most amazing comic ever

The Totally Awesome Hulk #15

is the MOST AMAZING COMIC I HAVE EVER READ.

Like seriously, as an Asian American, it covers basically everything I have ever dreamed of in a comic.

There are cosplayers

They talk about representation.

And blatant racial stereotyping.

And microagressions.

And parental expectations of you.

And they fight over the dinner bill. Literally.

Sketchy Behavior | Hellen Jo

Never afraid to speak and/or draw her mind, Los Angeles based artist and illustrator, Hellen Jo and her characters can be described as rough, vulgar, tough, jaded, powerful, bratty and bad-ass - AKA her own brand of femininity. Known for her comic Jin & Jam, and her work as an illustrator and storyboard artist for shows such as Steven Universe and Regular Show, Hellen’s rebellious, and sometimes grotesque artwork and illustrations are redefining Asian American women and women of color in comics. In fact, that’s why Hellen Jo was a must-interviewee for our latest Sketchy Behavior where we talk to her about her love of comics and zines, her antiheroines, and redefining what Asian American women identity is or can be; and what her ultimate dream project realized would be.

Why You Should Be Reading Chang Ge Xing

So what is Chang Ge Xing?

Chang Ge Xing is a Chinese webcomic by Xia Da that is also published in magazines in China and Japan.

It is set during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) in China and Central Asia and follows the adventures of Li Chang Ge, a princess of the ruling Li family, who sets out on a quest for revenge after her uncle kills her family and usurps the throne.

Okay, that’s neat. Now why should I read it?

Alright, here goes. First of all….

Story

Chang Ge Xing weaves a wonderful story about revenge, personal growth, and the effect history can have on the people living in it. The writing holds a deep compassion for its characters and for people in general. Both the protagonists and antagonists are multi-layered characters with valid goals and points-of-view.

Plot

Xia Da is a goddess of plotting. The storyline travels its way across China and Central Asia with twists and turns that are entirely unexpected, but also clear and well-executed. Chang Ge’s journey has an excellent mix of adventure, action, character drama, and intrigue.

Characters

Li Chang Ge:

Chang Ge is a competent badass with the mind of a political chess-master. More importantly, however, she is human and thus very capable of both triumph and failure. Aspects of her personality (such as her skill at lying and keeping track of multiple identities) can be both the key to her success and her most fatal flaw.

She is above all else a (covertly) compassionate person.

Ashina Sun:

Sun is a general of the Eastern Turkic Khaganate (think central Asian nomadic kingdom) and the adopted son of the Great Khan. He is a straight-forward, loyal guy with a deep dislike of intrigue. Sun starts off as basically a jerk (large active armies are rarely enlightened places), but grows into a thoughtful, mature person.

He likes to make impulsive decisions, to the distress of his subordinates.

Mimiguli:

Mimi is a young Uighur woman who Chang Ge saves from execution. She hides a tragic past behind her care-free demeanor. There is more to this gal than meets the eye.

Also she and Chang Ge are kind of a thing.

Mujin:

Mujin is Ashina Sun’s very put-upon subordinate. He is very organized and observant. He and Sun have known each other since they were kids.

Qin:

Qin is an old trickster who pledges himself to Chang Ge’s cause. He has served in shadows of many lords over the course of his life.

Jin Dan:

She is the renowned mistress of a Daoist temple that Chang Ge visits. She is very wise and acts as a mentor towards Chang Ge.

Ashina She Er:

He is a clever general in the Turkish army and the nephew of the Great Khan.  She Er intends connive and manipulate his way to the Turkish throne. He and Sun are enemies.

Li Shimin/Emperor Taizong:

Li Shimin is Chang Ge’s uncle and the object her revenge.

There are also a whole bunch more characters that I could wax poetic about, but I’m trying to keep this post at an acceptable length.

Art:

The art in this series is incredible. It’s super detailed and lovely.

I mean…..

CHECK

IT

OUT

Seriously, Xia Da must have sold her soul to attain this kind of talent. She is a god-level artist.

History:

Chang Ge takes place in the background of real historical events such as the Xuanwu gate incident and the uighur/khitan/xueyantuo rebellion against the Turks in 627. The series pays close attention to historical accuracy in both plot and setting. Actual historical figures are included in the narrative alongside the fictional characters.

At the same time, Xia Da knows how to balance fiction vs. fact. She keeps the conflicts clear and concise while also throwing the occasional bone to history nerds such as myself.

So yeah, this comic is incredible and you should go read it.

'The New Mutants' Details Revealed: X-Men Franchise Goes Horror
Director Josh Boone on the ‘very, very different’ Maisie Williams X-Men project

The New Mutants, the long anticipated X-Men spinoff movie, is going to be a comic book film that goes in an unusual direction. “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” director Josh Boone says. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

The New Mutants, which was created by Chris Claremont in the early ’80s, is about a group of teenage mutants, a kind of superheroes-in-training, who must learn to control their powers. When artist Bill Sienkiewicz — whom Boone calls “one of the most amazing comic book artists ever” — came aboard for No. 18 in 1984, the series took a turn for what Boone describes as, “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”

It’s this run of the comic that inspired what we’ll see in The New Mutants which is currently scheduled for a spring 2018 release (and shooting for a PG-13 rating). Boone is keeping mum on actual plot details, but a source close to the project explained how mutants are at their most dangerous (both to themselves and others) when their powers are new. (Like, say, their teenage years!) Says the source: “Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.”

“We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can.”

Boone wants to assure fellow fans that he’s one of them and that he’s taking this responsibility very, very seriously. “You can’t have a bigger nerd or fan making this. It’s so important to me. I’m not the 12-year-old who decided to write Stephen King a letter and loved Marvel Comics anymore, but I try to hold myself accountable to that kid. Because that kid is what keeps me from becoming a Hollywood whore,” he says with a laugh.

GO READ THIS IF YOU AREN’T. Seriously, it’s the most amazing fan comic I have ever seen and it tops the hell out of a lot of the licensed comics. @laivaaja Do you how hard it was to read this when the art was just so perfect? I spent ages just staring at all the details: especially the panel with the closeup of the stormtrooper’s helmet and the gash on it. Fucking hell, you blow me away every damn time! Piett’s face! Veers’s face! The way you took the time to give every officer a different face! Damn! Just fucking damn! <3 And then the speech! Why can’t I crawl into the screen and join them? I’m motivated now! I’m gonna go help. The ending was perfect too. Fuck, let me hop on a plane and just come love you.

Aaaah thanks for saying all that! Hmm, from a storytelling point it is not probably good that the reader gets stuck on each panel, but I take that as a great compliment!

Damn yes these imperials needs their faces to be shown, their emotions be readable - I oppose covering their faces like in SW Rebels… or making them all evil to the core in a patronizing attempt to educate the viewer like a three-year-old, which Star Wars directors are guilty of too often.

I believe that Piett is a man with high moral standards, and most likely all of the people in that hangar think that they are the good guys. They believe that they are doing the right thing, that’s why they are speaking about loyalty and honour.

But what else could I produce: I am total imperial trash and I would be there in the middle cheering after that speech. :D

Yes. Let’s love each other, and our imperial boys. ;D

Hi! I was wondering for someone who hasn't read any Marvel comics, which issues are the best ones for getting into Deadpool/Spideypool? Thanks!

this message ABSOLUTELY MADE MY DAY /rubs my hands together so fast they catch fire AAAAAA

Ok so. I’m automatically gonna jump straight into suggesting the Deadpool comic run that started in 2012 (first collected volume right here). You get to know Wade’s character really well (amazing writers) AND it’s genuinely one of the most entertaining comics I’ve ever read. Then I’m going to recommend digging up the Deadpool Annual #2 because it legit destroys me (you can also find it in this collected vol which is worth it because anything with Deadpool is a. hilarious and b. worth it)

THEN I’m gonna recommend the title that’s running right now and the current bane of my existence/light of my life, Spider-Man/Deadpool. This one is so new you could stroll into your local comic book store and most likely pick up the three issues straight off the new release shelves. It’s also SO. GOOD. The interaction and dialogue between Peter and Wade is ELECTRIC. I can’t read these comics in public because I’m either laughing my ass off or biting my knuckle fighting off tears or about to punch through several walls. The fourth issue comes out in a week (april 13th…. I have an alarm set in my phone) and I’m SO IMPATIENT AGH

Anyway. I don’t have much experience with spider-man titles but I will admit I’ve done an insane amount of wikipedia/marvel wikia reading to understand the timelines and where the characters are at…. like what happened in Superior Spider-Man is important in Spider-Man/Deadpool, and Secret Wars has made everything crazy, and like… Peter reveals his secret identity in Civil War but by the time it’s to Spider-Man/Deadpool that continuity has changed and I highly recommend just googling things that you have questions about.

I hope I haven’t overwhelmed you. I love marvel but it’s also scary-big. But I promise that Wade (and spideypool, holy hell) are worth it. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!!!

WHO IS BECKY????

BECKY ALBRIGHT IS THE MOST AMAZING PERSON EVER AND SHE WAS ONLY IN A SINGLE BATMAN COMIC BUT I LOVE HER SO MUCH AND SHE’S LITERALLY THE COOLIEST SHE’S A DISABLED GINGER COLLEGE GIRL WHO STUDIES LAW AND AFTER SHE TESTIFIES AGAINST SCARECROW HE’S LIKE WELL SHUCKS I GUESS I HAVE TO KILL YOU BUT !!! PLOT TWIST !!! HER DEEPEST FEARS ARE BEING REJECTED BY EVERYONE !!! JUST LIKE HIS DEEPEST FEARS !!! CLEARLY THIS MEANS THEY ARE SOUL MATES ??? SO HE GETS RIDICULOUSLY EMBARRASSINGLY OBSESSED WITH HER AND MAKES HER A COSTUME AND IS ALL LIKE BECKY WE’RE DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER COME FEAR WITH ME AND SHE’S JUST LIKE WHAT THE FUCK NO DUDE LEAVE ME ALONE I JUST WANT TO STUDY LAW AND BE A WELL-WRITTEN FEMALE CHARACTER AND IT’S JUST??? THE PLOT IS REALLY IFFY AND KIND OF DUMB (WHY WOULD JONATHAN HAVE TO BE TESTIFIED AGAINST IN COURT??? HE IS A CONVICTED FELON??? HE ESCAPES FROM ARKHAM AND HANGS OUT IN HIS COSTUME IN A LAIR WITH HENCHMEN BUT WHEN BATMAN SHOWS UP HE’S LIKE HM WELL NOTHING SHADY HERE CARRY ON WITH YOUR BUSINESS CRANE???) SO LIKE IT’S KIND OF HILARIOUSLY BAD BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT’S A REALLY GREAT STORY IMO BECAUSE

  • MAIN CHARACTER IS A GIRL!!! WHO USES A CANE!!! AND IS NOT CONVENTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE!!! AND DOESN’T GET FRIDGED IN ANY WAY!!! AND DOESN’T HAVE TIME FOR ANY OF JONATHAN’S MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL CRAP!!! SHE IS LITERALLY THE BEST
  • PUTS JONATHAN IN A REALLY UNIQUE POSITION WHERE HE’S SIMULTANEOUSLY SMITTEN AS A KITTEN OVER THIS EMPOWERED WORLDLY YOUNG WOMAN WHO OVERCAME ADVERSITY AND WANTS HER TO TEACH HIM HER WAYS BUT ALSO TOTALLY ABHORS HER FOR BEING ABLE TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY WHEN HE COULDN’T AND LIKE LITERALLY THE ENTIRE PREMISE THAT HIS VIEW OF REALITY IS BUILT ON IS THREATENED BY THIS GIRL WHO DOESN’T HAVE TIME FOR ANY OF HIS ESCAPIST FANTASY SHIT
  • LITERALLY LIKE IT TAKES THIS WHOLE “MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL WILL FIX THE BROKEN BOY WITH LOVE” TWILIGHT ESCAPIST FANTASY NARRATIVE AND RIPS IT TO SHREDS IN A MATTER OF 20-30 PAGES
  • (I’M NOT SAYING YOU’RE GROSS IF YOU FANTASIZE ABOUT VILLAINS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT LIKE VILLAINS ARE THE FUCKING SHIT AND I LOVE THEM BUT THIS COMIC IS JUST A REALLY AWESOME SORT OF REMINDER THAT LIKE THERE IS A REASON THESE PEOPLE ARE VILLAINS AND REALISTICALLY THEY’RE NOT GOING TO JUST GET BETTER BECAUSE THEY FIND LOVE AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT THEY’RE IN LOVE WITH AN IDEA RATHER THAN AN ACTUAL PERSON [RIDDLER’S STORY IN JOKER’S ASYLUM IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS] AND THE LEADING LADY DOESN’T EVEN DIE !!!!!!!!)
  • ALSO THE ART IS P NEAT AND THERE ARE SOME FANTASTIC PANELS OF JON BEING A MUPPET/MAKING STUPID FACES
  • SERIOUSLY YOU CAN READ THE WHOLE THING ON DEVIANTART IT’S SUCH AN IMPORTANT COMIC GO READ IT RIGHT MEOW

The Young Fire Mage

Here, have a Sovereign universe folk tale. I’ll explain later.

Once, there was a young fire mage that lived just outside the city. She loved to read and study, because of this she thought she was very wise. She would talk and talk as they weaved and sewed. “You need to see the sea.” She would say. “But, my dear, you’ve never even seen the mountains.” Her mother would respond. The young mage shook her head and went on about the sea.

When the works were made the young fire mage begged to see the city. “I want to see the travellers, they have such wonderful tattoos.” Her mother responded, “But you have wonderful tattoos, and you’ve hardly learned to use them.” The young fire mage begged and pleaded. She wanted to see a water mage she cried.

Her mother sighed and brought her to the city. The young mage saw many different mages. She told them of how great their kingdoms were and wonderful it was to meet them. “I’d much rather live by the sea.” She would whine. “But you live here.” Her mother insisted. The water mages agreed with the young mage.

When the fire mages went home the young mage would not be quiet. She talked more and more when they worked. She whimpered and whined when they left for the city without her. And when the weavers sold their goods the water mages would beg to see the girl. Soon the mother became fed up and took the girl back to the city. Each day she spoke less and less of fire and more of water, and the young girl fell for a water mage.

And so the girl begged and pleaded and whined, “I love him, let us marry and live by the sea.” Her mother could hardly believe it. She went to speak but the young mage would never listen.  “If you go, I won’t go with you.”

The young mage went alone. She saw the sea for the first time, and she felt it was as lovely as she was expected. She married by sea and the sky began to storm. The water mages hid in the sea, and they invited her into the waves. She knew that her husband would keep her safe, so she waded into the sea. But as her mother suspected the girl knew nothing of water. The young mage drowned in the sea.
