mother's day presents

Recent Italian Movies (2000-2017)

I was asked to make this post a while back, I’m sorry it took so long. A couple of things before we start:

  • By clicking on each movie’s title, you’ll be redirected to the trailer (with English subtitles when I could find them).
  • I checked, and all movies featured on this list have their own Wikipedia page if you’re looking for further information.
  • Hit me up if you want some help in finding places where you can watch these online.
  • I had to leave out many nice films, and I’ve surely forgotten some: feel free to add more!

I cento passi (2000) – the true story of Sicilian political activist Peppino Impastato, killed by the mafia in 1978 for his overt opposition to the latter. Drama, biopic.

Io non ho paura (2003) – ten-year-old Michele, living in southern Italy in the 1970′s, discovers a hole in the ground where a boy is kept prisoner. Based on a famous novel by Niccolò Ammaniti. Drama, thriller.

Le conseguenze dell’amore (2004) – a middle-aged loner’s life will change completely when he falls in love with a barmaid.

Notte prima degli esami (2006) – Technically speaking not the best movie on this list, but still a must-see if you want to understand what the dreaded high school finals (a.k.a. la maturità) mean for Italian students. Comedy.

La ragazza del lago (2007) – the peace of a little town in northern Italy is disrupted when the body of a young woman is found dead on the lakeshore. Thriller, drama.

Il divo (2008) – the story of Giulio Andreotti, 7-times prime minister of Italy and a controversial figure. Drama, biopic. Great to get a glimpse of the complex world of Italian politics.

Gomorra (2008) – five stories dealing with the Camorra (a criminal organization mostly based in the Naples area) and its relations with the population. Thriller, noir. Probably not the best one to watch if you want to practise Italian, as most lines are delivered in Neapolitan (and are thus incomprehensible to many Italian speakers as well).

Baarìa (2009) – an autobiographic epic in three generations of the Sicilian village where film director Tornatore was born. There are two existing versions, one in Italian and the other in Sicilian. Drama, comedy. I love family sagas, and sobbed uncontrollably I can’t remember exactly at which point in the movie.

La prima cosa bella (2010) – after years of estrangement, Bruno finally goes back to his hometown to visit his dying mother, Anna. Alternating present-day narration and flashbacks, the movie follows the life of a mother and her two children and their strong, albeit problematic, bond. Comedic drama, you might be crying bittersweet tears by the end.

Benvenuti al sud (2010) – stereotypes from both northern and southern Italy meet in the delightful remake of the French movie Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis when Alberto, the manager of a postal service in northern Italy, is banished to Castellabate, obviously located in the South. Comedy.

Basilicata coast to coast (2010) – a music group and a journalist cross the region of Basilicata by foot to attend a music festival. Comedy, adventure.

Habemus papam (2011) – a cardinal is elected pope against his wishes, and needs the help of a therapist to overcome his terror. Half comedy, half drama.

Il capitale umano (2013) – on Christmas Eve, a waiter cycling home from working at a prestigious private school’s gala is hit by a car, whose driver flees, leaving the man close to death. Connected to the accident are two very different families. Drama, thriller.

La grande bellezza (2013) – aging socialite Jep Gambardella tries to find some meaning beyond the lavish display of empty riches plaguing his Roman nights spent between parties. Drama, comedy, won an Oscar when it came out. Chances are you’ll either love it or sleep through it (personally, I liked it quite a lot).

Smetto quando voglio (2014) – driven to despair by their precarious conditions, a group of underpaid (if paid at all) university researchers team up to produce a smart drug still not illegal in Italy to make a fast buck. The unlikely gang is surprisingly successful… Comedy, among the funniest I’ve seen recently.

Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot (2015) – an unlikely (anti)hero rises in the slums of Rome when thief Enzo Ceccotti acquires superpowers by falling into the river Tiber. Sci-fi, action, drama. Superhero movies meet Italian cinema, and it works better than anyone was expecting. Language might be an issue, since everyone is purposefully Very Much from Rome.

Non essere cattivo (2015) – a story of crime, drugs and attempted redemption in the outskirts of Rome. Action, drama. Luca Marinelli is one hell of an actor. Again, the language is more Roman than Italian.

La pazza gioia (2016) – professed countess (and notorious motor-mouth) Beatrice and frail, quiet Donatella (who was “born sad”) flee the psychiatric institution that hosts them. The odd pair will embark on a journey together, looking for fun, love, and – you guessed it – some happiness. Comedy-drama, manages to be hilarious and deeply moving at the same time.

Fuocoammare (2016) – a documentary capturing life on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European migrant crisis.

Perfetti sconosciuti (2016) – seven friends know each other like the back of their hand… or do they? What would happen if, as a playful game around the dinner table, they decided to share with the others every text, call and e-mail they get on their phone? Could they turn out to be total strangers? Witty and thought-provoking comedy with a number of twists.

Fai bei sogni (2016) – a boy struggles to come to terms with his mother’s death. Scenes from the protagonist’s childhood are intertwined with Others depicting his adult life. Drama. Ultimately, Valerio Mastandrea always manages to play someone with mommy issues somehow (he was also Bruno in La prima cosa bella). Drama.

They’re lost, but you can’t pass up a good mud puddle. Lil bb Martha and Helgrind :’)

Happy Mother's Day

“Dean, hurry up! We’re gonna be late!”

You loved that man but you didn’t understand why it took him 45 minutes to do his hair. It was literally 2 inches long.

As you looked around the living room making sure you had everything you needed to spend the day over at Mary and John’s you spotted the gift bag that had ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ written on it. Knowing Dean would probably walk right out the front door and forget it you sat it beside your bag.

“Don’t get your panties in a twist. I’m ready.” Dean said as he was walking down the stairs rolling up the sleeves on his red flannel.

“Finally. I put your mothers gift by my bag so we wouldn’t forget to grab it. I think we have everything else we need already in the car.”

“Alrighty then. Let’s get this show on road!”

Rolling your eyes at him you grabbed your bag and Mary’s present as you walked out the door.
Thirty minutes later you were pulling up to their house. As you were walking up the sidewalk you seen Sam and Jess’s car parked in the driveway.

“I’m glad someone was here on time.” You say hoping that Dean was close enough to hear you.

“Maybe Sam wasn’t as lucky as I was last night.” Winking at you as he walked past you to open the door.

“This is true” you say matter-of-factly.

“We’re here” Dean announced just as Mary came around the corner.

“Happy Mother’s Day mom” Dean told his mother as he gave her a hug and quick kiss on the cheek.

“Thank you sweetie.” She said as she moved from Dean to you. “Hi Y/N, How are you sweetheart?”
“I’m fine Mrs. Winchester-”

“How many times have I got to tell you it’s Mary. Come on in.”

Following Mary through the house she leads you to the dining room where you see Sam and John sitting down at the table.

“Hey Dad. Hey Sam.” Dean said walking past them and to the fridge to grab a beer.

“Hey guys!” You say as Sam pulls you into a hug.

“Hey Y/N, Did you guys get lost?” Sam says jokingly.

“Ha, Why don’t you ask Dean why we were late?”
Just as you had hoped everyone looked right over at Dean.

“Sam wants to know why were late. Do you want to tell 'em or should I?”

“There’s nothing to tell.” He says nonchalantly before taking a long drink of his beer.

“Oh so you spending 45 minutes on your hair is just normal?”

“Wait so that’s why you were late?!” Sam said shock and laughter lacing his words.

“Now thay my work here is done I’m going to go see if your mom needs help in the kitchen.”

“Hey Mary I was wondering if you needed any help getting lunch ready?”

“Oh well John’s going to start the burgers soon and I think everything else has already been fixed and put in the fridge until it’s time to eat. So I think it’s all been taken care of.”

“Well in that case I have something I want to give to you. It’s a little mothers day present from me.”
Reaching down in your purse you pulled out a small box with ribbon around it.

“Honey you didn’t have to get me anything.” She says while she took the ribbon off and opened the box.

“Oh my god!” She said once she seen what was inside. “Are you pregnant?!”

“Yes! But Dean doesn’t know yet. I thought you’d like to be the one who tells him.”

“I’d love to tell him, but are you sure uou don’t want to?”

“I just want to there when you tell him.”
Just then Jess came into th kitchen.

“What is going on in here? I heard Mary holler and ”

“Y/N’s pregnant! But no one else knows so we gotts keep it hush hush for a little bit.”

“Oh my gosh Y/N congratulations!” Jess says while hugging you.

“Thanks. I’m so excited for Mary to tell Dean. He’s going to be so happy.”
A few minutes later you, Jess and Mary joined the guys outside.

“Ah there they are.” John chuckled from behind the grill.

“You just missed an awesome story.” John chuckled from behind the grill.

“I don’t think I wanna know.” Mary said while walking over to check her husbands cooking.

“That’s probably for the best.” Dean said as you sat down beside him at the picnic table.

“Everything is ready except fir the burgers. So when those get done we can eat.” Mary mentioned as she sat down across from you.

Looking uo you seen Mary mouth the words “I’m going to do it soon” and you instantly gor nervous. You knew Dean wanted to be a dad even if he hadn’t said so. You seen the way he would look at little kids when you would pass by them in the supermarket or when you would see them playing with their food at a restaurant. The thought of that being one of your and Dean’s kids brought a smile to your face.

“So mom what’s it like having an entire day dedicated to you?” Sam asked

“Well it’s not just dedicated to me, but to every mother. Whether she is expecting, already has children, or has passed on.”

She answered Sam, looking casually at you when she said 'expecting’. You hoped no one else noticed and if they did you hoped that they wouldn’t think anything of it.

“Which reminds me, someone here has a very important announcement to make. But being the amazing daughter-in-law she is, decided to let me do the honours as a wonderful mother’s day present to me.”

She paused long enough to look around at everyone and then finally said, “John, were gonna be grandparents. Dean and Y/N are having a baby!” She practically jumped off the bench with excitement.

Dean looked over at you with a shocked expression on his face.“ You’re pregnant?!”

You were a little taken aback by his reaction. You thought he would be happy about this.“Y-yeah, I found out about two weeks ago and thought that it would make a nice mothers day present for your mom.”

While you were talking you noticed the expression on Dean’s face never changed. Soon he began running his fingers through his hair and you knew exactly what he was thinking.

“Hey do you wanna go talk inside?”

Without even taking a second thought he said yes and was halfway to the house before you had even gotten up.

“Dean you know you’re going to be an amazing dad, right?”

“How can you be so sure? You say all the time how I’m a silly man child.”

“Yes you can be a silly man child, but when you aren’t being adorably goofy you are the sweetest, most caring, selfless person I know and I’m so glad you are the father of my child.”

“I am pretty adorable.” He says with a cute smirk on his face. “I can’t believe I’m gonna be a dad.”

“How do you think I felt when I found out? I took maybe four at home pregnancy tests and went to two different doctors. I still had a hard time believeing it!”

“You know as soon as we walk out there we are going be attacked with hugs right?” Dean said tilting his chin towards the backyard.

“Yeah, but were having a baby.” Wrapping your arms around his neck and pulled your self close to him.

“We sure are.” He replied before wrapping his arms around your waist and kissing you.

Yo its the night shift greenwalls employee again

Something happened tonight that i cant even be mad at but it was still just. Ugh.

This woman came in wanting photo cards for her daughter and son in law for a late mothers day present for her and a fathers day present for him because they had just had a baby. She stayed for four hours.

Four. Hours.

Every little detail she obsessed over. But she was so nice like you could just tell she was so /lonely/.

Like she made a few questionable comments about not being invited to go see her daughter with her husband and how her daughter wouldn’t let her hold the baby. And trust me, as someone with parent issues myself, i get not trusting your mom, and not wanting to have her in your life after certain instances but this woman was so sad. And you could really tell she was trying to be peppy and upbeat for both her sake and mine but it hurt to see her that way, you know? Like she wanted everything to be perfect since she couldnt be there.

I dont know. It was annoying because she was technologically illiterate and had me walk her through each step of the photo kiosk but honestly like after she saw the cards she hugged me and teared up

It just made me sad. Idk. Knowing what i know about shitty parents and working retail she could have been a manipulator and maybe im a sucker but i felt for her.

Still FOUR HOURS IS RIDICULOUS

you just got your first mother's day present ever? does your child acknowledge you as their mother and didn't before? If so, that is awesome, congratulations!

She’s been following the cues of the people around her, but lately she’s found a fiercely independent streak and this is one of the things that she’ll take no shit on. It’s adorable and I love her so much.

Recently, she got on the bus to come to my house instead of her other mother’s. Her grandmother came to get her, and asked why she came to me.
“I wanted to see Mommy!”
“Well, this isn’t the day for that. You’ll see Daddy tomorrow.”
“I wanted to see Mommy!”

Just… warms my heart. Clearly we’re doing something right.

We have a watercolor assignment in art class and it'll be my first time dealing with watercolors! I've decided to do an ocean thing (it'll be my mother's Day present too! ) got any tips for beginners?

I personally would recommend these supplies:

Koi Waterbrush

Van Gogh palette set (12)

Canson cold press 140lb watercolour paper

Also go bug Hector (aka shittywatercolour) on Twitter and tell him I sent you.

Good luck!
