morning breeze walk

Just Don't Let Go- chapter 2

The events of the past 15 minutes continued on in Stiles’ head.  He still wasn’t really sure how he got from point A to point B. One minute he was knocking back spiked punch, sadly watching Lydia dance with Aiden, the next Y/N was kissing him.  And he was kissing her back. He couldn’t deny that he had thought about what it would be like to kiss her, but he never thought he actually would. Since the minute she got to Beacon Hills she was unattainable. Not only was she a member of Jackson’s family, something he wanted to avoid, but she was attached to Isaac at the mouth.  They were only going to be friends, that much was certain.

But now, his arms were secure around her waist, her body felt so perfect against his, he couldn’t stop the voice in his head that told him this felt… good.  Her head was pressed against his chest and he was sure she could hear the sound of his heart beating. Was it pounding? It felt like it was pounding.  Y/N had never made him feel that way before.

He was broken out of his thoughts by the sound of her voice. He cleared his throat before responding.  “Yeah?”

“This is going to sound really stupid,” she began and then looked up at him, “but is Isaac watching?”

The corner of his mouth turned up a little and he glanced over towards where he’d seen Isaac and Allison last.  Allison’s back was facing him but over her head he could see Isaac standing behind her.  His eyes were set on them, but he didn’t look mad, he looked surprised.  That was something he could understand, he was surprised as well.

“Yep.  He’s, uh, he’s definitely watching.  He’s not gonna like turn into a werewolf and like kick my ass or something is he?”

Y/N laughed and shook her head. Their eyes connected as her fingers played with the short dark hair at the nape of his neck, it was probably something she didn’t even realize she was doing.  “I’m pretty sure Isaac is over me and is definitely into Allison.  I just wanted him to see that I can move on too.  Not that you and I are-“

“No,” he replied quickly.  They definitely weren’t a thing, were they? She had just kissed him to help him get his mind off Lydia and to help herself stop thinking about Isaac.  She was just helping him out, they were helping each other out.  “We’re just… doing each other a favor.”

“Right,” Y/N replied with a smile before glancing down at the ground.  When she tilted her head back up she laughed.  “And just in case you were wondering, Lydia saw that kiss.”

He didn’t know if that was a good or a bad thing.  Maybe like Y/N he just needed Lydia to see him moving on.  Maybe he just needed to move on completely. There were so many thoughts going on in his head at the moment he wasn’t sure what was right and what was wrong.  He glanced around the gym and saw Scott dancing with the new girl Kira.  Scott was moving on.  Everyone was.  He and Y/N had to move on to.  And even if they weren’t really moving on with each other, they could help get a jump start.

After their first dance the time seemed to fly by and he was actually enjoying himself.  It turned out Y/N was a pretty great distraction.  They walked back over to the table where they had placed their things and saw Scott with Kira. She smiled at him shyly before waving to Stiles and Y/N and heading back to where her belongings were.

“So how was that?” Y/N asked excitedly.

“I like Kira,” Scott replied with a smile.  “She’s really nice.”

“Yeah.  But do you like her?”

Stiles shook his head.  He could practically see Y/N plotting out different scenarios to get the two of them together.  But Scott deserved to have someone he liked and who could make him smile.  It wasn’t a secret that he was having a hard time getting over Allison.  They were all a sad bunch, pining over people who didn’t feel the same way.

“I don’t know,” Scott replied.  “I don’t really know her.”

“Well get to know her!” Y/N proclaimed and linked her arm through Scott’s.  She grabbed her clutch off one of the chairs and motioned for Stiles to join them.  The dance was almost over, most people had already left and it was clear she was ready to go as well.  He walked up beside them and they started towards the doors.  As they walked he couldn’t stop himself from glancing up at the large painted banner that was displayed across the wall.

Aobcen Lilhs Npsgri Glfin

He squinted and blinked his eyes a few times trying to tell if that helped him read correctly.  The words were still spelled in a way that just didn’t make sense to him.  They weren’t even words, just a collection of letters.  “What does that sign say?” he asked.

Scott and Y/N looked up at the banner and she laughed.  “Beacon Hills Spring Fling. What did you forget how to read or something?”

“Are you sure?” Stiles asked and rubbed his hand over his face.  “Are you sure it says that?”

“Yeah,” Scott replied and looked at his best friend curiously.  “What’s up with you? Did you have to much spiked punch or something?”

He stared at the sign almost willing it to make sense but the more he looked at it the more frustrated he became.  No matter how long he stared at it, he couldn’t read it.  He knew he wasn’t drunk, so what was his problem? He shook his head and looked away from the sign.  “Yeah that’s probably it.  Let’s just go.”

Stiles shot up in bed in a cold sweat.  His mind had been racing before he had managed to get himself asleep and when he did images of him at the Nemeton filled his dreams.  He was having dreams in his dreams.  It had started with him waking up in his bed then leaving his room and once he’d gone through the door he was in the hallway at school.  Then suddenly he stood before the Nemeton.  Shutting his eyes tight he tried to get himself to wake up. It had to have been a dream.  Looking down at his hands he quickly counted his fingers.  5.  On each hand.

Was this a dream?

Suddenly he was back in his bed, in his room.  His breath was unsteady and he could feel that he was covered in sweat.  He looked down at his hands again and counted his fingers before falling back against his pillow that was now damp with his sweat.  He took deep breaths, trying to get his breathing back under control.

He looked over at the clock on his dresser and saw that his alarm clock was going to go off soon.  The day after the dance he had tried to avoid reading things, worried that he might not be able to.  Besides that, he thought about Y/N.  When he wasn’t freaking out over misspelled words he was replaying their kiss.  It calmed him down to think about her lips on his.  Her kiss had done something to him and he didn’t know what it was.

When the obnoxious beeping on the clock began he quickly slapped his hand on the top.  He had too much on his mind right now to even worry about falling back asleep.  Maybe for once school could be a good thing.  It could be a distraction.

Dragging himself out of bed he pulled off his t-shirt before tossing it into a nearby hamper.  He grabbed a t-shirt and a red plaid button up and slipped them both on before grabbing a pair of jeans off the floor.  He stepped into a faded pair of grey Nikes and headed towards the bathroom to finish getting ready.  Looking at himself in the mirror he noticed how tired his eyes looked.  Had he really slept that bad all night?

After he was ready he grabbed his back pack and headed down the stairs.  The house was quiet since his dad had already left for work. As he walked outside he was met with a cool morning breeze while he walked towards his Jeep.  He opened the door and jumped into the driver’s seat.  Before backing out he noticed a pink purse on the passenger seat.  He smiled as he picked it up and opened his backpack before dropping it inside.

On the drive to school his mind wandered to Y/N once more. The way she smiled, the way she laughed and the way she kissed.  He’d seen her smile and heard her laugh plenty of times since he’d met her, but since he kissed her he couldn’t stop thinking about them.  Her smile was sweet and infectious.  Now that he’d started, he couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Stepping on the break he looked at the sign in front of him.

“Are you kidding me?” he asked quietly.  Now he was really begging to freak out.  At least at the dance he could pretend that alcohol had caused his inability to read.  What was his excuse now? Lack of sleep? Or was there seriously something wrong with him? He accelerated once more and hurried to school.  He needed to talk to Scott about this.

Pulling into the parking lot he saw Scott pulling up on his bike.  He turned off the engine before jumping out of the door and making his way over to him.  “Have you ever heard of people losing the ability to read?”

“What?” Scott asked.

“I’m still not reading things right.  I thought it was just a weird one time thing at the dance but it’s still happening.  And I hardly got any sleep this weekend.”

“Well maybe that’s what your problem is.  It could be the whole lack of sleep that’s causing it.  I’m sure it’s nothing.”

“What if it’s not?” Stiles asked, suddenly panicking.  “Deaton said we were going to be inviting weird things here when we saved our parents.  What if this is just the start of it?”

A strange look crossed Scott’s face and Stiles’ straightened up.  “What?”

“I haven’t had the reading problems but… This weird thing’s been happening with my shadow.  Like it’s not mine, it’s not human. It’s a wolf. I’m worried that if I change… I might not change back.”

“Is it just us who’s having these weird things go on? I mean what about Allison? Has she had any weird things happen to her?”

“You mean like seeing my dead aunt?”

They turned and saw Allison walking towards them with Lydia by her side.  “Yeah.  I’ve had some weird things happen to me, too.”

Y/N sat at one of the picnic tables during her study hall.  It was beginning to get warm out so she pushed her oversized cream colored sweater off her shoulders leaving her in a light pink lacy tank top and a pair of denim shorts.  Her wavy dark hair was down her back falling in its usual waves.  She tapped her pen to her notebook to the beat of the song that played through her headphones. Undressed by Kim Cesarion played in her ears while she tried to focus on taking notes on her history assignment.  She was broken out of her thoughts when suddenly two large shadows covered her.  She took a headphone out of her ear and turned around to face whoever was behind her.

“Can I help you?” she asked and leaned back against the table.

Ethan and Aiden stood in front of her, towering over her. The sight of them still sent a shiver of fear up her back but she tried to play it off.  She didn’t want them knowing she was actually terrified of them.  Not only had they killed Boyd, they had personal issues with Isaac.  Unfortunately she had found herself in the middle of that.

It had only been a few weeks since Isaac had told her the truth about the pack.  She walked to her car one night after working out at the rec center.  Her gym back was slung over her shoulder and she tried to walk quickly as her hair was wet from the pool and the cold night air was making her shiver.  When she reached her car she fumbled with her keys in hand trying to find the right one.

“Looks like you have your hands full.”

She turned around and saw Ethan and Aiden standing in the parking lot a few feet away from her.  The way they walked towards her, it was predatory. They stalked towards her.  She turned around and quickly tried to get her car unlocked but as she tried to find the button she dropped her keys to the ground.

“Explain to me how it is a girl like you is with a loser like Isaac?” Aiden asked, standing close to her.  She pressed her back up to her car and tried to control her breathing.  She really didn’t want to show any fear. But that was hard with two alphas in your face.

Suddenly Aiden had his teeth bared and his eyes were a glowing red.  She opened her mouth to scream when Ethan quickly put his hand over her mouth.  “Aiden,” he said in a warning tone.  “You know the plan.”

“I just wanted to scare her a little bit.”

Tears collected in her eyes as they forced her into the backseat of her own car.  They got in the front and drove out of the parking lot with speed.  Before she knew it they had pulled up outside of Derek’s loft.  When they grabbed her and pulled her out of the car she saw the rest of the Alpha Pack was waiting for them.  Once they were all upstairs they saw Derek, Isaac and Boyd.

Isaac let out a growl when he saw her with them.  He took a step forward before Derek stepped in front of him.  Everything happened so fast.  Stiles and Lydia showed up and Ethan tossed her to the ground before turning and charging towards Isaac.  Stiles grabbed Y/N by the hand and helped her up before standing in front of her and Lydia, shielding them from the alphas.

That was the night Boyd had been killed.

Now the two who were responsible for his death stood in front of her, looking at her like nothing had ever happened between them.  She kinked and eyebrow and shrugged her shoulders.  “Well?”

“We wanted to apologize,” Ethan said finally.

“For what exactly? For messing with Isaac? Kidnapping me? Or for killing Boyd?” she said the last part in a whisper.  Whoever was around shouldn’t hear this conversation. As far as everyone knew Boyd’s death had been a terrible accident.  Not a murder.

“All of it,” Ethan continued.  “We’re trying to turn over a new leaf where we don’t kill and terrorize people.  We thought we could start by apologizing to you.”

She stared at him for another minute before looking at Aiden who had yet to say anything to her.  “What about you?”

“I’m sorry, too,” he mumbled.  She could tell it was hard for him to apologize for anything.

“Whatever,” she replied.  “You apologized so-“

“Is there a problem here?”

She instantly recognized that voice and turned quickly to see Isaac.  He was standing next to the table with his arms crossed over his chest and the look in his eyes gave way to the fact that he was pissed off.  He took a few steps around the table closer to the twins and she stood up quickly standing between them.  The last thing they needed was a werewolf fight breaking out in school.  It was bad enough when they had gotten in a fist fight.

“It’s nothing,” she said and put a hand on Isaac’s chest to push him back.  “They were just leaving.”

Isaac continued to stare them down and he said, “don’t ever talk to her.”

The twins smirked before turning around and walking away.  Y/N grabbed her sweater off the bench and slipped it back on.  “I don’t need you to do that.  It’s not your job to come protect me anymore.”

“I don’t like them talking to you.  Not after everything. I don’t even want them near you.”

“What? I can’t look out for you? We’re not even friends anymore?” he asked.

“I need a little more time before we can just be palling around.”

He scoffed.  “You didn’t need that much time to move on to Stiles.”

She laughed.  “Says the guy who had feelings for another girl while we were still together.” He rolled his eyes and she grabbed her messenger bag and slung it over her shoulder.  “Look.  I want us to be friends, I just need a little more time.  But in the meantime, you can just focus on Allison and I’ll do my own thing, ok?”

He didn’t say anything but he walked along side of her as she made her way across the quad.  They saw another long table that was currently being occupied by Scott, Stiles, Lydia and Allison.  They could tell they were talking in hushed tones and they looked up at the two of them as they joined them at the table.  Isaac sat down beside Allison and Y/N next to Scott.  “What’s going on?” Isaac asked.

“Turns out I’m no longer the crazy one,” Lydia said and clapped her hands together.  “This one can’t read,” she said pointing to Stiles, “Allison’s seeing her dead aunt and Scott here thinks he might permanently become a wolf.  Crazy weekend, huh?”

“Does this have something to do with the Nemeton?” Y/N asked. “Is this a part of what could happen to you guys because of it? I mean Deaton said something bad could happen.”

“Yeah what if you guys die or something?” Isaac said and everyone looked at him.  “I just mean what if she’s right and this is just the start before you go completely insane or just die.”

“Is that you being helpful?” Stiles asked.  “If that’s helpful then you really suck at it.”

“Being helpful is sort of new to me,” Isaac replied and the two of them stared at each other for a few more seconds before the bell rang.

“We’ll talk to Deaton after school,” Scott said.  “If anyone’s going to know what to do it’ll be him.”

Y/N stood up and began to walk towards the stairs the lead toward the building.  Isaac, Lydia and Allison were already up the steps and at the door and Scott had hung back to talk to Kira who was making her way towards school.  “I have something that belongs to you.”

Y/N turned and saw Stiles jog up next to her.  He swung his bag around to his front and pulled open the zipper and reached inside.  He retrieved her pink clutch and held it out to her.  “You left this in my car the other night.”

“There it is!” she exclaimed and took it in her hands.  “I’ve been looking for it everywhere.  Thanks Stiles.”

“Yeah,” he replied with smile.

“So um,” she began, “I just wanted to make sure that we’re still cool after the other night.  I was going to text you but I thought we should just talk in person.  We’re friends right?”

“Yeah,” he said and nodded his head, “absolutely.”

“Good.  I don’t want to mess that up or anything. I just wanted us to have fun the other night and before I knew it, I was kissing you.”

“Well that was fun,” he replied with a smirk.

Y/N laughed.  “Glad you think so.  You’re a pretty good kisser Stilinski.”

He could feel a blush on his cheeks and he tilted his head down to look at the ground and ran his hand over the back of his neck.  He wanted to tell her how great of a kisser she was too.  And that he had hardly stopped thinking about kissing her since that night.  But instead he cleared his throat.  “We’re gonna be late for history.”

She nodded and the two of them walked inside and hurried down the hall towards their class.  He held the door open for her as they walked into class just before the late bell rang.  They sat in the two unoccupied seats near Scott and Stiles opened his backpack and reached for his book.  When he pulled it out he set it on his desk and flipped it open.  His eyes scanned the pages and his heart began to race as he realized all the words were jumbled and misspelled.

Mr. Yukimura stood in front of the class and began speaking. “We can pick up where we left off on Friday in chapter 8.  Do I have any volunteers to come and read the first passage out loud to the class?”

Everyone slumped in their seats and avoided looking at the teacher hoping he wouldn’t call them out.  He looked around the room before his eyes settled on Stiles.  He was clearly not paying attention.

“How about.. Mr. Stilinski.”

Stiles looked up at the mention of his name and saw Mr. Yukimura staring at him.  “I’m sorry?”

“Come up and read the first passage to the class.”

“Oh,” Stiles replied, “eh, no thanks I’m good.”

The sound of laughter filled the class but Mr. Yukimura wasn’t among them.  “It wasn’t a question.”

Stiles grabbed his book and walked up to the front of the class.  His heart pounded in his chest and he felt like he might pass out.  He hated reading out loud anyway, but today it was a completely different story.  He set his book down and looked over the page again, silently praying that the words were right.  They weren’t. Suddenly he could feel a panic attack coming over him.

Part One:
