and blue clouds that rain a sweet smelling substance similar to water but does not make the surface of the planet wet almost constantly. Small and delicate in stature, these aliens are tougher than they look and often go on dangerous missions throughout the galaxy to deliver care packages to planets in need

Leo: Regal aliens with banded gold and pale pink skin and wide, bright green eyes. They live on a warm, sunny planet covered in white sand, palm trees, and cool, crystal-clear streams. Proud and sophisticated, these aliens live in jewel-studded palaces and welcome visitors to their planet. But be warned - enemies of these aliens face certain death at the jaws of vicious, huge feline creatures that roam the planet and only obey the command of native aliens

Virgo: These aliens have deep purplish skin and dark, shimmering hair. They live on a planet with a mild climate and a permanent state of nighttime, which has led them to become gifted astronomers. Not only do they map stars and constellations visible from their home planet, these aliens also send search parties to other planets to investigate and map every area they can possibly explore. They are also known for their great architectural feats. Quiet and private, these aliens only communicate telepathically

Libra: Elegant aliens with lavender skin and silver hair laced with pearls. Though small, their planet is covered in blue grass and beautiful, roofless marble structures so the sky, which remains clear and starry even in the daytime, is always visible. Known for making a pink beverage similar to wine, these aliens are accepting of most extraterrestrial visitors and very sociable

Scorpio: Reptilian aliens with iridescent red, dark blue, or black scales. They live mostly underwater on a planet that is entirely ocean except for chains of lava rock islands created by active volcanoes. Known to be very mysterious, these aliens rarely make contact with extraterrestrials from other planets and seem to communicate in a way that is impossible for any other alien species to decode

Sagittarius: Daring and adventurous, these aliens come in all shapes, colors, and sizes and rarely stay on one planet for long and instead prefer to venture in groups from one planet to another. They are usually welcomed by other alien species, but sometimes find that trouble has a way of following them wherever they go and end up banished. Because of their fearless nature, banishment does not stop these aliens from returning to some planets which gives them a reputation as outlaws

Capricorn: Tall, steely gray aliens with stunning dark eyes. They live on a completely frozen planet that is always covered in snow, but beneath the snowy surface they built a warm network of bright tunnels and grand rooms with high, decorated ceilings. Although private by nature, these aliens have close relationships with family and friends within their underground community. With their sharp intellect, they have formed one of the most technologically advanced alien societies in the universe

Aquarius: Pale blue or green aliens who wander tirelessly across their planet covered in tall orange grass and stormy lakes filled with strange aquatic creatures. Generally loners, they are never spotted in groups larger than three or four but are very devoted to their companions if they have any. These aliens are skilled magicians and most species of extraterrestrials are wary of venturing to their planet because of their strange powers

Pisces: Silver and sky blue aliens with sleek, shimmering bodies. They live on a planet that is entirely covered with a steaming liquid similar to water, but the steam condenses into a layer of purplish, cloud-like fluff that only this species of alien can live on. They speak in a musical tongue and are known to be extraordinary fortune tellers and clairvoyants

Zermatt, Switzerland

September 25th 2016 with @tamingthetides and @hulahooch

It’s not a proper trip to Switzerland without getting to see the Matterhorn, so we drove three and a half hours across almost all of Switzerland to Zermatt. But since any drive through the Swiss mountains is very scenic, there was no reason to complain, except for the lack of time to stop for photos. We arrived in Zermatt at about one o’clock with absolutely perfect weather surrounding the Matterhorn, which just made the day absolutely perfect! With blue skies around, you could truly see all the peaks in the area and thanks to the nice sunshine, the initial worry of freezing at the top disappeared relatively quickly.

Although the village of Zermatt is beautiful, we quickly jumped on the next train going to the top without exploring the town, since the view from the top is simply unbeatable. And so is the train ride on the Gornergratbahn, which is well worth the relatively expensive ticket, because the experience of winding through the mountainside through the forest, riding on a bridge next to a waterfall above a gorge with views of the village, the whole valley filled with glaciers, and obviously the Matterhorn is simply incomparable to anything else.

After reaching the altitude of 3098 meters (10135 feet), we got out of the train, and started taking as many photos as imaginable (including my current profile pic, thanks Amber), and who wouldn’t when you’re surrounded by a giant glacier, a hotel/observatory, and the tallest peaks in all of Switzerland. Switzerland’s highest peak with the elevation of 4634 meters (15203 feet) - Dufourspitze - is right there behind behind the big glacier. Gornergat is a place I could stay at all day, but since we also had to walk all the way down, we eventually set off on the hike down, but not without Kristi buying some Toblerone first … and Amber using the rubber stamp in the gift-shop to mark everyone’s hand with a little ink Matterhorn.

The next destination was the lake Riffelsee, which is perfect for reflections if there’s no wind (as mentioned before, we got lucky with the weather since there was no wind either). Turns out there’s also a smaller lake behind the big one, which I didn’t know, and turns out no else around did, because we got the smaller lake pretty much all to ourselves.

And if all of that wasn’t cool enough, the probably the most memorable part of the trip was once the sun started to set. The whole mountainside was lit with this beautiful yellow light, but then for a brief moment, it all got dark because the sun was literally behind the Matterhorn! It was so cool to be in the Matterhorn’s shadow, because you could see this dark spot right above the peak surrounded by this bright light and words fail me while trying to describe how cool it was. (Amber was able to capture it a bit better than I was with some of these photos though). Since the way down back to Zermatt was pretty long, we made it back only once it was truly dark after the sun truly set (and not just because being in the Matterhorn’s shadow). We had to get out the headlamps since the end of the trail goes through the forest, where it’s obviously even darker. With the exception of one bad route choice, we made it to the Zermatt train station relatively quickly and safely, and just in time to catch the train back to the car.

Simply a perfect day with the perfect views and company. It was my third time at the Matterhorn, but I was still amazed as if I was there for the first time like Amber and Kristi. And based on the way they enjoyed Zermatt, it’s pretty clear I’ll have to take them there again at some point in the future.
