No one really cared about me in NYC so it wasn’t very hard moving for me. If anything, I was happy we were moving to a smaller town.
On my first day of school, the guy who showed me around the school and walked me to my classes was really nice and pretty cute. His name was Matt. Matthew Espinosa. He was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt with an outline of a crown that looks like a drawing that a 7 year old would draw. He also had many bracelets on both his wrists. Then I noticed a big scar on his left leg right above his left knee cap. His brown eyes shimmered as he ran his hand through his dirty blonde hair. He’s at least 6 feet tall. Almost a full 3 inches taller than me. His voice is somewhat soothing to me. It’s like a higher version of my dad’s voice. I miss my dad so much.
His locker was right next to mine.
“So you’re Morgan right?” he asked as I opened my locker.
“Yeah thats me” I reply.
“Well I’m Matthew Lee Espinosa I’m gonna show you to your classes and stuff today” he said confidently while smiling at me.
“Cool” I said under my breath. I hope he hasn’t seen my scars.
“Okay so what do you have first period?” He asks me.
“Um Science room 309”
“I’m in that class too!” We walk to class together and we were talking up a storm. I found out that he’s vine famous. I wouldn’t know because I don’t have a phone, I don’t have the money. But I know about Instagram, Twitter, Vine and all that stuff. Plus he tours the US with this thing called Magcon. I heard of it a few times.
When we got to class we chose a seat next to each other. We compared schedules and it turns out we have all our academic classes and gym together. It’s nice to know at least one person I know is most of my classes.
A short guy with a snapback on backwards wearing baggy black pants and a plain white t-shirt sits next to Matt
“This is my best friend Carter. Carter, this is the new girl Morgan” Matt says.
“Hi” I wave shyly hoping my sleeve doesn’t come up, but it does.
(Matt’s POV) I kind of like Morgan, but I doubt she even likes me. We’re so different but that’s what I love. She seemed sort of, I don’t know how to explain it, sad? When she waved to Carter her sleeve came up and that was when I knew why she seemed like that. I acted like I didn’t see because she seemed embarrassed. I looked over at Carter and made sure he acted like he didn’t see either. He didn’t. Good.
Oh my gosh what if Matt saw my scars. What if Carter did and he tells Matt? What if the whole class saw? I pull my sleeve up right away.
The rest of class we sit in science and listen to Mrs. Merril drone on and on about “what we’re going to learn” and “the rules” boring ugh. Second period came and that was Geography. I heard the geography teacher was really fun. I walked to room 321 with Matt and we sat next to each other again.
At lunch, everyone was staring at me because I was sitting with Matt and his friends. I brushed it off and continued talking and getting to know Matt and his friends better. They were very welcoming and I really appreciated that.
The rest of the day was boring as hell. The sounds of the obnoxious people in the hallways annoyed me a little. The smell of different perfumes all together made me want to puke.
After school I went to my locker and while I was closing it I felt a tap on my shoulder.
“Can I walk with you?” Matt asked.
“Um sure.” I reply, “But I walk to my house, I don’t take the bus.”
“Then I’ll walk you home” Matt said with a smile.
While we were walking out of school I saw a group of girls, they were basically human versions of Barbie. They were staring at me and Matt and whispering.
“They’re bitches. The one over there,” Matt pointed at the girl in the middle wearing a short skirt, crop top and very expensive jewelry, “that’s Hannah. She’s the most stuck up girl you could ever know. Don’t try to be her friend. All of her friends are almost exactly like her. I don’t know how I ever dated her.” Matt facepalmed while he was saying that. I laughed.
“Why’d you date her?” I questioned after I was done laughing.
“Well I guess you could say, I was a dumbass Freshman and Sophmore years.” Matt laughed. “So enough about me, tell me about you” He said after a minute of silence.
“There’s nothing about me that’s really interesting.” I reply. “Did I ask the most interesting thing about you? Nope. Now tell me about yourself like what’s your favorite color, favorite movie, book, song, sports, your family, if you have a boyfr…” He mumbled the word boyfriend I’m pretty sure. I just laughed at him.
“Well my favorite color: purple, movie: If I stay, book: The Fault in Our Stars, song: Skinny Love by Birdy, sports: I used to dance and play soccer. I don’t play any sports right now though. My mom and dad divorced when I was seven. I have an older brother Liam and no, I don’t have a boyfriend” I said while blushing
“Oh that’s cool I love The Fault in Our stars” Matt says.
“How hard did you cry?” I said smirking.
“Pshhh I don’t cry.” Matt said in a “manly” voice.
“Okay whatever you say.” At that point I started to really like him. But I don’t trust very well. I don’t want to hurt him and I don’t want to get hurt either. I just can’t let anyone in right now. I mean, he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to break my heart intentionally. But, you never know.
We got to the corner of my street which had a big house right there. I lied to Matt and told him that, that was where I lived. I didn’t want him to see that I really lived in the small, gross, smelly apartment at the other end of the street.
“Well this is my house. It was nice meeting you today Matthew Espinosa.” I said smiling.
“You too Morgan Ferry. I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye,” Matt said delicately. We hugged. I can’t describe it, but he smelled really good. Then he turned in the opposite direction. I started walking towards the big house until I knew for sure he was gone. Then I sprinted to my apartment. I got in and smelled the scent of smoke and alcohol mixed together. Dave and my mom were in the living room.
